EP7: Indian Basin to Elkhart | Northern Wind River Range High Route 7 Days Backpacking
Day 7, northern Wind River Range backpacking high route: Today is the day before the storm. Tonight, a massive snow storm will hit the Winds, and bring snow above 9,000ft. This morning we make the difficult choice to head out to the Elkhart Trailhead today and bail on the second half of our route. This later proves to be a very smart move. For now, we hike back down Indian Basin, take the Indian Pass Trail past Island Lake, towards Seneca Lake and back to the Elkhart Trailhead. From here, we catch a ride back to Pinedale.

Anyone know about RAZZ Lake? I never would ever probably even have seen it if a friend had not located some mention of it somewhere. Locating it involves hiking the standard trail south of Wallowa Lake & after a few miles heading west on an uphill trail (sorry I cannot be more specific) & negotiating a series of switchbacks until somehow spotting a small sign for the lake (from a necessary map) & then heading north OFF TRAIL for about 15-20 minutes & then reaching this small but scenic glacial lake which became our base camp for a couple days. I am not sure of the elevation of Razz Lake (perhaps comparable with ICE LAKE) but after testing the water temperature decided swimming wasn’t an option. We were there in 1972 so maybe the off trail now has one & I rather doubt it but who knows. Maybe the little sign to the lake is gone but a map should locate it & the switchback trail is pretty close to the lake as I mentioned. On the same trip we also hiked up the Matterhorn which, I believe, is the highest peak in the Wallowas, higher than Eagle Cap by a few hundred feet & just shy of 10,000 feet so cautious HIKING as opposed to actual CLIMBING is perhaps still be possible. It easing 1972 anyway. The entire Wallowas, the lake, & Joseph are a retirement dream if ever a Lotto win comes my way.

I've always cooked on longer hikes and never considered seriously cold soaking or your strategy. I don't particularly like cooking or doing dishes but on the other hand it doesn't take a lot of time either and I do enjoy hot food in the evening. I basically cook as soon as I reach camp - turn on the stove and boil water while setting up my tent or occasionally a tarp. Dinner is basically done when the camp is ready and waiting time is just a couple of minutes (if that) when the food gets cold enough to eat it. I use my pot again next morning and that's somewhat time consuming as I use breakfast cereal and powder milk and it just take some time to eat it, but most of the time is spend getting the tent down and packing. Since I know the next use of the pot is for boiling water again in the evening I don't have to get it super clean. I don't really see why you'd use less water with your strategy. The amount of water I need on a hot (or cold) day is the same regardless if I drink it or if it's part of the food. I actually add more water than the instructions say to my food making most of my suppers soupier than they are supposed to be just to get more variation than just drinking plain water all the time. My strategy is to maximize the percentage of the food that need rehydration as that's water I don't need to carry until I'm going to prepare the food. I don't have a super low base weight though - certainly not ultralight - and don't claim my strategy is better or make my food + cook kit lighter than your food, but I also doubt that you save weight compared to cooking or cold soaking. What I do envy with your strategy is that you avoid the constant hunt for (the right amount of) fuel on town stops - and thanks for an interesting video!
