Gannet Peak Via Wells Creek // Summit or Die

- The day after my failed attempt to summit Gannet via Tourist Creek I texted Aaron and Chase asking if they wanted to go back with me and make another attempt. The next week I was once again in the parking lot at Green River Lakes Campground suiting up at 3am for another attempt at this daunting mountain. This time we were going to try and summit via the Wells Creek route which requires some rock climbing when the water is high. With some rope, harnesses, and a small rack of gear we headed off down the trail with a heavy load on our backs. I don’t actually believe in the motto summit or die. Summits for the most part are just points on a map. Whether you summit them or not matters almost not at all in the grand scheme of things. However, I did go out this time with a more iron clad determination to summit, conditions permitting of course. The phrase gives you a general idea of my mental state as I left the van the morning of this attempt and I also thought it’s dramatic tone might get me an extra view or two. I’m not above shameless click baiting.
45 miles of brutal running and climbing. my 5 mile hikes in the woods feel a little lame now.
At least you're getting out, I think that it most important part.
Just build miles slowly i started hiking seriously a year ago and i went from 10 mile days to 25 mile days
Hike your own hike... But yeah this makes my 12 mile days seem pretty tame.
The difference between five miles and forty-five miles is that you find a way to keep going, but whatever you get is good enough as long as you’re still tired the next day.
@Giada_De_Low_Rent_Tits Its all a progression.. I remember starting off I was happy to get in a couple miles, 1000ft of gain at 10,000ft elevation.
Last weekend I had a 16+ miles, 6,000 vert to just under 14,000. Just a matter of setting goals and pushing. Keep on a climbing :)
Dude congrats on *finally* making it! Been following along with a lot of your videos...top production quality for these epic outdoor mountain adventures 👍. I like how you guys put on crampons and then immediately it cuts to scenes of you guys climbing up dry rocks near the summit 🤣! Anyway, big fan here. If you are ever out in CO (again) and want to collab on something (granted I'm not a very good technical climber or skier...but I can run!) let me know!
Would love to see a collab and I love when my CZcams world's collide!
sage can def. run!
Yeah, Jeremy Renner just totally took an afternoon and casually strolled up there (while carrying an unconscious guy). Very realistic writing.
Seriously don’t know how you don’t have more subscribers... some of the best content on YT
Ya it's great stuff, just not enough people can relate I suppose. Glad I don't have to go through a climb like this every time I make a video!
Need more likes!!!!!!
I have to agree With you
I agree also.
Joining the party late, but they have 1 more now and I love their videos. Up to 87K now, what was it at 2 years ago?! Still think they should have Way more!
I just did Gannett last weekend via Titcomb basin. Dislocated my shoulder on the way off the summit and had to travel 24 miles back to my truck with it out of place. Pretty rough experience to say the least.
Yikes.
How did you dislocate it?
1993ianb had wet shoes coming off a glacier and was down climbing a rock section when my feet slipped. I grabbed the first thing I could and yanked my shoulder right out.
@@caydensmith6802 How was the bergshrund when you did it? was there still a snow bridge?
Laura Ippolito there was still an ice bridge but it was definitely deteriorating quick. I can imagine at this point it would be pretty small.
Again, how does this channel not have 1 million subs. Danny is the man
I've never seen Danny actually tired before like the end of the video. Maybe they are humans after all?
LOL -- search "mediocre amateur vomit" and you'll find some more evidence of Danny resembling a human! I guess sometimes that comes at the end, but sometimes in the middle with a rally...
I know, right? I'm always amazed at how high their endurance levels are and to see Danny tired is just mind blowing lol. Didn't think it was possible!
Watch your videos all the time, funny seeing you in the comments of another channel I watch.
Glizzy Goblas Yeah! Just discovered VS’s channel. I’ll have to watch more of his videos
Did you watch the one where they go running in the grand canyon with no water? Looked like Danny might not of made it if a random didn't give him water that day. Awesome video here again guys thanks.
Ahh Well’s Creek: Your video of the climbing section reminded me of an uncomfortable night sleeping in those boulders below it while contemplating our options. ... we turned around.
