  • This video describes the steps in the cutting and polishing of a faceted gemstone. Im going to cut 2 stones this week , one is a natural ruby while the 2nd one is a lab created chatham flux grown crystal.

Very nice video comparison, Brent. The natural ruby certainly looks much nicer.
I've only cut one natural ruby and its color was amazing, just like yours.'
Thanks much for the excellent video... as usual. Be safe my friend.

Yes, but the synthetic stone was poor quality to be fair.

Hi I'm wondering if you don't mind me asking, so I free dive in the sea for lost treasures and I've found a 4ct ruby ring which was made of rose gold. The ring itself was in bad condition from being in the sea for many years so I cut the ruby out of the ring. The ruby itself has no scratches and it glows really bright under longwave black light also I did the mirror scratch test and even used a magnifying glass to see if there's any red residue but there was no red steaks..
So is this a strong probability that my ruby is natural?

Chatham uses the extremely sophisticated flux growth techniques for growing its gems. What makes Chatham created gems so vastly superior is that their method contains ZERO water. Instead, the constituents of a natural ruby are dissolved into a powerful corrosive molten mixture called a flux. The flux dissolves the constituents of a ruby rather like water dissolving salt into a liquid vs. Melting salt in an open flame which requires FAR MORE heat. The ruby constituent chemicals are dissolved into the flux and a point of supersaturation is reached. At this point, the mixture is very slowly cooled and the supersaturated chemicals combine and begin to form tiny high quality crystals. In fact, flux grown crystals produce the most natural looking gems in the world of synthetic crystals.

So Glad you decided not to waste so much of Nat stone. 6:22 you were going to make both 6mm. Wait what? LOL. Good rough isn't cheap.
    Good job.

Thanks, yes it just didnt make sense to make both the same size. Because the syn. stone has the seed mass in the center, it really is a dull stone. So actually my comparison wasnt fair to the chatham crystal. Thanks for watching.

Here in the USA, there are clubs and organizations that teach it. Some are self taught through books and videos.
