  • This video demonstrates how a faceted gemstone is cut and polished. The design is a square shape called the squilliant - a square brilliant .

    Id really like to see a cube made from the faceted top(crown?) of that stone...In tanzanite cut on the brown axis, so from some angles you get blue with violette refraction and others violette with blue refraction. That could be pretty f-ing spectacular for a pendant or earings made of white gold or platinum for a matt finish or polished silver for a mirror finish...or by itself just to look at...

I have a question, where do you get these larger stones from? Also, on your cerium polishing lap do you use a pre-charged lap or do you mix the oxide with water and use a acrylic lap? Thank you and Happy Faceting

      hello, i usually find the large stones at local gem shows here in florida. I only made it to one this year before the lockdown. the cerium ox. polishing lap i use mostly is from the lightning lap company. I also use the thin plastic film polishing laps sometimes , they are called spectra laps, dyna laps and ultra laps .

Also I have a digital angle readout. you can 0 it at any position. So how do I initially set angle so it's reading properly.? I hope I'm asking that correctly.

    Hello Brent, I have a question for you. I am Faceting an Amethyst used a 325 grit to cut, then went to a 1200 and a 3000 to pre-polish. Now I am using a Darkside lap with Zirconium. Oxide. I noticed at the edges of my facets, tangent to the next facet my corner edge is not as sharp as it should be, it looks like very small pitted edges. I am polishing towards the girdle. Did I apply to much pressure to the lap? Or

      The other question I had was: did you have Facetron machine before you got the Ultra Tec? What is your professional opinion between either one ? Thanks

    • @tennpikr74
      @tennpikr74  Před 4 lety

      The step between the 325 and the 1200 is quite a big one, i think going to a 600 grit would have been better after the 325 lap. Its possible too much pressure causes this at times. Im having good results roughing with a 26o, cutting with a 600, then going straight to a copper lap with 8000 grit. Do you have the room to re polish with the 3000 and see if you can clean up the pitting?

      The facetrons motor has more power than the ultra tecs but maybe my utra tec had more hours on it. Both machines ive owned were at least 25 years old. The facetron dop keying system is more accurate than the utra tec. The transfer jig with the facetron is better and bigger than the ultra tecs was . The facetrons index gear is mounted at the back of the quill and stays cleaner from spray . Nice heavy metal index gears. on the facetron. The facetrons angle adjustment is easy to use.
      The things i didnt like about the facetron is the keying/ dop locking quill arraingement lets you only use facetron dops . I dont like the quick adjust mast/ head although its easy to use . The head will not tilt and stay up with stone pointing up for examining . Nice heavy metal index gears.
      The ultra tecs mast / head raising and lowering sysetm is slower but still only takes about 15 or 20 seconds to move from lower to higher angles, the mast has graduations to help for precision cutting although i dont need to use them. The head locks in the upright position and wont flop down like the facetron. The index gears are more thin, plastic. Any 1/4 . dop can be used in the ultra tec as long as it doesnt have a keying peg .The ultra tec company is interested in improvements and innovation in their product. The jarvi co. doesnt seem to be.
      Both machines are very accurate and will serve you well.
