  • Day 28 thru hiking the Oregon Desert Trail. After a windy and sleepless night, we awake to an excellent view from our campsite in the Pueblo Mountains. Now it's time for an extended bushwhack below the crest. The mountainside is steep and the vegetation is thick. Minor patches of snow are encountered, and water sources are plentiful (for the ODT). I find some interesting deposits of Desert Rose, or gypsum/selenite along the way. I also take a (better) high route alternate route about Denio Basin. We find a trashed out old cabin and some old mining relics and bushwhack our way down an unnamed canyon. It's a it of an adventure all the way into Denio. We just barely make it to the post office to pick up our packages, minutes before close. Time for a zero day in Denio!

That snake is a western yellow-bellied racer, aka "Mormon racer". We have them in the SF Bay Area as well as throughout the west. Unnervingly fast, but harmless as you said.

I can completely relate to lack of sleep! That tent flapping would keep me awake too! Those were definitely some steep traverses 😮!

The ODT was officially re-routed after I hiked this section. Looks like a much better alternative. The old route had a lot more bushwhacking. Also, the old big rock cairns in the Pueblos you walked by were put up by the Oregon Desert Association in the 70's.

Thinking the ODT is like the CDT in that its a choose your own adventure type trail rather than like PCT where its an actual trail

Even the CDT doesn't compare to the ODT in terms of bushwhacking and off trail hiking, mile for mile. I was surprised how little of that there was on the CDT. They are building and blazing more trail miles every year on the CDT, eventually it'll be like the PCT
