Gannet Peak // Taking the Tourist Route

  • We’ve been wanting to climb Gannet Peak Wyomings highest point for a while now. The peak possess a lot of challenges from weather, distance, and route finding to river crossings and possible climbing depending on which route you choose. In this episode we decided to attempt Gannet via Tourist Creek. The other route, Wells Creek, appears to be a more direct approach but depending on water levels can either be a breeze or require some climbing that has turned many groups back. So not wanting to risk a turn around we chose the route with more boulder hoping but less risk of getting turned around. It’s a long day no matter which route you choose with around 20 miles of trail and 20 miles of bushwhacking and boulder hoping. Physically I’m not worried but mentally I’m not sure I’m prepared for the beat down that is Gannet Peak.

    My mother is 93 with advancing dementia. She doesn't know who we are, but she knows you guys! Watching back to back to back to back videos of Mediocre Amateurs is honestly one of her favorite things to do. She laughs at your humor, is amazed at your awesome photography, and sometimes you give her "the willies." Your videos have truly been a lifesaver to us as we look for activities she'll enjoy. Thank you for keeping it clean!

      trainsirf I think because it’s what keeps you the safest when out on a climb like this. I think if you are in over your head you begin to forget the essential skills to help you get out of that situation. If you know when to call it quits you avoid or significantly lessen the chance of disaster on your trip.

    I've watched all your videos, and this is probably my favorite one because it reminds us all that it's okay to fail in a challenging goal when health and safety factors become a real concern. You guys are a huge inspiration for my own adventures, and have definitely encouraged me to push my limits beyond what I had ever imagined, but it's nice to see that even you sometimes say "nope, not this time," and decide that discretion is the better part of valor. I can't wait to see the episode where you finally do manage to crack this peak -- but in the meantime, I'm so glad you survived healthy and whole and will be able to keep on inspiring us for many years to come.

    I did the Winds in the late 70's - Elkhart trailhead to do Mt Woodrow Wilson. We did 18 miles day 1 with 50 lb packs in 6 hours. I thought that was a haul. Then I look at what you're doing and have to name my group, (posthumously), the Crappy Amateurs. I reject the idea of this being a "failed" attempt. It was a learning endeavor and you learned.
    The footage brought back some great memories, although this side of the Winds appeared to have far less horse pack damage. Horse packs obliterated trail due to hoofs on high moisture trails that turned into mud bogs sown with copious horse fecal deposits. And the four legged friends had shat in most of the lakes to the point we wouldn't drink the water. But that scenery is just stunning, and worth a trip back.

    If your goal is to summit Gannett in a single day, I think your best option is up Wells after Labor Day. You can hop over the creek. It will still be a long day, but is a better route than Tourist. I've summited this way but it took 2 nights because I'm mortal. Good luck!

    I failed to summit Gannet last year as well. We also started at Green River lakes and did a 4 day trip to the titcomb basin and down to elkhart park. Honestly, if I were to try it again, I would either go from the east on the Reservation (lots of permitting stuff required though) or if I could run like you monsters, I would start from the Elkhart Park trailhead, go to titcomb, go over dinwoody pass, up the peak and then back. The trail is basically flat from Elkhart to titcomb. Dinwoody pass is horrifyingly steep, however, you could camp out in titcomb and wait for a good summit day (we got a crazy thunderstorm the morning we were going to summit)

    I attempted this route in August 2017 and camped at around 10,400 in tourist creek. I got about 900 feet below the summit and turned around. This was by far the most strenuous hike I have ever done due to all the boulders, with the tourist creek boulder field being the worst. You made a wise decision turning around. If I returned, I would try camping a 2nd night near skinny lake, giving plenty of time for summit day. This video brought back memories of my time there. If you do wells creek, bring ropes. Thanks!

    I've attempted Gannett from Green River lakes three times, successfully summitting twice. I saw one big wrong turn in the video: Don't go down to Scott lake! Traverse and take what I call The Ramp down to the 10,795' "Long Skinny Lake". Also, Wells Creek is more direct, but I wouldn't consider it until at least Labor Day, depending on runoff.

      @TheThoughtful1 Před 4 lety +1

      Also agree. I've climbed Gannett from every approach and agree that Wells after Labor Day is the superior choice for your goal - minimal gear, single day push. Also agree you should've hiked to long skinny (also called "Many Bug Lake") after Tourist, but regardless your name has to be Anton Krupicka to achieve something like that.

    • @kenjohnson9658
      @kenjohnson9658 Před 4 lety +1

      @@TheThoughtful1 I think Many Bug Lake is the long, skinny one at the top of Wells Creek, practically an extension of Scott Lake. I haven't seen the "Many Bug Lake" name on maps, but the name is used on the SummitPost entry for the Wells Creek route (www.summitpost.org/wells-creek/536454). The "long, skinny lake" you head for after crossing over from Tourist Creek has no name on the topo map, but has an elevation of 10,795'. It's about 1/2 mile east of, and 280 vertical feet above, Scott Lake. I think I'll start calling it Lane Lake because it's in the optimal lane between Tourist Creek and Minor Glacier and also in homage to my dad who, in 2016, camped at Lane Lake and summitted Gannett just two weeks short of his 72nd birthday.

    The fact that you turned around and still posted made me a fan of the channel. If I could find the right songs I’d make a tribute video when I do the Crystal Range traverse this weekend. It’s only 5,500 ft and 15 miles so don’t get too excited, should be good views and lots of class 3, at least.

    Not easy knowing when to call it. Super smart from both of you.

    Nice effort guys. I also attempted Gannet on 7/27 with plans to do it in a day from Elkhart TH, but unfortunately no summit either. A long day with a lot of variables to negotiate!

    Great judgement to turn around. Still a great day. I climbed Gannett in 2001 with a two day approach.

    I was wondering when you would do this. Looking forward to your day hike videos up Mts. Robson & Waddington.

      Good luck running into Waddington. I enjoyed our cozy copter flight in 2018. We bailed 300 feet from the summit because of nasty rockfall.

    You guys made the right decision to turn around. Boulder hopping in the dark is just asking for trouble.

    Just massive to see you out again, and, making the correct decisions, on the terrain. But are there Gannets there? Magic production as always........
