- Day 30 thru hiking the Oregon Desert Trail. After a zero day in Denio, we set out on a 72 mile hike to McDermitt through the Trout Creek Mountains. A heat wave is here and it's in the mid 90s today. The route climbs up Windy Pass and into the Red Mountains Wilderness Study Area. The hiking is pleasant here, passing through a grassland as it funnels into a canyon. This canyon is a nice hike, and it leads to the day's main water source at No Name Spring. After filling up with water, I can't find a suitable campsite, and climb up another 1200ft to find camp at Government Corral, just on the edge of the Mahogany Ridge Wilderness Study Area. It's dark now and I set up my tent by headlamp.

Day 29 was a zero day (day off in town), that's why the days jump from 28 to 30 in the series... for those who have still not caught on!
Continue enjoying deserts, the terrain and feel of the place. and those wondrous secluded meadows you showed on today's progress. It will turn out that we find things we like or don't like as much everywhere. Precisely why everyone has their own hike. Where our paths cross: OK! Thanks again for sharing so much of the ODT journey.
Spectacular beauty and scenery, here in The Reds!!!!
Pushing on to find a decent camp site only to be hiking in the dark and settling for something in the road… ah good times:)!
Seems like a fairly common situation i find myself in out here! Had a few nights like this on the Mogollon Rim Trail this year... it was so impossibly rocky in a few areas, and literally ended up camping in the only rock-free area i could find... middle of the road. Good times indeed
Man, we didn't see any establishments open when we were in Denio. Took us 3 hours to hitch out of there too. Saw a total of 7 or 8 vehicles that whole time. It makes that rural road sign kind of funny. They're all rural in E Oregon, LOL. Enjoying this whole series. Makes me want to hike more of the ODT.
Wow, such a different experience. When did you hike it? The store had just changed owners so maybe you caught them inbetween. But 7 or 8 vehicles, that's crazy low for such a main route through the region!
Gators were essential on the ODT. So much grass stick seed. I saw 3 rattlesnakes in this section.
Just subscribed. Here I am in my living room while you’re trekking in the wilderness. Looks amazing. You left this one off with a cliff hanger. Where did you end up for the night?
Thanks for the sub! I made it to a spot marked on the map as Government Corral, and had a decent spot along the road. But it was dark. Nice relaxing morning the next day here, though!
I hate those cheat grass seads!
They are surprisingly annoying! A literal torn in the side, of the foot
