The Eiger // On the Edge of the Murderwall

- On our first full day in Europe we decided to climb the West Flank of the Eiger. It's no Mordwand or Nordwand but it's still a challenging route with steep loose rock and black ice. It's also a great way to beat jet lag. I attempted to climb the Eiger last year after climbing Mont Blanc but got turned around by new snow. There was some new snow on the summit this year as well but we came prepared. At just over 13,000 ft the Eiger is a great intro hike in the Alps and hopefully our luck with the weather will continue as as we continue to check off mountains in the Swiss Alps.

Danny your drone work is some of the best in the business. Know that your viewers enjoy all the work that goes into hauling it along and capturing the footage. It truly elevates these videos to another level.
Agreed, the shot below the rock edge was great. I was hoping for a drone shot at the summit. If you love mountain drone shots, as far as I know I've shot more mountains with my drone than anyone on earth. I just uploaded my trip up James Peak / St. Mary's Glacier in Colorado if you are interested.
I'm on the other side of this medal. Hate drones and droneshots, was always happy he seemed to refrain from using many droneshots.
@@kasper525 can I politely ask why you don’t like the drone shots? I know for me they give me a lot of perspective sometimes that the vlog camera and gpros can’t give me. I’m just curious is all
@@jessismallz Sure! It's mainly the nuisance for man and nature at the place itself. If the original sound was used the magic would be gone. For me it feels like an easy score. I have seen vids (also from Danny) that manage to capture the same feel but from a more human perspective. I respect that more; creating within your boundaries, but I know I'm quite alone in that.
@@kasper525 I suspect you are in the minority there but to each their own
Hey, I was the guy that flagged you down at the Lauterbrunnen train station! Really cool to see you in person, especially since I had watched a few of your older Switzerland videos to get pumped for a hike my wife and I were doing the day before. I figured there were some epic videos in the works once I saw you and that was definitely the case. Thanks for the continuously great content.
So rad meeting you! Hope you and the misses had a great trip.
I always secretly hope I bump into an amateur when I'm out in the mountains!
Me too@@PhatPat6069
Crazy to climb this mountain in basket shoes .! 🤟😄🤪😁🏔️🌨️🐐
I will never get tired of hearing "Yesterday" play while there's some badass mountaineering happening on screen!
Lot of the classics in this one! Loved it
Who makes the Tune ýesterday´?😅 tried to find it on spotify. No luck
@@sozekeysersoze Otis McDonald
I'm sooooo freaking glad I kept commenting on everyone of their videos to bring it back!!!
I literally listen to Yesterday when I go hiking, lol. The tune at the start of the descent is also good!
Maybe I’m just old-and I admit majority of my mountaineering days are far behind me-but I would not have attempted that climb without roping up, and I certainly would not have continued onto those ice conditions without crampons. If the weather had deteriorated at all (and it does so on the Eiger unpredictably and often!) you could have been in very deep trouble up there with no way to retreat without ice gear. I’m glad you had a safe and successful climb, and the footage was awesome. Thanks for sharing, and please stay safe.
On many of these sections, roping up doesn't really help, though there are some anchors, e.g. steel rods (you can see one). Many Swiss guides will do short roping in these sections, but for normal teams I would also mostly go unroped. Also reduces the risk of causing rockfall. About the crampons, I think they mentioned they have them but decided not to use them. They certainly had ice axes.
Regarding the crampons, I used to be the same - put them on as late as possible, but have since become wiser ;).
Although many people have crashed and died on the climb, the name Mordwand does not officially exist. This is the Eiger Nordwand ("North Face of the Eiger")
You guys used to go for long runs in the Mountains. Blake would complain, Danny would barf, I get that, I do that. I'll never be climbing the Eiger...
Watching this video was 12.33 minutes of holding my breath and my chest about to have a heart attack..my hats off to you guys..live large
This channel is awesome. Every time I watch a new video it makes me want to plan another hike. To see you all progressing with increasingly difficult peaks and improving your videography over the years has been a treat also. All that added weight and gear to document everything is super impressive not to mention the time it takes to edit and put together the presentation. Amazing summit views from the Eiger on such a clear day, amazing. Safe travels in Europe gents!
I film a lot of hiking videos on Vancouver Island, we have amazing unique scenery but nothing like the Eiger... WOW
those drone shots of chase and aaron near the edge were quite enjoyable
No words 😮. Just simply incredible video. I was at the base of the Eiger in Grindelwald in 1970 when I was in the USAF. And I was just wondering what the views would be like from the summit. Now I know. Thanks for taking us along on this wonderful adventure. 🤘
Sweet video. Rad running into you guys in Wengen!
You wouldn't think sitting down watching a video would make your knees buckle but they did.......amazing footage! So COOL! Appreciate you taking us along for the ride
Y'all got goatblood coursing through those veins.
