- Day 22 thru hiking the Oregon Desert Trail. I awake to the sound of cows just a few yards away. Moo. Today I have 18+ mile to reach Frenchglen, my next trail town and resupply stop along the ODT. The sagebrush plains eventually give way to rolling hills and canyons, filled with green grasses and wildflowers. The snow-capped Steens Mountains loom on the horizon now as I crest the top of Jackass Mountain and drop down into Blitzen Valley. The small town of Frenchglen is below, and it's time to have a zero day in town!

New trail name: Summer Sausage! 🤣
Nice footage of the Gopher snake. I had one as a pet when I was a kid. They make pretty good pets.
I remember catching a gardener snake when I was a kid, and feeding it worms. Then it puked. 5 year old me tried, haha
After the last 20 years in cattle country, I definitely agree with you about the gates.
I've seen so many clever ways to open and close Gates, but for some reason, Oregon hasn't heard of any of them!
I simply love the wide open vistas!! Just incredible! Loving every minute of it!
I’m really enjoying the series! Thank you and great content!
I’ve stayed in the rooms at the back at the Frenchglen Hotel. Lovely people! Took me in off-season when they were closed. Gorgeous countryside and interesting history.👍👍👍
That's very cool they let you start when it was closed! They were super nice it was a great stay. Quaint little town
That is a super long day whew!
Great views on this episode. If the town of Frenchglen had a population of 12 you must have met all of them, unless they were reclusive. Thanks for your hard work and thanks for sharing.
12 seems realy low for the population, I've seen other figures that have it higher, they are probably more accurate. Either way, it's a very small community, but a nice little town
I have regretfully fixed a gate and used barbed instead of smooth for the top.loop. sometimes it's the only thing around for an emergency repair unfortunately.
I can understand that. It just seemed like the norm here in oregon.
I did a lot of desert hiking and the same thing happened to my zipper. I used to carry a tiny vice grip which solved the problem of a zipper not closing. Just clamp down slightly on each side of the pull. You can also buy replacement zipper pulls you can put on without tools called a Fix n Zip.
Of all the videos in this series I think this is one of the better ones. Its not scenery. Its not glamour. Its pure frustration. Pure suck. Day of sand and sage brush. Seen hundreds if not thousands of trail videos of about every trail. And vast majority are the highlights. Great view, Scenery. Or just white wash the suck. Folks need to realize there are days like this. Just gotta get through them.
Travis, i really appreciate your comment. I've always tried to find that balance of showing the highlights, of course, but also showing reality. It can be hard to show the suck, without appearing to complain too much. If only the average viewer knew just how much we bitch about things on trail!
And we can understand how the pioneers on the Oregon trail might have felt!
@@terrycarkner1698 so very true. I love seeing the good and bad of hikes and trails. Its the life we live.
All our gates on our ranch in eastern Oregon gates like that! Snakes are venomous, not poisonous.
I'm really enjoying the videos. Is there any chance you'll be releasing your modified route for future hikers on the odt?
I didn't do too many alts really, but if it can be helpful to future hikers, I'd be glad to share it. I've been meaning to update my blog with ODT journals and pics, just been focusing on video projects instead as of late. If you shoot me an email, i can share my ODT route with you when i get back from hiking the Mogollon Rim Trail in a few weeks. Thanks for watching!
Whining about a fence really. Stay in town with all the other City Boys if there that big of a problem for you.
I'm going to engineer the shittiest product possible, and then sell it to you. Because I know you're too much of a big man to complain about it. Lol.
Seriously with the gates, there doesn't need to be that much tension, nor does it need to be barbed. I struggled with one in Nevada to a point where I regretfully left it open. All you can do is all you can do sometimes.
I'm glad I'm not the only one. I've left one or two open before too and felt bad about it. Unfortunate effects of poor gatesmanship
