  • Day 16 thru hiking the Oregon Desert Trail. In town we meet Heavy Teva, who joins Donny and I for the next section. 3 hikers strong, you're looking at the ODT thru hiker "bubble" for 2022. We climb the Warner Mountains and encounter our first significant snow along the ODT, as we continue hiking the Fremont National Recreation Trail through the Fremont National Forest. We camp at Vee Lake for the evening, which happens to be Memorial Day weekend.

Our desert vs the rest of the world is really different. Great scenery. This is where I start liking it. Much better than sage brush

Incredible hiking through those snow fields!! Just incredible!
I could never work a routine job either. As a kid, and high schooler, I dreaded the day of "being an adult". Everyone I knew wanted to work in an office, or big corporation. I could never have done that! I was able to work outside, and every day was a new day. You could also take satisfaction in a days work, looking back on what you accomplished. I'd be interested in a video explaining how you pulled this off. You are definitely living the dream! I'm so impressed with what you do! You have my dream job!

What kind of job did you do outside? I did a lot of physical jobs in the past and can confirm the "hard day's work" kind of satisfaction you get at the end. It's even better when it's your own project. And it's the same feeling at the end of a long day hiking.
Same here, I never had any direction as a high schooler. Had no clue what I wanted to do, but I had zero interest in college. I thought it was crazy that the "normal" thing to do is pick a random job you THINK you'd like (as KID, mind you), then take on huge amounts of debt to go to college, and then be stuck in a career you may or may not like.
It was probably a good thing I didn't find hiking until my late 20s, because I spent most of that time working. Wouldn't be able to do what I'm doing today it it weren't for the time I spent then. And if it weren't for hiking I'd be toiling away somewhere trying to make more money for things I don't need!

@@SeekingLost I worked for many years as part of different golf course grounds crew. The serenity of working early in the morning, and taking care of tens of acres of manicured grass and landscapes, was so rewarding. We got done by 9am, than most people did all week! Weather was always a major influence on our day to day responsibilities. Seasons were also a big influence. You could be wearing a full rain suit and shivering one day, and sweating like crazy the next. You could always look back, at quitting time, and see what you accomplished.

I love the great basin, too. Central Nevada is my favorite. I was recently surprised to see that there was no "great basin hiking" Facebook group, so i just created the group of the same name to discuss and share great basin adventures. I know I'll be spending a lot of time exploring here in the future.

There was a supermarket at McDermitt. Need to definitely reserve a room at the one motel. It was always full. Looks like the blowdown from 2016 wasn't cleaned up.

Lol... "camera is off, you won't slip now" Now that's quotable!

But of course, the opposite is actually true... nobody slips with the camera on, it's always when it's off!

Speaking of a work routine, if you dont mind me asking, what line of work are you in, where you can consistently take off to thru-hike?

The short story is, I have a couple rental properties, and live minimally in my camper van when not hiking. I'm certainly not getting anywhere financially, just barely making it work, but it's a fair trade off for the freedom.
