  • In this video I tackle the Edale Skyline Race in the Peak District. It's an iconic trail / fell race and one that i'd dreamed of doing since I first learned of the route. I'm a newcomer to trail running but I was determined to give it my best shot and see if I could get around the course before the time cutoffs.

    Smashing video! I really enjoyed taking in the Skyline with you, and you're right, it's an absolute classic AL.
    I did the 95 race ( clockwise direction ) , the mist was down, sleet & rain all day & blowing a gale so all the classic Edale views were an extra treat for me.
    I hope your legs are back and you've got some more classics lined up.

    Great to see the latest stage in your transition from walker to runner. Even better to see you really pushing your limits and succeeding. Sheer stubbornness get you a long way! Congratulations.

      @DeanRead  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks for watching Dave. I've learned a lot over the years from various failures in life, a few hard lessons especially my original Pennine Way attempt. The sheer stubbornness is definitely a mindset I've had to develop but happy that I have. I will not quit until I physically can't walk 🤣 I'm sure that resolve will be tested numerous times this year on various challenges.

    What a fantastic run there Dean! I watch all your videos but rarely comment, loads of other folk do. I love the area there. I am a trekker rather than a runner and have toured around all the sections you ran this time, over the last 30 years. How you had the physical and emotional energy to vlog your run is amazing! Inspirational. I'm visiting the area this weekend to do the full Kinder Scout circuit again, but wildcamping and not running! So good, thanks for ALL your videos, Cheers, Warren

    • @DeanRead
      @DeanRead  Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you for watching Warren and for commenting. Time is our greatest resource and I really appreciate that people choose to spend some of theirs watching my adventures, I don't take that for granted. I hope you have a great time this weekend in the Peaks. I'll be on Kinder this weekend. I'm doing a race called the Peak District 70th Birthday Bash, it starts in Castleton, heads over to Hayfield and comes back via Kinder and Edale. Please say hi if you see me, I'll be a bit of an out of breath mess no doubt 🤣 All the best, Dean

    A massive crisp Top Gun style high five for that achievement Dean. I've watched your videos for a few years now and really enjoy them. You inspired me to get back out walking and as a result lost almost 3 stone and improved my mental wellbeing. I recently took my partner to Castleton where we did Cave Dale and the great ridge. She loved it :) A huge thanks for the videos, the inspiration and motivation.

    • @DeanRead
      @DeanRead  Před 2 lety

      Thanks Anthony. I really enjoyed the race, I was really nervous but once I was on the start line the nerves went away. Think it was because it was my first fell race rather than worrying about the distance. Training is going well for the Spine, I have a little 170+ mile walk across Scotland to do first in May, the TGO challenge should be a nice leg stretch before the brutal Spine Challenger 😁 All the best, Dean

    Amazing achievement Dean well done. We were walking that day around jaggers clough, hope cross, crookstone knoll and ringing roger that day. Not bad weather for the run i suppose, like you said a bit warm, very clear though. I checked out the entry requirements for this but can't really prove the fell running experience needed. I know the area well enough, been going for nearly 40 years, i'll maybe contact the organisers and see what they advise. Would love to run this. Joining a peaks running club isnt really an option for me as i live miles away. You must feel so proud, well done again.

    Awesome effort! Amazing what you can do when you dig deep and put your mind to it. Maybe one day we'll meet each other in a scenario that isn't one of us running past the other during a race 😆 It was a glorious day for it. I had a lovely slow amble down to Edale from my checkpoint, making sure an injured runner got down safely. The poor souls on the Lose hill checkpoint kindly stayed up there for the whole race because they were the only checkpoint who had radio contact with every other checkpoint and HQ! Definitely keen to race it one day but I did really enjoy being a part of the race organisation itself.
    The guy who came in first place finished in an absolutely ludicrous time, could barely believe what I was hearing over the radios.

      Thanks for watching Andrew. It's an amazing route isn't it, I've been a little obsessed with it since I first started walking the Peaks in my early 20s. So glad I was able to take part in this race finally, looking forward to going back again to see if I can improve on my time

    Hi. Please can you tell me how you set up your watch (I'm presuming you used a watch) to tell you how ahead/behind you were compared to your predicted time?

    An inspiring level of determination to get round. What was the time and mileage? Have just started running, locally and on flattish territory, but am aiming for trail running in a few months. Who knows, maybe this next year.

      Hi Jon, thanks for watching. There is a link in the description to my Strava map but it was around 35km with 1280m of ascent. It took me just over 5 hours to complete and I'm looking forward to going back again next time to see if I can improve on that. I hope you have a great time when you head out on the trails, I always thought I needed to wait to get to a certain level of fitness before I could tackle the hills. I decided to just go for it and learn/improve my fitness along the way, so glad I did. Best thing about trail running is you're allowed to walk the hills 🤣

      @@DeanRead that's a pretty epic achievement all in all. Certainly a line in the sand for you to break next year!. Yep, maybe jumping straight onto the trail is the way to go. I've hiked every inch of the dark peak over the last few years, and now need a new challenge and running seems like a natural progression. Can't wait to see what can be achieved, especially now the weather's improving. Do you use Strava now for navigating and tracking? I was a long time Viewranger user, and was sad to see it go, and am not all that impressed with its replacement, Outdooractive.

    • @DeanRead
      @DeanRead  Před 2 lety

      I was sad to see Viewranger go, like you say, outdooractive is ok but nothing like VR. I've just been using OA to access my Ordnance Survey maps and using Garmin Explore to plot routes as I have a Fenix 6 watch.

    • @DeanRead
      @DeanRead  Před 2 lety

      I've ran that before but not as a race. I was spectating when the winter version of the Spine Race took place this year, the Marsden to Edale race was heading south as the Spine crew were heading north. The weather was atrocious 🤣 I'd definitely so it if it was a summer race 👍
