Oregon Overlanding - Southeast of Steens. Better than the Steens

- On this overland trip we travelled to Southeast Oregon and explored the wilderness areas Southeast of Steens mountains and Alvord desert. The Steens are awesome but we think this area is better than the Steens.
Grew up right down the hill from where you guys were in McDermitt. Those roads in the Trout Creek area south of Whitehorse and north of the caldera are truly sketchy. But great to see my old “hood” in your video. Been there many times.
Kudos to the creators for capturing the wild, untamed beauty of offroading.
Wonderful trip and area... thank you for sharing your trips... really appreciate it and makes me want to take my family out there.

Completely stunning
My wife and I love exploring that area. Seems like there are endless roads to explore. It’s about as remote as anywhere we have been. Once a local rancher told us to be carful up there, he said “ if you break up there, you’ll die up there”. We have guided small groups of jeeps through the area and everyone always comments on how they had no idea this area existed.
Did you stop in at Fields Station for a milkshake and a burger? If we get with 100 miles of that place we make a stop.
Hi Venture Off Road! Agree, it is incredibly remote...probably the most remote I've felt in Oregon. Definitely need to bring gear and supplies to survive if you were to break down or run into an emergency. I Bought a Garmin InReach mini this past year for added comfort and safety. I feel like we barely scratched the surface in that area and will definitely return next summer.
Yep, we stopped at Fields Station and had shakes and cheeseburgers. It's a must stop!
Very cool trip. Long time since I have been that far SE in Oregon. I get to Central Oregon and have so much fun I don't push on. But I definitely need to put the Steens (or maybe SE of the Steens) on the list for 2023). We have a lot on the list but the Steens would be a worthy addition. Cheers!

Agree 100%! It’s a bit farther out of the way but totally worth it.
The video never fully conveys just how "sketchy" those trails are. It's good that you guys are slow and careful because being in a hurry always spells trouble. I'm in Medford and my brother just moved to Nampa so I'm gonna start getting familiar with the different ways to get there via dirt tracks. I love a good sunrise and some coffee.

Been all over that country. For at least 55 years. East side of the steens, Mickey hot springs, sheepshead’s. Wish I could explore the area you were in . Looks amazing!

Been planning a trip into this area for awhile now. In fact you were driving the same road (in some places) as I was planning to route. Funny you seem to wind up in places that I have been wanting to go. Oasis was another location I have been meaning to go. Thanks for scouting out those areas for me. Explorers or transplants from the wet side like to call Steens Mountain, a single continuous fault block 50 miles long towering a mile above the Alvord Desert (not a mountain range) "the steens" . Big, impressive, but wet-siders might be annoyed if desert folk call Mt Rainier of the Cascade range (also impressive) "the Rainiers".
I can attest to Narrow roads and huge cliffs out there. Last summer my wife and I took a trip out there and one of the roads was so narrow and had about a 200 foot cliff on one side and it was steep with P gravel on there that was loose as hell I did 4 low and just crawled down and it took us about 2 1/2 hours to make it to the bottom and when we did we both had a couple of drinks to celebrate lol
Yep, I know exactly what you mean! Those small pebbles were deceivingly loose. The part in the video where the right rear tire came off the trail didn’t seem that bad but the Jeep just kept sliding and I traveled at an angle for about twenty minutes before it finally came back on the trail. We definitely needed a drink after that!

Thanks NWADVENTURE1! I ran into issues with my gimble a few times. I run the calibration check before each flight and that works most of the time.
@Overland Scout i think im sending mine out for repair and buying another one....pretty soon im going to have a boneyard of drones that are probably all "user error " lol

Thanks Will! Incredibly amazing area and not much traffic. We’ve explored that area twice now and feel like we barely scratched the surface. The little thing on the left side of the hood is my GMRS antenna. The stubby is 3mm and I also have a 6mm longer ‘whip’ style for longer range. We are both running Midland MXT400s which are 40watt radios. They work great.

Hey Quinn, I have 3 gallon rotopax gas cans mounted on TrailRax side mounts. I have a JL and they mount directly to the rain gutter with no drilling. They also make a set for the JK but I believe you may have to drill or make some other modification. You can also mount 2 4 gallon tanks on each side. Glad you are enjoying the adventures!

Thanks Gerardo! Really glad you enjoyed it! I used my DJI Air 2S for this one. It’s a really good drone for the price point. I also have a Mavic Mini for backup.

I noticed new tires…. I seen all the balancing weights. Go beads instead. No rotation except wear, great for highway.
Awesome video that conveys adventure and discovery (although scouting with a drone is cheating) of my favorite old “Jeep trails.” Please don’t share too much location info i.e. GPS tracks so others can discover these places on their own.

Hi 6point1hemi. We did this trip in October...got bogged down with work and finally had a chance to edit the footage. It was chilly at night and pretty warm during the day. It's definitely a must see area!

Have you had any problems with your Rotopax fuel cells leaking? Mine leaked like crazy...
Hi Charlie, I haven’t had issues with leaking and I don’t believe Scott has either. 2 of my cans are around 6 years old and I used to mount them laying down in the roof rack I had the on my old Xterra and that leaked a little. I had to wrench the cap on pretty tight to prevent that. How do you mount yours?
@@OverlandScout81, I mounted mine vertically with the spout on top. Hearing your reply makes me think I just got a bad one and maybe I will buy more and hope for the best. Can you guide me to the side mounts you have on your Jeep? Thanks for your reply...
@@charlieswearingen500 It's my pleasure Charlie. The side mounts ar from TrailRax and they make them for the JL and JK. I have a JL and it was super easy to install with no drilling. It basically mounts onto the rain gutter. From my understanding the JK version is a little more involved and might require some drilling. I'm pretty sure you can purchase the Rotopax lids and maybe a new one will keep it from leaking...just a thought. www.trailrax.com/collections/trailrax-products

@1:40 wouldn't it been easier to just dig a hole in front of the rock with a shovel and attempt to push the rock into said hole and either back or continue forward? This could reduce any risk of damage to the front axle area.
Hi C_INSAYN. Yeah, you're probably right but he really wasn't that stuck. That whole sequence was like 45 seconds. He was coming around the corner to position the jeep for a picture and didn't see the rock. Agree though, probably best to be safe than sorry.
It’s not obvious, but squeezing by bushes after marking a turn is why I didn’t see the rock. I could have gone around it if I’d seen it
@@ScottMcnairKC I get ya. I just cringed when you backed up and there was some gnarly scraping sounds on your axle. No worries, you handled it as you saw fit.

Same here. I’m definitely more conservative when I have my daughters with me. Need to know when to take risks and when to pull back. Whenever I take them I switch from hardcore exploration to just making sure they have a great experience. Safe travels out there my friend!
