  • Day 34 thru hiking the Oregon Desert Trail. We hike out of the worst Mormon Cricket swarm I've ever seen in McDermitt, and find ourselves standing at the gates of giants. It's time to enter the infamous Owyhee Canyonlands. A massive 2 million acres, it's a fabled landscape of vast, untouched canyons that look like something out of Lord of the Rings. The hike up to the rim is briefly outstanding, and then it's into a vast sea of Sage Kansas. I coined this term along the way, describing a vast, flat landscape like Kansas, but with sagebrush instead of grass. There's more swarms of Mormon Crickets, as well as grasshoppers here in the Upper West Little Owyhee Wilderness Study Area. The evening is an excellent hike in the upper reaches of Louse Canyon and the West Little Owyhee River. It's a landscape with a primal and ancient feeling to it. A creek trickles out of snow patches clinging to the canyon walls, in this lush, very lively environment. Welcome to the Owyhees.

Just returned from two weeks on the ODT from Bend to Frenchglen... thanks to you. Didn't know this trail existed until these videos started popping up on my CZcams feed. Anyway, I would have given anything for those winds of yours. The mosquitoes were downright horrendous. They started on the climb up to Diablo peak and continued to the end. If you love silence and solitude, this is the trail for you.

Bummer about those mosquitoes, hopefully you missed the Mormon cricket swarms at least! They are bad in northern NV right now. Glad to see these videos inspired you to get out there and hike some of it yourself! Very cool to hear

Rafted the Owyhee in 2018. This should be good.

That must have been an awesome trip! Looking down on it from above, can't help but wonder what it's like from the bottom

Curious as to why Donny swapped out his Lite AF pack for the Waymark?

The side seam blew out on the Lite AF, had my son send me my old Thru 40.
