  • Day 20 thru hiking the Oregon Desert Trail. Today's hike continues up Guano Creek and leads me to the Hart Mountain Hot Springs, within the Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge. I enjoy a soak in the hot springs pools and continue hiking to the Hart Mountain visitor center. Last chance to fill up on water, from here it's a 40 mile water carry. The terrain flattens out and becomes a sea of sagebrush again, with lots of deep sand and some cross country hiking.

I agree with the wide open being a comfort. That there are still plenty of empty miles where nothing is done nor can be but to walk.

Ten hours of sleep, clean water to filter, clean clothes and shoes, AND a hot spring to soak in!!??? I bet you were feeling GREAT that day!!

This looked like a very nice day on the trail. Hot spring soak must have been fantastic. 🙂 Loved seeing that footage of the pronghorn. It does make me sad to hear about people killing rattlesnakes on their properties. Of course, I know people have been doing that for generations, but it just sucks. Rattlers are a valuable component of ecosystems and try to avoid people. And they're awesome for preventing mice and rats over populating. /mini rant

Such a nice way to break up this section, with a few hours here at the hot springs!

The hot spring looked like a rare trail luxury!

Odd no one else was at hot spring. I've never found it empty. That area gets crazy in hunting season.

I am really enjoying this trail with you. I lived in Modoc county, CA for 19 years and worked as a fish head for BLM and USFS. Maybe it’s comforting scenery?! Thanks for sharing your hike!

I love to fish, thanks for your work... many people don't realize that we wouldn't have fish to fish for if it weren't for hatcheries and planting, in many places!

6 liters for 40 miles. I know it can be done but dang. I feel bad as yesterday did 6 miles and almost 2 liters

I've done a few 50+ mile segments on 5L, over 2-3 days. I may be part Camel, haha. But seriously, i think the body gets more efficient at water consumption after a few weeks on trail. Also helps when it's not incredibly hot and without big climbs, of course. Just my theory.