Love how chill Chase is.
Great video! I am amazed that you not only hiked over 45 miles and 7,400 vertical feet, but also had time to take these video shots that depict very accurately what the experience is like.
After finding your channel and binge watching everything in a week, the wait for a new video broke my balls!! Love the vids guys
Testemax helps!
Well done. One could spend a lifetime in the Winds and never run out of adventure.
Just awesome content. Should have way more subscribers! Cheers to all of you 2 years out.
Chase we like you show up more often that way you can spice up their routes a bit more!
That was some grinder you three completed. Enjoyed the technical part tremendously, glad to see Chase again.
Congrats. The second hardest state high point in the country by most accounts. The millage is no joke.
Wait, which one is first?
@@brandonsalerno6456 Denali
@@Melanie-Shea ...and the rest of the mountains in Alaska.
And done in under 24 hours!! Legendary!!
Packing all that in one box in a single day is a gift. That's why it's called the present! Awesome job!
Well done guys. When I woke up, checked my phone and saw the notification, I couldn't have been more stoked. Glad you got it done. Nice to see Aaron and Chase as well. It's been a while.
Friggun WOW!!! Is there anyone out there even close to MA? The shots, composition and narration, story-telling? Thank you! Lots to say, but the worlds chiming in, so that's it for me. for now. :)
The Helmet-Topic is a big topic here in the german alps. As example at "Watzmann" Mountain. When I do mountainrunning there, I have to pack it because there are hundreds of people in one day. At the descent they have tired feet and right next to you, you have falling rocks. Its crazy because this mountain is remote and beautiful but popular like a rockstar. Greetings from Germany ;)
You guys always remind me to push my friends into going into this type of adventures, greetings from Mexico!
congrats on your victory!! glad you went back, i am excited to see Alaska!
WOW. Through the few trip reports I've been able to find on Wells Creek online, I've gotten the feeling it's a really fun route. This video only cements my suspicion this is an ultra classic! Can't wait to give this a shot next summer (although more likely as a fastpack)! Thanks for sharing!
Danny, you have such a gift with filming and cinematography. I film my hikes and then I watch you and I’m amazed by the effort and dedication you put into these. You inspire me man.
Such an elite group of guys. Nice work. I am really impressed.
Great to see you guys climb this and great to see the return to Aaron!
great trip report. The wind rivers is by far the best hiking in the continental USA. Most remote and challenging area. Love that hike
Great job, Danny, Chase, & Aaron!! Your determination is inspiring
My favorite part is how awesome you guys are.
If you look shattered like that, it must have been really tough because usually all your adventures look like a walk in the park for you.
This is not ,nor their other adventures, are walks in the park , normally 2 + days, weather window
Sick bro! Your drive is awesome! Just climbed mt Baker, Washington for the first time!
Mount Olympus may be of interest to you as it's similar to Gannet in some way: ~45 mile round trip, 8k ft gain, some glacier, a bit of rock climbing to get to the top but you start at sea level so max elevation is only 8k. And also can be done in a long day. The approach through the Hoh Rainforest is really pretty too
That’s what I call an epic dudes. Well done.
The camerawork was impressive this video. Well done on finally getting Gannett!
seriously badass hike that takes serious skills and tenacity! big ups for the amazing accomplishment!
Danny and Chase both rockin' the BD Distance pack *and* poles ... love both!
By ascending Slide Cr. and approaching Mammoth / Minor Glaciers from the north, the trip is alot more pleasant, but requires a couple of nights. Congrats for doing Gannett in a day!
Uuhhh...I don't think the things that you guys are doing and the degree to which you are doing them classifies you as amateurs. If it does...there is no hope for the rest of us! These are EPIC!
that intro and outro beat is synonymous with your videos now. Love it
You guys are machines. Well done! Great story telling and cinematography. This channel should be blowing up.
You guys are mental. I can't imagine hiking 45 km a day on a normal trail, let alone 45 *miles* in varied terrain.
I love you. Thanks for bringing us along.
