Wind Rivers: Mountains for Miles and Nobody but Us

  • We saw only one person in almost 30 miles of hiking and it's not hard to understand why. The wind rivers high route is mostly off trail with thousands of feet of climbing and this year it's covered in snow. I also learned a new word, suncups, and now it's a word that causes anger sweats. Suncups are caused by some dark, evil magic, where the snow melts in an uneven fashion leaving a 1 and a half foot deep "cup" with a thin ridge of snow around the rim. This means constantly slipping off the rim of the cup into the center. On day 2 this fiendish anomaly was the wellspring of many curses.

Blake's the best at articulating what we all think sometimes when the going gets really tough, but don't want to admit it out loud.

Got to say since I stumbled across your channel, I can’t stop watching. I’m humbled at how good you guys are, physically and at editing. And yet you go about it in a friendly non Egotistical Way. Keep up the good work.

Hands down my favorite channel. Pure adventuring with good friends, love it! Value is certainly not measured in subscribers in this case. Keep sharing your great adventures. I’ll continue virtually tagging along.

Just started watching, agree 100%. The quality of the content is absolutely exceptional, filming, production and the level of the adventures. Just brilliant

Totes, I've been binging these, reminds of old rando-ventures my buds used to do. This reminds me of youtube before it became CZcams, fairly genuine and not just all about getting clicks and $. Also, love how it's not edited for commercials and junk like the Animal Planet series. Just hope they never get tempted to do risky things just for the clicks, not worth it and it's already awesome without. Keep having fun dudes, don't worry too much about the filming it (that said some of your footage is great and the checkins are kind of fun).

Blake is the man, he always has something going on, which always adds to the adventure. All of your adventures are true death marches.

Always love the genuine commentary and banter. The winds are beautiful and "soul sucking" and remote and hellish all wrapped into one. I understand your mixed emotions as you prepare for day three. Great, great channel.

Fantastique! Very real and intense - exceptional. I skied Aiguille Argentiere in '87. Could see over to the terrain you crossed in an amazingly compressed time frame. Yikes - totally! I don't know if it's OK to mention ads - but you're getting relevant ones. Glad you could get there before the virus. All the best and stay safe!

Way to go guys! Can't wait to see the rest of the trip. I tried getting Gannett in a single day this July, and got to Bonney pass and felt exactly like Blake. I'd been nauseous for hours. We decided that discretion was the better part of valor and turned back, still getting a solid 40 miles in after about 17 hours. So much snow this year! As an old traditionalist, I'm often puzzled by using trail running shoes for tough snow and rock terrain. The misery of the all the snow travel on this adventure would been reduced some by boots that facilitated plunge stepping and better control for sliding on snow.

Waaaayyy too much negativity, though, which I don’t understand at all. Backpacking is arduous and challenging on the very BEST of days, right? It’s part and parcel of the entire experience. Make the best of it. Or, alternatively, don’t leave your house to venture outside, like, ever. Your call.
Glad that you’re all ok and you had an awesome adventure!

  • @Ja50nkAt

No such thing as fast and heavy. Save 5 lbs of group weight and just share a 3 person tarp shelter, no floor. Can't believe there using freestanding tents on a route like that.
