  • Day 37 thru hiking the Oregon Desert Trail. After a late start leaving Anderson Crossing, I knock out 30 miles of road walk through Sage Kansas on my way to a place called Five Bar. Most of the day was just a slog through the most remote, desolate and empty lands you could ever imagine. I saw my first and only rattlesnake of the ODT today along one of these lonely old jeep trails. But for all of the boring miles today, the last few were worth it. The view as I hiked down to West Little Owyhee again near Five Bar was downright stunning. The kind that makes you stop and stare in disbelief. Is this place really real? The mile was the hardest. A narrow canyon, with a wade through a deep pool of water. I found myself in the deepest, narrowest part of the canyon as sun went down. A cave just above me, the water's edge only yards away, and owls hooting throughout the night. Camping in the Owyhee Canyonlands tonight just embodies the spirit of adventure.

It really is stunning. I remember hearing about the Owyhees back in 2017 or so. They had been a place on my list ever since. Hiking this area now after all those years, yeah it was a cool experience!

Great episode! I’m really enjoying seeing the terrain and your journey. Never been to Oregon and didn’t realize it was so big and isolated.

I did the canyon to the Junction. It was some of the toughest hiking I've ever done. It was gorgeous. Some swimming. I was tired of canyon walking and took dirt roads south of the Junction to the north fork.

That's a lot of miles in a day! I think my most was like 18 or so and man, pretty sore feet by the end.