That was a hoot of a run/hike including a some rope action for good measure - plus the fact that you nabbed some live action in terms of the critical sections and summit. I took in Gannett solo August 15, 2019 via Glacier Trail 801 + snow-bridge + gooseneck pinnacle + ridge line, then camped out at the NOLS high camp. Best part -- nobody else was up there, either from Bonnie Pass or the Lakes. It is a seriously swell hike and you can clearly see the Winds and Gannett from the Wyoming Range 100 course that starts 25 miles west of Marbleton and ends in Hoback. Now I need to check if y'all went up Granite in Montana - another kick of a climb, in particular if you head up via Sky Top Lakes and the SW Ramp. Cheers.
Sorry, but you guys are NOT mediocre. That was amazing.
You guys are in crazy good shape to pull this off!! Inspirational!!
Loved the video. You’re stepping up your game and we love it!
Long hair Danny is a thing of the past for now... doesn’t matter the videos are always great 👍🏻
That was unbelievable. You guys have my total respect.
That was brutal. Great job.
GREAT VIDEO!! Thank you! Please add Closed Captioning please🙏 I'm missing half the story. Love the film, the views! Your efforts are most appreciated 💜 CO
Wow 45 miles roundtrip , very impressive!!!
Well done and congrats on another summit!
I'm a simple man, I see a new Mediocre Amateur video..I watch and click like.
Thanks for your channel. I miss doing stuff like that so much.
Super sick adventure!!! I loved the climbing part, and Chase was a cool add on to the show! Maybe you guys could do a Mediocre Climbing episode? Just an idea.
I've been binge watching Medicare's videos all week. Now i have this burning desire to purchase an ice axe.
I love Aaron's optimism!
Awesome! Im heading to CO tomorrow from PA. Gonna try to bag Longs, Elbert, and Capitol. Can’t wait! Love your channel, keep em coming!
Good luck man.. Its TERRIBLE here right now with smoke from all the Fires.. I can normally see longs clearly from my house and havnt been able to see it in a week.
I have been searching for content like this for so long and I’m so stoked to find it
In my mind there is nothing mediocre about you guys. Your fitness level is amazing. I sometimes think you edit the video down from 7-10 days of work to make it look like you do all that in one day. That’s the only way I can imagine being able to do it. I am 70 years old so that may have something to do with that view. Thank you for letting me live vicariously through you.
I was waiting for this since I saw your strava! This is awesome, though maybe you could try backpacking sometime?
This is the absolute illest MA video yet. In absolute awe of your ability to crush this in a day. Again, if folks haven't been to the Winds they have no idea how hard this is.
Just curious... is backpacking EVER an option for you?? Amazing none the less, awesome hike guys! Well Done
They did some fast packing episodes previously.
Check out the Wind River 3 (?) night speed backpack they did.
They did. Not as impressive as this, but I think they’re pretty new to it, their packs were all over 20lbs for 4 days, and they were going about 20 miles per day. Maybe it was meant to be more casual?
Josh Triplett They’re to fast to spend a night lol
@@JimBridgerHarney Slightly off topic, but how TF do you get your pack weight down for shorter trips? I feel like I need most of the same stuff regardless of how many days I'm going, how much food I pack is the only difference.
If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Another great adventure video!
A. Loving the dramatic video thumbnail
B. Your bearded friend looks a lot like the legendary Rob Krar.
C. Excellent video
Fantastic video! Beautiful footage, great editing. Superb. Thank you.
Excellent video. Great job! I've gone through both Tourist Creek & Wells Creek. Went up Wells when water was low and didn't need climbing gear. I still prefer Tourist Creek. Wells was scary.
@ David Johnson: Trying to make a decision between those two routes for next year for myself and the GF. Curious why you say Wells is scary if the sketchy climb didn't have to be done? Thank you.
