Faceting an amber gemstone.

- In this video i tackle one of my toughest cutting challenges yet. Amber can be a beautiful gemstone, its main drawback is its softness - 2.5 on the MOHS hardness scale, still with care it can be worn as earrings, necklaces or maybe even a ring for the brave owners. Amber is fossilized tree sap and sometimes has insects encapsulated within.
The piece im using for this gem has no inclusions and is a lighter color than some . Care must be used in the dopping process as amber is heat sensitive so cold dopping only. I ended up using epoxy for the inital dopping after trying water soluble white glue which didnt hold. On the dop transfer i sed the white glue which worked well.
A fine lap is a must for cutting and i used a 3000 lap for cutting.
I tried to polish the gemstone using diamond in 60k, 100k , each one wasnt proper but i left the pavillion at 100k . The crown wasnt polished , i left the 3000 grit finish as the final polish.
If you cut amber be prepared for your laps to load up and slow down its cutting speed and get bumpy. This does seem to help leave a polished look i found.

Thank You for letting me be Your pretend Apprentice. I've yet to grind my first stone. Thank You for Your guidance. Donna Chassie
Great, im glad to have helped.
I raise my hand and ask, 'My quill doesn't proved an index pin hole or any flat spot, for indexing. I may put a quarter inch drill stop, at the end of the quill, on the brass dop rod.I'll divide the drill stop in half and scrib it. Then, when I use the xfer jig, I can have a lower mark, for index. What do You think. I bet there's a better way. Donna Chassie@@tennpikr74
Amazing! Good thinking!!!
Thank you Sir for sharing. Amber is my favorite gem.
Great Job, Brent!!! That was a really nice piece of rough, and your light-handed approach to cutting it worked very well. That's way out of my league. Thanks for sharing. 😍
Thanks john , a very light touch is definately neccessary. The dopping process was the biggest obstacle for me followed by the polish.
Just unbelievable. Awesome Brent.
Thanks tam.
Awesome job!

Complimenti molto bella!

Thank you.
Thanks. I have never considered faceting Amber due to its softness.
Thanks ricky.
fico fascinado pelo seu trabalho que JEOVÁ DEUS lhe abençoe.
Obrigado amigo.
All of your stones are so beautiful. Where do you get your settings? Are you a silversmith or do you use semi mounts? In other words how do you source your settings? Thank you.
Thanks very much, ive been casting the rings , the small mountings are semi mount and usually pre notched. Ive gotten most of the mountings from rio grande but tripps also has them .
Great cutting and helpful hints. How do you think you could mount it as it is so soft ?
Maybe some kind of mount with plastic prongs. Thanks.

also a personal tip you need to polish them with rubber
Thanks, i know it been done with a wax polishing lap but ive never seen one for sale, i believe most faceters made their own for these soft gemstones.
