Hart Mountain, by motorcycle, in the Oregon Outback

  • I took one last multi-day trip for the season, riding the Nomad, my Yamaha Tenere 700 motorcycle, to the Oregon Outback. I decided to visit the Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge, a remote high desert region deep into South Eastern Oregon’s wild high desert plains. Such a vast open place with cultural and natural wonders. The trip pushed my boundaries as a new rider of an adventure motorcycle. Little did I know that I would need to return just a week later.

Thanks for doing this. I’m a 70 year old adventure rider too. And I ride alone, because all my old riding buddies are dead or too injured to ride now.

Camp Warner @32:10 - I have visited several of the old Cavalry Army posts and camps in Idaho and Oregon. Camp Warner was under the command of Gen George Crook (later of Geronimo fame in Arizona). Gen Crook developed most of his guerilla fighting techniques with the Piutes in Oregon and Idaho during the 1864 - 1868 war. Techniques he would later use with Apaches in Arizona. Crook and his troopers were stationed at Camp Warner from out of Fort Boise along with Oregon and California volunteers. I noticed both graves for troopers Cantrell and Debold showed that they were only 20 and 21 years of age. Awful young to be cheated out of life, but they must have been brave, hardy young men. I can't imagine the miles they must have traveled on horseback in sweltering heat or winter snow storms with thirty-mile-per-hour winds constantly whipping them...

As to some of the items left at the two grave sites, you mentioned Camp Warner, military grave site? There are a number of traditions to which I offer the following possible explanation for the coins.
Penny - A penny at the grave site means you visited. You have no formal relationship with the deceased, but you honor their service and their family.
Nickel - A nickel is left if you and the deceased person trained at boot camp together.
Dime - In the case of a dime, you served with the deceased person in some capacity.
Quarter - Finally, a quarter indicates you were with the deceased when he or she died.

    • @MySeniorMoments
      @MySeniorMoments  Před 2 lety +4

I figured there was a tradition, but these fellows died 150 years ago so nobody alive would have served with them, chasing and killing the native Indian population, (which is a bit questionable to honor, looking back at history). I think some people see that others left some coins, so they do as well without really knowing the meaning. Thanks for the background info.

Wonderful video, thank you! I was at Hart Mt several yrs ago with my brother, but in a truck unfortunately. Have you explored Steens Mt, near French Glen? Worth a visit, but not until late July or August, when the snow will finally be gone from the 10,000 ft summit.
I’ve been an avid motorcyclist my entire life, but at 67 I have been wondering about the wisdom of riding alone. Your experiences encourage me to prepare adequately and get out there. Thank you again!

Gorgeous trip, excellent videography! Really enjoying your channel. I love your choice of routes and destinations. I love eastern OR/WA. Nobody realizes what's out there. It's amazing. Nice to see some drone video! You are gonna be a pro in no time! Cheers for tackling that water crossing. Piece of cake. I ride a street bike with ADV tires on it. I've ridden a few roads like the ones you were on. Haven't tested the crash bars so far. One thing, making the change from street to dirt, you have to reverse your center of gravity in turns. On the street we are used to leaning into turns, on the dirt we have to keep our weight on the outside peg. Think of those dirt track racers with their inside foot out. On your bike you can stand up in rocky spots. Can't do that much on my bike, pegs too far back, bars too low. Oh, when I get that far from a pump, I carry a two gallon can with me. Anyway, thanks for taking us along on a fantastic ride! Looking forward to the next one!
Hehehe! "You can't miss it." Ha! Buddy...I just did! Hahahaha!

Thanks for sharing. Yup understand how easy it is to misplace or even change hands and not remember what I did with an item. I would have done the same thing go right back and look for it, a prayer to st. Anthony of lost items, always helps too.

Enjoying catching up on your back catalogue of videos, and in my late 50s now, find that I relate very well to your style.....meaning that I prefer the far, lonely places as well! Just as a reference for you, on the Dalton Hwy last summer, between Coldfoot camp and Prudho Bay, I got right at 240 miles on one tank of fuel with my T7. The display said that I was getting right at 54 mpg, even with full riding gear, camping gear, on gravel, thru the Brooks range. I did have extra fuel with, but was impressed all over again with this bike! Ride safe!

    • @MySeniorMoments

Just a suggestion. Maybe take a riding course. You seem to be very uncomfortable on your bike. Learn to stand on the pegs to weigh your pegs.

Enjoying the ride. Looks like Namibia which I spend quite a bit of time riding. I did the Colorado and Utah BDR I rode a few years back on Africa Twin in Autumn. Really like the Yammy T7 but those tyres do not look ideal for the riding in this show. Some Metzler Karoos would be good.. even TKC 80s. Lovely weather … nice campsites

hey brother you can relax about that bike your on. it'll handle way more than you think it will. i ride my roadking in way worse conditions with a 85# pitbull with me. yes ive done some modifications to the bike to be able to do that and ive been ridding jeez for 50 years but my bike weights 1000 lbs . so if i can do it you can. now im not saying that the roadking doesn't hit the ground , it does about a dozen times last year when we circumnavigated the U.S. one of those times i got myself buried in mud up to my bash plate but look im fine. enjoy your ride and worry just a little less.

Super nice bike, but I can’t help think with your riding, a lighter bike would be more encouraging and less daunting in certain challenging circumstances! Honda crf300l or a Yamaha wr250r. I’m a “senior” myself. Own a Honda CRF 250 rally and do similar riding. I’m glad I’m light!