@@JaySilver72 Fair question. Let me start by saying that I've climbed the Tourist Creek route up and back twice on two failed summit attempts. On the successful summit, we went up Wells Creek, but came down Tourist Creek because we felt it was the safer option. I just wanted to give you a better idea of my level of familiarity. Wells Creek is simply a more dangerous route. You're rock hopping up a very steep incline on giant boulders. Any slip or fall had a much higher potential for injury. One thing that concerned me the most was that there was a very, very slippery moss on the rocks that extended an inch or two above the water line of the creek and it wasn't very visible. In a few places you are compelled to jump across the creek. It was scary! There were several times I felt like I was taking a bigger risk than was prudent. I should add though that we were carrying full backpacks and not just daypacks. I honestly wouldn't recommend Wells Creek over Tourist Creek to anyone for any reason. Yeah, it's a more direct route and you don't have to lose some elevation like you do when you cross over from the Tourist Creek drainage. But in my opinion the added risk in Wells Creek isn't worth it.
They're crazy. I would have backpacked in. Then woke up and sent it. Then back to camp for chill. Then stay another night or two because the Winds are majestic af. Then packed out. Lovin life. Everytime I do when I'm there!
Wow!!! I am glad I found you guys in CZcams.. love your videos! And this hike is amazing! Thanks for sharing!
You guys are awesome! Always positive. The key to success!
AWESOME!!! WAY TO GO! It takes a lot of character to get beaten and then turn around less that a week later and beat it. Fantastic work!
I'm so excited I found this channel :)
Fantastic adventure💪💪💪
Best you tubers hands down
I seriously love this channel. I’ve binge watched though all your other videos, but you’re not putting out enough videos to satisfy my addiction! Keep the awesome content coming!
This was amazing! I tried to climb it last week, we only had 4 hours to make a summit attempt and we had to stop because it rained the whole time.
Magnifico vídeo Danny,y tus dos nuevos compañeros son muy buenos fichajes.Enhorabuena, queremos mas....👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Wow I just happened to google while watching- there was death, a stranded fellow climber, and a rescuers severely fractured leg from a fallen rock like yesterday very scary climb
You guys are so fit, WOW! This stuff inspires me to keep working out and training for my little hikes.
Nice! I tried tourist creek two years ago but ran out of time between the glacier and summit. Hoping to go back in the next couple weeks. Since you said only a 30 minute difference I’ll stick to what I know! Great video
Your trips and videos are epic! They truly inspire a whole new level of epic adventures! Keep them coming! & stay safe!
Another great edit and adventure. They just keep getting better. Nice job guys!
Job well done! Thanks for sharing this adventure. I’ve always wondered what it would take to summit this. You guys are studs!
I love your vids. I wish i was 20 years younger
I summited gannett on 8/20 we were probably on the trail at the same time; nice work man!
breath taking scenery gentlemen! Love your videos !
Always love your videos! I'm off to Wind River Range for 3 nights in the backcountry next week can't wait!
It's always a great day when there is a new Mediocre Amateurs! Glad that you summited Danny! It looks amazing, and I hope to one day make it there. Keep up the great work!
How do you guys do those cool maps in the beginning to show where you are going?
It's an animated Line Path that could be made using a program like Adobe After Effects. Just take a screenshot of a regular map (google) and then draw a line over the trail using the pen tool. You can then animate the "path", using the line, starting from beginning to end. 👊❤️
Gannet is a beast, I've heard some people say it is tougher than Rainier and might be the hardest state high point other than Denali. Almost hard to believe that it's southern neighbor Elbert, which is the highest point in the rockies, is a class 1 walkup haha.
Congratulations on climbing Gannet peak! Look forward to your next video!
As always great content, topped off with a 12 mile gentle stroll to the truck...haha “Embrace The Suck”
I absolutely love all your adventures!! Keep it up !!😎👍🏼👊🏼
I love these videos! These guys do ultra marathons for fun for sure. Crazy athletes.
Grueling, spectacular summitting. I enjoyed it too
Best adventure channel on CZcams. Love it. Been a subscriber from the beginning.
Awesome day, and really nicely filmed. Thank you for this one!
This is your best video.
Congrats on the summit and picking a great route! We will be out there attempting a summit bid via Titcomb in 3 weeks. Nice work, cheers!
Come to Minnesota! We dont have mountains but we do have the north shore and the SHT!
I definitely want to see more technical climbing routes!! This was awesome and you guys will love that stuff.
Gnarlier than the usual. Loved it! Keep up the good work.
