EP7: Indian Basin to Elkhart | Northern Wind River Range High Route 7 Days Backpacking
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 19. 08. 2023
- Day 7, northern Wind River Range backpacking high route: Today is the day before the storm. Tonight, a massive snow storm will hit the Winds, and bring snow above 9,000ft. This morning we make the difficult choice to head out to the Elkhart Trailhead today and bail on the second half of our route. This later proves to be a very smart move. For now, we hike back down Indian Basin, take the Indian Pass Trail past Island Lake, towards Seneca Lake and back to the Elkhart Trailhead. From here, we catch a ride back to Pinedale.

The Milky lakes are a bucket list for me. Dissapointed a bit you didn't get there on this trip but totaly understand safety first. Incredible series! Katie is a trooper doing all that bushwacking!
Trust me, i was disappointed too about not reaching the milky lakes. I've been pretty intrigued by them for many years now. There's always something for the next trip!
My '21 trip to the Winds around GRLs resulted in having to bail on our planned hike, adapt to circumstances, yet still get in a memorable first visit to the Wind River Range after retirement. Enjoyed all the wonderful scenery you presented in this series and it's inspiring me to head back out in the summer of '24 to give it another go. Thanks for the vicarious hike along!
Yep. Beautiful trip. A 175 mile hitch is no small accomplishment. Enjoyed.
Fantastic Trip ! The bushwacking and trail finding was such a challenge - perseverance !!
You are right about the Winds - lasting memories are guaranteed. I first hiked the Winds (Summit Loop from Elkhart) 52 years ago and still remember it like yesterday. Hit the same loop 2 years ago - while the same trail, the views were still as awesome as the first time.
The Winds is my favorite place to backpack too. My 1st trip there was in the 1980âs. I bring friends out with me. I try to do something new for me each trip. I want to see Pronghorn peak on the East side of the range.
We hiked by pronghorn peak in 2018 on a high route through the winds, while hiking the continental divide trail. It's stunning!
Like you needed a reason to go back ⊠lol. Thanks Eric
Haha right
Ahh, so you have had inclement weather in the Winds. About 70% of my trips there is either a partially soaked one, or changing my plans because of. Like you have said incredibly worth it though! I would guess having your cute blond friend Katie along had to have helped with the hitchhiking ha!
What a great trip in the Winds! Each of the 7 days was spectacular. Last summer was my 10th year to backpack in the Winds, although I've not done much off trail hiking there. It was enjoyable to follow your trip on my map. Really enjoyed this series of videos!
Thanks for getting us all up to date! You and Katie are an inspiration to watch. Glad you made it back out safely also. This past winter the WR range had alot of snow! The entire state had a banner year for moisture, which is better than being too dry and on fire. Good luck to you on your adventures! You definitely need to come back and hike the east side!
Thank you Eric for sharing all of this!
Gretchen from Dubois
Thanks Gretchen :) The east side is very high on my list for my next return visit, which is only a matter of time!
Really great series!
Thank you for watching!
Thanks Eric, another interesting hike to follow. Love your work.
Thanks for watching!
Incredible trip and fantastic video! I can't get enough of this type of scenery.
8 months from the posting of this video hope all is well. Take care.
Kind sir,
I was just in your website. Did I read right? You have a pending trip report of Greenland? Oh I canât wait.
I'm working on the videos right now. That will be my next series!
Awesome. Have you seen Viktor Posnov's expeditions in Greenland? He's pretty amazing. Keep on trucking man. You've got a ton of great miles and eclectic landscapes under your belt, top tier stuff. @@SeekingLost
@@grahamhallman243 i think i watched every Greenland video out there before heading out there, including Viktors. He has put out some great stuff. Thank you, hopefully many more miles to come!
Hey bud! We need an upload!!đđ
I know, I'm slacking! I've been working on those Greenland videos all winter, but still a ways to go. Once those are done, I'll have a 20 episode series scheduled to drip feed for a while
@@SeekingLost that sounds great!
â@@SeekingLostwe need a video!!
How are you getting reliable weather?
Garmin inreach mini. Also, chatter from other hikers, some who have only been in the backcountry for one or two nights, and hearing the same thing about the weather coming