These videos are so enjoyable. They never fail to make me wanna get out and hike. And after a do a 2 mile loop (10ft of vert!) on the trails around my house, I get home and think to myself, "I'm just like those guys, but in my own way. Life is good."
Every time I watch one of your videos my heart rate goes up, my palms get sweating and I think holy sh!t I can't believe they look so casual. This video though really made me check my shorts. Well done guys.
That overhead drone shot at (4:53) simply stunning.
wow, without climbing protection, what heroes....Swiss rescue is very proud of you,
I love the immersion. I get a physiological response as I watch and my palms get sweaty. My heart races.
Beautifully filmed! The drone, the exposure, ancient rock in a legendary destination . . . A real treat! Thanks!
Looks like you have some nice weather. That is good. So looking forward to watching this new European trip. Beautiful cinematography as always.
I love the community we have here with Danny and his friends! All the viewers are amazing…everyone is so supportive! Probably one of my favorite channels to be apart of 💕💓
As someone who is terrified of heights , cliffs and gets vertigo very easy. I appreciate videos like this giving me a bird's eye view from the comfort and safety of my home. Absolutely beautiful mountain.❄️🏔️⛰️🗻🏞️
Another fantastic video! Nicely done. Looking forward to the rest of your Europe tour!
Love your content and the drone shots on the knife edge were spectacular!
Great Video & Music
This is among the most compelling video storytelling you have yet created, kudos mate! Masterful camera and drone work too, truly magnificent scenery! Thanks!
One of your best yet! Superb footage. I love it when you guys head to Europe because that means we get treated to a series of cool vids. Looking forward to the rest!
Love watching your guys’ vids! Ended up solo running the cloudveil traverse linked with the north ridge on the middle after watching your vid! Awesome inspiration to get out and explore!
It's always a SUPER great day when a new MA video drops! And man, that route and summit would be a trip highlight for me. You guys are on a whole other plane of existence from us mere mortals! 😄😉
Wow!!! Spectacular! And the song is back, the yesterday song, yay! It brings back happy memories of so many of your other wonderful videos. Absolutely stunning scenery, stunning drone footage. You guys are the best! Thank you for another amazing video.
Awesome climb 😮 Tremendous views all around. 😊 Great job of sharing with all of us. 👍🏻🙋🏼♀️🇺🇸
I took the train up inside the Eiger we could look out the windows where they used to dump The Rock. The face itself looks absolutely terrifying. That's a beautiful area I'm sure you'll find plenty to climb.
You guys are totally fearless, what a wonderful day out!
Holy moly what fantastic scenery, unbeliveable footage!
My wife and I REALLY REALLY REALLY enjoy your adventures. Great work guys and thank you. Those view OMG fantastic.
I have climbed 5 of the 14K peaks in CO. This video reminds me of those days, although the scenery was significantly different, and the edge route much more frightening! Incredible video, thanks for sharing!
Great camera work. Had a pit in my stomach the whole way. Close as I’ll ever get to the Eiger. Loved the Clint Eastwood movie the Eiger Sanction.
Just got back from Grindelwald and Chamonix a few days ago. That's one hell of a mountain, incredible views from both towns. I just searched for your Mont Blanc trip yesterday, awesome seeing this vid pop up today. Now I need to go back!
I was in Europe with my college football team in 2017 (we went to play a German team in Munich for an exhibition match) and we spent 9 days there, 2 of which were in Switzerland. One day we did a hike up to Murren, and the whole time i was looking across the valley at the Eiger and the Jungfrau dreaming of the day i could come back and hike those slopes. The entire valley felt like it shouldn't have existed on earth, it was so breathtakingly beautiful, and seeing your journey and the views along the way I'm even more convinced that I need to make it back, because that is the most stunning place on the planet.
That was awesome! Thanks for bringing us along.
Most underrated channel ever. My balance would never let me do anything you guys do so I’m living vicariously through your videos 🥰
This was incredible guys - I started doing mountains stateside thanks to your vids.
Incredible scenery and views! 🤩Awesome how clouds were forming as air crossed over the edge of north face 😍 All in all what a photogenic day with all the cumulus clouds around to spice up the view while also not blocking it completely, visually really lucky and amazing situation🥰 Can't wait to see what else you did, I hope weather let you do something else cause this September is bad 🌩⛈
Amazing adventure. And amazing cinematography!
All the feels from the classic MA soundtrack and incredible climb.
Man you guys were right along that edge. As much as I'd love to do this I know I'd be hugging the ground all the way up that thing lol
You guys are awesome. What a great climb and the videography was fantastic.
Love how this is a warm up for these guys!
As always, superb episode!
