ODT Day 32: Oregon Canyon Mountains (Oregon Desert Trail Thru Hike 2022 Vlog)

- Day 32 thru hiking the Oregon Desert Trail. After a wicked rainstorm last night, it's time to head up to 7900ft. It's raining hard now and the wind is blowing. I'm soaked to the bone and freezing cold. No choice but to push on. Thunder and lightning begin as I hike an exposed ridgeline above Cottonwood Creek. Finally, the rain subsides as I make it down to the shelter of the canyon below. The scenery is excellent here in the heart of the Oregon Canyon Mountains. I hike over a pass north of Flattop Mountain and drop down to Mitchell Ranch and enter a massive, but somehow unnamed (on the map) valley. Now it's a 12 mile hike into McDermitt, and I have some nasty looking storm clouds nipping at my heels the whole way. It's a foggy, eerie walk into McDermitt, and I'm just in time to catch the massive swarm of Mormon Crickets that have taken over this small town.

Make sure to watch the end and see the MORMON CRICKET INVASION!!
Nasty!!!! Speaking of nasty... can I buy you a new cap? 😁
@@daviddejong2756 nooooo! That hat is legendary!
@@daviddejong2756 it was new at the beginning of this hike! The ODT is a dirty trail, haha
This sure is terrifying. Good thing it’s regularly occurring so people know what to expect.
Really cool time lapse on your way to McDermitt.
We're really enjoying this series and look forward to seeing your remaining segments.
Thanks for watching :)
I pioneered that route into McDermitt in 2016. The first ODT route into McDermitt had more elevation gain and cross country and came out on the highway farther west. Glad to see the ODT decided to use my McDermitt alternate.
You embrace the suck way better than most do.
Oh, i have my moments too!
Its surprising how often videos in very dry areas have rain in them.
Stupid rain and Holy Moses those Crickets!!! 😮😂
And now a year later, I'm in central/northern Nevada where the mormon crickets are swarming, too!
@@SeekingLost sounds like they're up in East Central Wyoming also. Quite a range they cover! Haven't run into it myself yet
Great camera --and commentary-- during this rainy hiking day. Even knowing the crickets were there (having viewed your narrative posts along the way) I was still startled to see them again. Did you try the Cricket Sub?
Haha, no cricket sub for me! One of the benefits of being a small channel, i can poke fun at places like subway here and not worry too much about being sued... Bet Dixie can't get away with that 😁
@@SeekingLost Best face forward, but yeah. I hadn't heard of her but found the channel after you mentioned this. Her Iceland journey looks cool. Very high Q vids and enough subscribers to run for governor maybe. Thank you and keep the joy in journey!
5:10 the vistas here are incredible!! Wow!
Also, how does your rain jacket and pants hold up through all that rough bushwhacking you do? Surprised it doesn't tear!
I brought wind pants (1oz) on this hike in place of rain pants. Didn't expect to use them much. They did tear! I try to only wear my rain jacket when it's raining, not as an extra layer, to avoid ripping it. Haven't ripped it yet, but it seems to find other ways to leak, haha
Those crickets are seriously icky. They look like cockroaches! I don't think I could sleep in that town!
It's a good thing you can't smell them too through this video. And if you think the crickets are bad, they somehow pale in comparison to the shitty hotel owner at the Rodeway Inn... Shady as hell and a cockroach of a human!
@@SeekingLost lol even beat ole Searchlight eh?
