Montane Summer Spine Challenger North 2023
In this video we return to the Pennine Way and continue our ultra-distance adventures with the Montane Spine Race, last summer we did the Challenger South and this year it's the Challenger North. 160 miles in less than 96 hours from Hardraw in the Yorkshire Dales via High Force, High Cup Nick, Cross Fell, Hadrian's Wall and the Cheviots over to Kirk Yetholm in Scotland. This event was one of the greatest adventures of my life and quite possibly the hardest thing I've done to date.

Watch on a big screen
Sadly not, that was dirt on the sensor of my camera that was present in the first few days of footage and can be seen in other shots 🤦😂 thanks for watching
Is there a way of listening to your music? Thanks in advance
great video thank you ❤ 👍
Thanks for watching 👍
@@DeanRead THANK YOU ❤👍
I was on that snake inn path on Saturday. Saw 10 other people. Next walk is along fairbrook.
Have a great time, it’s a stunning route. Thanks for watching
Awesome
Thanks for watching
A wonderful treat this video is
Thanks for watching 👍
I know this comment is late but i was just wondering what trail running shoes you wear? New to channel but loving the content
Thanks for watching, I can recommend either Inov8 or Altra 👍
do you know what i feel when i watch Deans videos ? Pure goodness i thought that yesterday a nice guy in a nice place and that music is beautiful maybe its because im a Yorkshire man myself but i can feel the connection to the land in the music ive been waiting since 2018 to go again im meant to be going in a few days maybe to High Peak
Thanks for watching, this was a great adventure even if the weather was a bit wild
Love the channel Dean 💗
Thanks for watching 🙏
was re watching your videos most of the day yesterday love the music
Great video 👍 How narrow is the arete? Didnt look overly narrow but videos never do these things justice. How long is the arete in terms of distance? Thanks.
Thanks for watching. The Arete is about 600m or so in length, I can't remember exactly I'm afraid. It's a great route
@@DeanRead thanks for the reply. Been to the top of cmd before on my own but weather was awful so I turned back.
Smash
It came close to going into the plug hole at one point 😂
Many thanks for these videos. I walked the PW solo in 1985 and did it north to south, stopping at B&Bs and pubs all the way. The thought of a long hot shower and delicious cooked evening meals certainly gave me something to look forward to, especially as the weather didn`t hear my prayers - rain, snow and more rain. Great experience and these videos brought back many happy memories.
Thanks for watching Rodders, it's a spectacular route isn't it. I was glad of a bed for the night especially on the longer days. I'd love to go back and walk it North to South one day. All the best
I’m off to walk the Limestone Way tomorrow over four days, south to north, so I was interested to watch your video of the southern part of it. I enjoyed it very much, it’s very watchable, unlike some others I tried! Good to know about the fields full of cattle…I’ll watch out for those.
Thanks for watching Anna, it's a great route and I hope you have a nice wander
Classic old school GT Zasker, very nice!!!
Thanks for watching 👍
I Hope your ok Dean
I'm all good thanks, still have lots of videos to edit but life is getting in the way 😂 Newborn baby and work keeping me busy. Thanks for watching
@@DeanRead Nice im so glad your ok ive been watching since like 2016 im finally going back to the Peak District at the end of the month and Congrats on the baby !
@@infraRedRidingHood have a great time in the Peaks, I'll be there in a couple of weeks time with work too
@@DeanRead I was thinking of taking an MRE
Weres the bothy
Just to the North East of Cross Fell on the Pennine Way, search for Greg's Hut and you'll find it. Thanks for watching
Thanks for video. I’m hoping to do my first wild camp up there in the next week or so. Looks lovely, been up before but cloud was down and pouring with rain. Hoping for better weather!
Thanks for watching Luke, fingers crossed for some good weather for you, I'm sure you'll have a great time.
Loved your film, a big inspiration for me, I’ve so gotta have a crack at this race next year. 👍🏻
Thanks for watching Peter, the Challenger North is a spectacular event. I really enjoyed the Challenger South too but the North is perhaps my favourite part of the Pennine Way. Looking forward to seeing you on the start line next year, I'll be at the event in some capacity
A wonderful encore for me. I walked that same trail about 2 months ago, spent the night at the Meanach bothy. It was very wet and freezing cold. The hike onto Forth William became a survival march after I fell in the marshes. My twisted knee is yet to heal. Great views all the way. Your time lapse has ticked the gopro as an essential for my next hikes. We also carried way too much gear! I'll probably backtrack from the bothy but....powering through feels like completing the task. Thanks for the refresh guys.👍🏿
Thanks for watching. It sounds like your experience was pretty much the same as ours when we first started hiking in our early 20s. We carried way too much and it felt like a proper expedition. Hope your ankle is on the mend soon, next time you do the trek it will be 10 times easier with what you've learned this time. All the best. Dean
Hi Dean, cracking video! I'm racing this summer's Challenger South. Just wondering if you know offhand some of the locations on the course where you could fill up on water? I'm debating whether to invest in a filtration system too, if I think I'll struggle to make between CPs with the 3L I'll be carrying. Grateful for any thoughts...
Thanks for watching, you're going to have a great adventure. I took a filter with me but didn't need to use it, I managed to grab water from the Spine Safety Team (SST) out on the course on the way to CP1 easily enough. Water points aren't guaranteed though so I'd take a filter if I were you. Sometimes the team are called away to deal with an incident so it's best to have a back up. Plenty of spots to filter plus a few places along the way after CP1 at Craven Tri Club Tent near Cowling, Lothersdale (at pub), Gargrave (public toilets), Horton-in-Ribblesdale (Public Toilets, tap on front of building) not to mention the Coop at Gargrave too if you arrive within opening hours. Feel free to keep the questions coming, I work for the Spine Race now so I'll see you at Edale no doubt 👍
Great video and a good heads up. Im due to do that section on Thursday 30th May.
Excellent, it's a stunning part of the Pennine Way. I hope you have a great adventure
Funny story about the Earby Hostel when I did the PW back in 1996. All of us staying there that night went to the local pub except for one German girl who went missing. When we got back to the Hostel the male warden had locked the doors. He let us in 10 mins later with a very sheepish looking German girl re-appearing from inside.
Thanks for watching, funny story 😀👍
Wow, how lovely of people. What a nice gesture to get a note and a flapjack. I am looking forward to getting to Malham - been camping there and it's superb.
Markham is stunning, hope you get there on a day when it's not busy 🤞
@DeanRead I guess it's become popular, as everywhere, since lockdown. Prio to that it was relatively sparse.
@mapgirl70 yeah it seems like everywhere has got busier since lockdown.
Wow, you needed that hostel after 26 miles. Great video.
Earby Hostel comes highly recommended👍
That food looked amazing - will defo have to add that pub on to our Itinerary.
The White House is a great place to stop at if the weather's bad, thanks for watching

