- Hi, I'm Dan and I'm cycling from Alaska to Argentina! This is my 10th episode about my time bikepacking 500 miles through Oregon's high desert in winter. I started off on the bikepacking.com Oregon Outback route before making my own path through Southern Oregon. I endured the coldest temperatures I've ever experienced, rode some of roughest roads I've ever ridden and dealt with extreme isolation for the first time since Alaska. I stayed in ghost towns, bathed in hot springs and even spent the night at an abandoned ranch, all while having a great time!

There are way too many cycling channels on YT these days, most of which are not worth watching. It takes a humble guy like this to come along, who is obviously doing his trip for all the right reasons, to remind you that there are still some people who matter out there. Great shot framing, editing and music make this an absolute joy to watch. I subscribed in under 3 minutes. Stay safe brother 🙏
I lived and grew up in Paisley. I'm glad someone can show off just how brutal yet beautiful our state can be.
What a pleasure to see our beautiful state from your perspective! Hope you enjoyed your time in Oregon!
You are becoming more and more my favourite bike travel channel here on CZcams. Nice work and I love your positive attitude. Inspiring. I wish you all the best.
My feeling exactly.
Thank you so much!!!
Hey, you know the hot water bottle trick right? If you bring most of the water in your Nalgene to a boil, fill it to the top, drop it in a sock and sleep with it tucked right up between your legs. The arteries there will pump heated blood through your body. It makes a huge difference when camping in the cold. I actually use reflectex bubble wrap envelopes around my water bottle. Also use it to keep my food warm while dehydrating. Works well! Can be used to sit on as well. Down booties are awesome too. I always bring them to sleep in if I might be camping in the cold. I use Enlightened Equipment synthetic insulated booties.
Finally a good insulated pad is crucial. Maybe you have that already?
Happy trails!
Yeah! learnt this after a couple of cold nights it's such a game changer.
Pretty weird sitting here thinking how beautiful those B-roll shots are before realizing I literally live there and can look out my window and see the same thing. Better yet, I could go outside and do the same thing in 10 minutes. Great video! Thanks for showing the beauty of Oregon!
Well!! It's about time, Dan! We've been wondering where you're at.
Haha I'm a bit behind! Currently in Mexico on the Baja, hope you two are doing well!
This was a joy to watch. I grew up in Bend and am intimately familiar with all the sites you biked along the route. While Oregon is recognized for its rain, geographically speaking, much of the state is made up of the high desert east of the Cascade Range. I am planning to bike the Oregon Outback Trail this Spring. All the best on your journey south.
Awesome you're going to have an amazing time :)
I like your style and editing. Makes it feel like we are apart of the journey (except all the hard work for many of the miles you ride)
Nice work! I saw the 45th parallel sign and knew exactly where you were outside of Fossil. Thanks to taking us along. I love eastern OR.
This is why I'm signed up on warmshowers the joy of meeting wonderful people like this gentleman
This is the first time I've started watching a travel series like this while the person is still traveling. I recognize a lot of these Pacific Northwest locations. Best of luck!
I bicycled Canada to Mexico down the west coast a few years back and have been itching for another trip since then. This looks absolutely incredible! Thank you for sharing it with us in such a beautiful way. Very inspiring.
Gosh that looks hardwork, filming, cycling, getting frozen… Well done, love the music too. What a fab trip..
Oh this is great, I know all these places. You hit many of my favorite places in Oregon
Visited antelope in 2016 for the total solar eclipse, fun fact about the town is that while the layout of the Oregon map in rainbow 6 siege is inspired by the waco siege, the location/setting for the map is inspired by the Rajneeshpuram commune takeover of the town and surrounding areas.
That’s awesome, Antelope would be perfect to see the eclipse
Thoroughly enjoying your Vlog of your adventure. Really appreciate the effort you put into your filming, the drone, different camera angles, etc. Great commentary too. Look forward to your next one!
Thank you so much for sharing your adventure. We are enjoying watching your videos so much!! They are stunning and breathtaking and we are inspired by your positive attitude. KEEP PUSHING!!
I’m so excited to find your channel as I also was with Iohan’s. I am binging the rest of your videos just as I did with his. It is my opinion that he was a goodwill ambassador to the world at large, and now you are too! Thank You Dan, and safe travels to you. Looking forward to your next episodes!
Thanks, you have no idea how much this means to me!!
Yesss finally, love the use of the map to see well where you are, keep up the good work
Thanks will do!
Awesome! Ill have to go back and watch earlier vids. Hello from Alberta. 👍🇨🇦😎
Saludos from Ensenada , Baja Ca! 1/15/24- we met you earlier today and we are cheering you on in your journey
Great to meet you!! Thanks again for the empanada!
Always a great day when you post a new video!