Awesome, best video yet. Coolest weather, route and surrounds! Great shots!
Danny thanks soo much for the extra work you did on capturing all the footage and making the experience that much more personal. I can't wait to see the next one!
Also can't wait for more gear review over at extra mediocre.
Cheers from Switzerland :)
Well done to you all. Excellent footage.
Amazing footage, awesome views, loving this channel for years ! Trademark music is great too. Tks !
Wow wow. Thank you for sharing your Journey
Awesome episode. Thanks for the motivational boost 💪.
Man...those ladders were cool. Walking along the edge....😳😳
Thanks for adding yet another peak to my to do list.
Not sure I could keep up with you two but I sure would love to try. Your “hikes” are definitely on my list. Thanks for sharing
Magnificent!!!
Thank you for posting!!
Only the Suisse have a train crossing inside a mountain. I guess that was an emergency exit. Great views, great video, guys! Thank you!
Thank you yes incredible place was there in 1997 with Swiss friend have to get back and do some hiking but not this one. Great photography and tganks for taking back to this magical scenery.
Such a great video! Really enjoyed you guys mixing in some tunes from earlier videos too. Really tickles the nostalgia bone.
Classic route
Great footage
This is some of your best work yet Danny
Cheers man
Wow! Absolutely amazing. I was scared watching.
Breath taking footage, an amazing video!
Well done! I was there 8 days ago on a bluebird day. We did 4 days of the Via Alpina and it was stunning!
Awesome! I hiked under the Eiger years ago and it was great to see what was up there. Good drone shots.
OMG, wonderfull footage and drone flying. Eiger lovely
That view is amazing! Great video.
Love that walk next to the edge! That was SWEEEET!
Every time I see that you've posted one of your videos I get excited. I've enjoyed every one of them for various reasons. This one though is my favourite. The footage is amazing, the mountain iconic and the way the three of you make a challenging hike seem so blase. Just brilliant. Love it! Keep' em coming!
Really nice videography! Very impressive climb. Well done gents!
thanks for sharing! Truly Awe inspiring
You've done a lot of great videos over the years, but this one might be one of the very best so far. Just epic footage, insane.
Way to go guys, looks like it was awesome!
Awesome work as usual guys! 👍
Danny - amazing footage. Your videos definitely inspire many others to adventure (perhaps “lesser mediocre” adventures or is it “more mediocre”?- either way - less intense). They are a huge inspiration. Excited for the next one!
That was hardcore. Respect to you guys doing that. That's nuts.
Amazing, great job. Congratulations !! 🙂
I’m afraid of heights, but I love watching. I get so dizzy just watching.
Awesome drone shots and videography as usual, Danny!
Outstanding video!
Gentlemen, my compliments. Your videos are engaging, informative and well edited. Great work on displaying that razor edge! As a fellow climber and skier, that one got me!
My hands got sweaty 🤣
I'm current with all your work, and looking forward to more!
Chee-hoo! 🤙🏼
Sick! Can't wait for the next adventure!!
Bravo boys nothing mediocre about that 👏 enjoy the rest of your European adventure
Share these vids. Need to get Danny to 100k subs before his knees give out.
Also the down climb looks terrifying.
Share mine while you're at it? 😆😅🙏
Beautiful scent class 4 .class 5. Climbing .you all got the skills.👍😁
Outstanding as always
I'm very impressed. Spent a few weeks of my life in lauterbrunnen but I only rode the tram and trains, did some short walks to exit points, and flew my canopy back to the valley.
You folks go hard! I feel lazy just watching ;-)
Pretty good pronounciation of "Guten Morgen"! "Wunderbar" also still good :D Great video as always, as much as I love seeing you climb all over the US, it's cool to see you guys in Europe, closer to things I know.
Stunning. Love how you call it a nice little day out 🤣
Excited to see the rest of the trip!
You guys are amateurs, mediocre amateurs, and I love it. Keep it up!
Beautiful day on a beautiful mountain!
The hole in the mountain you found at about 3 minutes in, is how they used to get the rock out of the mountain when digging the tunnel. They can be found along the entire length of the tunnel if you know where to look for them!
It was also a stop back in the early days of the railway - Rotstock - although the tunnel to the door looks pretty rough now...
Best channel on youtube! You guys are my inspiration!
absolutely gorgeous
What a nice day for a climb!!! Great View!!
I was there what 30 years or so ago... I miss the Eiger, the Alps, really the entire region... I would really like to encourage everyone to go there. In my opinion, it is hard to say you have lived a full life if you haven't been up there... Fröhliches Wiedersehen am Berg!
Great footage especially the drone shots.
Amazing. Nice addition of summit subtitles as well
congratulations for Eiger summut guys !!! 🎉
What a great looking route. Cracking day out.
