  • Come join me and my rock hunting buddies for a rock hunting trip in the beautiful Hart Mountain Antelope Refuge. We had lots of good finds and an unusual and not so fun, surprise when we found a couple of California Bighorn Rams dead.

Very nice clip you made. My wife and I like rock hunting but climbing a mountain may be more then we can take on at our age. Thanks for letting us view your travels.

Hello Dan, sorry for the long delay for an answer. Anyway, the tool is a Gem Scoop. Not that you asked but I'll give you my opinion anyway. The scoop works great, its lightweight and makes a great walking stick. The only negative I have for the design is that its better on flat ground when it comes to scooping. On a beach, it can't be beat. Doing the kind of hunting that I do, the scoop width and angle can make it difficult. I wish I knew a fix but it is still WAY better than not.

The whole area is rich with Indian history and yes we usually find a couple every trip. FYI though, its illegal to pick them up while in the Hart Mountain Refuge.

It's illegal to collect rocks on Hart Mountain?

Dud you find out from the ranger if you can keep the antlers?

@@LetscampingwithTara No, you cant keep any dead heads in Oregon, especially bighorn sheep. Poachers will shoot them, then come back months later and claim they found a dead head.

Thanks for taking us on your trip to Hart Mountain! Breath taking! Sure would love to get my hands on some of those gorgeous rocks. I live just north of the Gulf in Louisiana & we have no rocks. Only black mud. Do you sell polished rocks?

Hey Dave! Are you planning on going back up there any time soon? I have driven past those hills two times before and never realized you could go up there and find that amazing stuff. I'd love to go!

If you are a rock hound, check out the washes of Fairburn, South Dakota(fairburn agates) or the area just south and west of Jewel cave National park in western South Dakota. You can find TeePee canyon agates. They will be near TeePee canyon work center just west of Jewel cave. some of the most beautiful cut and polished agates that I have ever seen. You should also check out the abandoned mines in the southern black hills and any Wyoming claims that have been abandoned. Bureau of land management handles this. Check with the local BLM offices.

I'd kept those big horns. He won't figure out what happened. If they were poached, the horns wouldn't be there. In harsh winters animals die in ravines close to eachother. Hanging out to avoid the cold winds and snow. Either froze, starved, predation, or avalanche. Like the old saying goes shoot shovel and shut up.