“that’s just someone shooting a gun nearby, welcome to america” 😂😂😂
You're THE man ! Brill content , thanks !
Great video. Thanks for taking the time to share. Living in Bend, planning to do that route this spring on Tandems.
Awesome you're going to have a great time
First time that I have watched this video and subscribed right away. Just a treat to watch, good narrative, and wonderful videography.
Live your attitude and positivity. So many unlucky/unfortunate moments that would probably ruin my mood and day but you view them in a positive way (like little lessons). Lovely to see and be inspired by
I appreciate that thank you!
A bike with a fridge :) Very beautiful video and really interesting stories. Have a safe trip!
I've really enjoyed watching your content, the things you share have been really cool to see and watching the people help you along the journey is nice!
so glad i found your channel, so true. keep up!
I have watched a few of these biking channels but your’s always is the one we enjoy the most.
Awesome video! From your incredible shots to positive energy, your videos have been such a treat to watch. Looking forward to the next one. Safe travels!
Yeah his cinematography is really well done!
Thanks a lot for sharing your adventure with us. Amazing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
These are great! Thanks so much for sharing!!
Thank you! Love you energy and attitude. Fun to see my stomping grounds from a fresh perspective. Still afraid of rabbits spent a long night drive in eastern Oregon slaying rabbits in my vehicle. At first tried swerving but too many of them. Was gruesome, macabre and eventually almost comical
I really like your attitude. Looking always for the positive side of every experience. A true inspiration. Subscribed :-)
That area is cool. It's very different than a lot of places. I wish I'd spend more time there - and perhaps I will in the future.
I would definitely recommend it, it's a wild place
Thanks for sharing your adventures with us, I watch your videos every day on TikTok, definitely my favorite channel. You inspire me a lot and I hope to live an adventure like yours one day. I wish you all the best from France !!
Great video and I enjoyed your positivity
Thanks!!
Thank you Dan, a wonderful video. Happy and safe trails for 2024.👍
Another great video Dan - some beautiful scenery in Oregon. I'm impressed again by your attitude when things don't go well: you don't seem to get upset or let it get you down. I think that attitude will see you all the way down to South America.
Derek in Ottawa.
Thank you!!
Loving your videos Dan. Keep living the dream.😀. Always say YES to any local offers
Thanks!!
Just found your channel - great trip, i love Oregon too , you are sharing a good story ! Well done.
Bert - an old guy living a grateful life in southern oregon
I'd heard of this route, but had no idea what it would be like.... Absolutely amazing it turns out!
Great vid! 😁
Another brilliant video Dan with great scenery. Manchester wont seem the same when you eventually get back. Although it looks grueling at times you still maintain a positive attitude and take the time to show us some fantastic scenery. Keep up the good work and take care.
Thanks Dennis!
Worth the wait! Best of luck in Baja!
Damn! Beautiful filming abs beat of luck with the trip!!! Glad you enjoyed Oregon :)
Thanks!!
Safe Travels Dan. Amazing adventure.
Welcome to America, land of the free and the brave!
Thanks for the video Dan, I really enjoyed it.
Glad you enjoyed!
Nice effort...and great camera work!!
Thanks!
awesome!!
Do you edit these yourself! So so entertaining, best tour vlogs I've watched 😃
Yeah all me! Glad you enjoyed :)
I get so excited when you post, I'm always wondering where you are on your journey !
Endeavor to persevere “ Chief Dan George: Hats off to you sir!!
Fabulous film.
I really liked the town of Antelope. Much quieter there than Shaniko, which is right next to a highway. And the little campground had running water to wash your face + a fridge with snacks. Cyclists: if you are trying to decide between the two, I say stop in Antelope! Also, there is a ton of great camping (and pretty dependable water) in the Ochocos north of Prineville.
Yeah Antelope was definitly a better place to camp, the owners of the campground there were lovely!
Hi Dan, great to see that you are doing well and safe! As usually, we truly enjoyed watching your latest video and follow along your journey. Sorry, to hear that we won’t see you in AZ. Be safe and all pedals ahead!!
Beautiful video
Excellent video!
Wow finally a youtuber who is doing a bike packing trip and spends time talking about the people and places they are encountering, telling me some of the history of the places. So many bikepacker bloggers are me, me ,me.
You got a sub. A few maps here and there in your vlogs would be good.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed :)
Bravo Mate!
Nice work man! Glad to see some roads I'll probably never take my bike to myself.
Loved cycling through Oregon on the Trans -AM.
Some great editing here, really professional finish. Well done.
Thanks!!
This was the first of your post that I viewed. I have now watched them all and can say very well done. Your enthusiasm and drive is awesome. Would like to have seen your bike shop stops and info on the repairs. I would look into getting a bright orange colored vest for wearing in areas during hunting season. Stay Safe…
Excellent video. I feel like they’re getting better and better. I knew eastern Oregon was rural, but I didn’t know it was that desolate and beautiful.
