- Day 19 thru hiking the Oregon Desert Trail. Another cold and wet morning with low clouds. Today, I continue hiking around Hart Lake, get water from a trough near an old homestead, and hike up to Hart Mountain. The most scenic views came in the middle of the day on the climb up. I pass another old homestead, remarkably intact. There are several streams to cross, and it's bitter cold now.

So desolate! Major benefit, no people! I still can't believe this is Oregon. The beauty and vastness is something to savor!
Great camp spot. Surprisingly cold for May. Really enjoying these episodes!
Top scenery from today: feet in muddy creek, a tree, a backpack, a broken down cabin, more roads.
there used to be a pipe from the spring source into the tank. That cabin is the original homestead in the valley. And cow shit in the living room is how you get rid of flies in the kitchen!
going to have to remember that trick for the flies! That's a good one
Enjoying the wildlife in your wild life out there on the ODT. Weather sure can be elusive, being first hot then cold then cold again. This week has sure shown some changes, eh? A beautiful and adventurous trek, with antelope, chipmunk and ant.
The locals say that they usually don't plant any crops until after memorial day, just can't trust the weather until then. Wild weather keeps these places, well, wild!
Wow, you came up at Blue Sky, the site of the old Fort and graves. Well done!
Shorts and T-shirts. I hear that!
Some of the route decisions on the ODT really make me scratch my head, and Hart Mtn. is for sure one of those. Goes out of its way to avoid a direct route that makes sense so that you can stay on some boring jeep road. From the north end of Hart Lake, the official route takes about 35 mi. to get to Hot Spring CG; going north from the lake and up DeGarmo Canyon would get you there in 10.
How many nights did you have on this tent before having zipper issues? Seems like it has gotten a lot of use! Seeing those old abandoned houses makes me sad. Where did they go? Did life get better or worse? I imagine the kids playing outside, mom cooking dinner... where are the descendants?
Well over 100 nights before having issues. I used this tent on my basin and range trail home as well as the Mojave Sonoran trail route, both of which were quite sandy. That really takes a toll on the zippers!
Makes me feel good about my June 6th start date.
Smart. I said many times along this route, June 1st would have been my start date had i known how cold it was going to be. I still think you'll have plenty of water this year
@Seeking Lost yeah I'm pretty optimistic about the water situation this year.
Dude! What happened to days 7, 8 and 15? Regardless, looks like a pretty epic adventure that I didn't even know existed.
They are rest days/no hike days.
Really enjoying this hike. Some great scenery. Sounds like youre a bit congested every morning? Allergies?
With these shorter thru hikes, how does your weight maintain?
Thanks Bill! No allergies, that's probably just me sounding tired and in general just not being a morning person. Ha. You know, I didn't see much of a weight fluctuation on the ODT. In the past I would loose a lot of weight from muscle loss, because I was a regular weight lifter. I'd loose the muscle fast because my body fat percentage was already low... it's the first thing to go. Since I've been in the van when not hiking, I have no access to a gym anymore, and don't have the excess muscle to burn. I think that keeps me at a more stable weight. I sure do miss the gym though, worst part about being in the van!
@@SeekingLost get yourself some kettle bells. Great way to maintain on the road.
What day did you start this grand advnture?
I believe i started the ODT May 12th
I was wondering actually "how long will Eric take before he just says F-it, let's just climb over this hill instead" for some time hehe :) Isn't it funny how the moment you choose to just follow the trail instead of venture off that it leads you into a long ass pointless hike? Well, funny peculiar, not funny ha-ha.
Haha right! I didn't deviate from the main route too much on the ODT actually, mainly just avoided some sections of trail that go way out of the way to hit cow ponds and such. It was kind of nice just following a vetted route for once. But then the route creator in me looks at some things like, "i would have done this instead". This was one of those moments