Thanks for watching, it's a beautiful place
Doing the CW Friday to Wed this coming week because ive got 6 days off. bit cheating though as ill be getting picked up each night and spending the night in my own bed, (plus sid eof living locally) just came across your channel to get some ideas of what to expect, ive walked a lot of it in sections before but hardly any of the coastal part. Cant wait.
I hope you have a great time Lee, nothing wrong with staying in a comfy bed each night, you still walk the route which is all that matters. Thanks for watching 👍
Great a good film enjoyed it cycle a lot done them both of the trails out from Gainsborough
Thanks for watching Trevor, great trails with a wealth of history
That’s one brutal race congratulations.
It certainly is, I couldn’t do it 😂

Enjoyed the video. It was a Pair of RAF Sabres from 66 squadron on their way back to RAF Linton on Ouse, they descended through low cloud into the hills unfortunately.
Thanks for watching, always amazed when I find wreckage up there.

I’m still unsure as I’ve heard it pronounced both ways, I’ll have to ask Helen when I’m there over the summer 😂
After 26 years I will finally be going there again this summer. :)
Have a great time, thanks for watching
Make sure you stop by the water fall
How very very weird , my audio also went while was in the same place just a couple months back 😮🤔 …. And my experience was pretty much identical with being in the cloud ….
That's strange, I'll have to refresh my memory on the audio issues I had during this walk. It was such a long time ago now :-) thanks for watching
Theres a lot of people there! What month did you do this?
April I think, since the dreaded Covid it’s got worse. It’s busy all the time at weekends in Spring/Summer/Autumn
Love your videos Dean awesome keep them coming 🙏

Thanks for watching Paul. We do have a great network of trails in the Peaks don’t we. Always enjoy a nice ride along the High Peak, Monsal and Tissington