Eastern Oregon is the least populated in the lower 48...amazing place if you are into arid landscapes, an ocean of sage brush and more stars at night than you will ever see somewhere else. All part of the Big Basin therefore some areas resemble Utah e.g. Leslie Gulch
God Bless -from Ireland ..excellent video..happily reminds me of Iohan's a few years ago.
Thank you Iohan is one of my biggest heros!
These videos are up there w/ Iohan’s and Greg & Victoria’s. Looking forward to the next chapter. And to my next adventure.
Thank you!!! This means so much to me :)
Hmmm… I’m old and I never knew until now that Oregon has an outback. America is huge and so varied.
Every country's landscape invokes a certain feeling, and for me the USA always invokes a feeling of longing...
For someone or something, like a craving for a hug...
Probably just me though 😂
I think it's the use of Western guitar and the tall mountains
Great video 👍
Thanks 👍
Too bad you skipped northwestern nevada. Its beautiful and the gravel roads are well maintained. Great video!
Last time i was in bend was 25 years ago very nice place
Watching you from morocco 🇲🇦 north africa ❤
Awesome!
Hey Dan… a fellow Brit here - from Deal in Kent - but now living in Wisconsin. I love your channel mate. Your editing and the “balance” of your storytelling is brilliant.
Two questions:
The blue thing in your ear… I’m assuming is connected to your phone?
Prineville, OR… how did you enjoy sleeping in the sauna? From those two brief clips I recognized the WS host’s backyard! I stayed there during my cross country ride in 2021. Be well. Be safe.
Optimistic Chris
Thank you! That's my headphones yeah, sometime I forget to take them out when I film. Sleeping in the Sauna was a nice treat to be honest after some cold nights!
Great video and ride ! I did the Oregon Outback from South to North a few years ago- it seemed like you took a different route on the Southern part ? I don't remember it being that isolated... Keep up the great work
Yeah after Fort Rock I left the Oregon Outback to go ride the bikepacking route in the Hart Mountain Antelope Refuge
Thanks for sharing your adventure…how much planning goes into a trip like this?
Surprisingly little, I'm just kind of winging it as I go along
Eastern Oregon is a real delight. idk if it was on your route, but the Alvord desert and Steens mountains would've made for a great side mission.
Think that was even further east of where I was, maybe next time!
Some interesting history for you of the small town of Antelope, OR: a cult called the Rajneesh that was started in India moved their entire compound and built basically a small city outside of Antelope OR in the 80’s and had a conflict between the cult members and the Antelope residents resulting in water poisoning, local election fraud, and more!! There’s a docuseries on it called wild wild country 😊
I need to give it a watch but I’ve heard the story it’s fascinating!
People form the state of Oregon call it Eastern Oregon, the part of the state east of the cascade mountains, in lieu of "Oregon Outback", FYI.
Should've followed the Columbia east a ways, its too pretty! You'll have to come back
I've gotta go back one day I had such a good time there
First time watching. The photography is top notch. Was wondering what jacket you are wearing (the yellow one).
It's one of the Patagonia gore-tex climbing jackets... can't remember exactly which one though.

Public lands ftw! Fuq yea Amerca
What song is playing throughout the video? Love it
I heard if you wear two socks, you feet get cold because no room to move your toes to generate heat.
Interesting that does kind of make sense
I love your videos looks an amazing. Are you riding tubless ?
Yeah switched to tubeless before leaving Canada, will never go back to tubes now!
I just found your channel! great video what do you use to film?
Sony RX100 VII, GoPro Hero 12, DJI Mini 3 Pro
hey i loved this video cause i for the most part bikepacked the same roads, shaniko is indeed cool and i spent the night there on the porch of the townhall building.how do you keep your electronics charged?
I have 2 powerbanks and stop every 5 days to charge them :)
thanks i only asked cause you said you hadnt slept in a hotel in a few months @@DanCyclesTheWorld
What’s the camping chair you’re using?
It's a therm-a-rest chair kit, converts your sleeping pad into a chair
What are you doing for personal protection when you are in the woods camping and traveling with strangers?
Not a lot really, never really felt much in danger so far!
What Garmin are you using?
Edge 1030
What time of year was this flimed
November
What is the song in the middle of the video? 5:05 mark?
You should never ever , run out of food. Don’t you have reserve dehydrated food for emergencies? Why put pressure on yourself to ‘have’ to make a particular destination in one day? Only to then sit tight for a few days. Oh well, your call. Enjoy the trip and thanks for the vid.
Sauvage,beau,paisible….🙌🏿magnifique
shit one day i’ll do this.
Do it!
My name is also Dan and I also want to cycle the world hhhh
