Faceting a helenite gemstone.

In this video i cut and polish a piece of helenite volcanic ash gem material. This comes from mt st. helens volcanic ash after the eruption of the volcano in 1980. Different additives can give the material different colors. The one i used is the green variety. Thanks to john c for sending the material. Helenite cuts and polishes easily, i used a darkside lap and cerium oxide to polish it.

Im cutting opal in this video. This piece of welo ethiopian opal is transparent enough to facet. This material is hydrophane which means it can absorb water. Its did absorb some water but dried out fairly quickly once i was finished cutting. During cutting the colors can disappear and the stone turns opaque due to the water getting on and in it. What type of faceting machine(s) do you prefer to work on? I’m just beginning to think about trying gem cutting, so I’m trying to learn about the various faceting machines out there. There seems to be a lot of manufacturers, but (except for the ultra-cheap Chinese ones) they’re all VERY expensive.

May I ask why you used the wheel at such a large size? Most experts would suggest using the cutter to trim to as close to the outline as possible then dop and use the wheel?

@@tennpikr74 hell 375 isnt half bad, you did a good job with this one. i am just learning how to facet, i have a diy facet machine that i made from a treadmill and i been practicing using marbles instead of actual stones. needless to say i aint nowhere near as good as you are lol.
