  • In this video we head to the Yorkshire Dales for another recce of the Pennine Way, it was our final run in preparation for the Montane Summer Spine Challenger in June 2022. We got the train from Garsdale to Horton-in-Ribblesdale, ran up and down Pen-y-ghent and over to Hawes then Hardraw where the race finishes. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day out and great for Stef to familiarise herself with the final section.

    Always nice to revisit sections of the Pennine Way, Dean. I saw your social media posts after you had completed the Spine Challenge. Looked like you didn’t get your wish for cloudy skies 😆. Very well done to you both for completing it. Walking the trail is tough enough, so trail running it must take things to a whole new level

      Thanks for watching Anthony. The Challenger was an amazing event, definitely the hardest thing I've ever done. Looking forward to reviewing the footage of the event soon. Have my TGO Challenge videos to edit first though.

    Nice vid.
    By sheer coincidence I did this route last Tuesday (just behind the tail end of the Spine Race I’m guessing). It was hot and I was pretty glad I hadnt forgot my hat Dean (!)..
    It’s a pretty clear easy navigation route. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to start running/walking in the Dales. Great views
    The only problem is it’s a linear route. There is a taxi service based in Hawes (dont have the number, sorry) for those who don’t fancy the logistics of the infrequent train to the start.
    Horton to Hardraw without Pen must be about 17-18 miles. But I wouldn’t want to do it at night in January after no sleep!

      @DeanRead  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks for watching Richard. The sun was unrelenting on the final day of our Spine Challenger. There is just no shelter along this part of the Pennine Way, infact there isn't a great deal on the Pennine as a whole 😁 The Little White Bus is really handy for the Train but will look at the Taxi service too. We had to beg a lift home from Hawes from my brother last week as the train strike made getting home pretty much impossible by public transport but I understand the reasons for it happening.

      @@DeanRead yep, I think there was one tree just before Ling Gill, with sheep and sheep shit under it. Otherwise zilch.
      Recommend Trail and Fell Running in the Yorkshire Dales by Pete Ellwood. If you fancy some different routes, mostly circular

      I've seen that book, there is a similar one for the Peaks. I love looking at maps and plotting routes, if there is a name for someone who loves gazing at maps then it definitely applies to me 😁

    Great video, postman Pat made me laugh, I can definitely see it as I used to watch that too 😁 there are loads of those streams that disappear into the ground, some even pretty close to the road, as I remember them as a kid when on holiday with my parents. Ah I need to get back to postman pat country myself 😁
    Thanks for sharing Atb Mark

    • @DeanRead
      @DeanRead  Před 2 lety +1

      It definitely is postman pat country. Always reminds me of it especially around the Malham area. I was in the Station Pub at Ribbleshead in October last year and they have a big cave system map, it's absolutely fascinating to follow and compare where underground meets above ground.

    The van's looking good. Good to see more of the pennine way. How far is the challenger race? I'm guessing about 130 miles if it's half the way. No wonder you're expecting to be in a mess! 😄👍🏻🏃‍♂️

    • @DeanRead
      @DeanRead  Před 2 lety

      Thanks for watching Mark. The van is now green and the inside still needs more work. The Challenger is 108 miles so slightly less than half way. 5200 metres of ascent thrown in for good measure too in under 60 hours. The event was just over a week ago and it was both the hardest and one of the best things I've ever done. We loved it 😁
