    I love the stepped facets on the back. I feel like they add to the depth of the color you get from the stone, though they don't usually improve the brilliance like other faceting styles. Regardless, they're just so lovely.

    Excellent video and fine result.
    I agree with cutting synthetics when experimenting and first learning. My first eight cuts were done with synthetics... CZ, YAG, etc. I've even found a market for synthetic cuts... a local silversmith buys rectangular & square cuts to use when fashioning men's silver rings. I only charge him $35 to cut one if he furnishes the rough.
    Like you, I'm a big fan of the 3K Lightning Lap for pre-polish.
    I love your entire series... Thanks much!

      Thanks john, i hesitate to spend the money on natural materials as i dont know if i will be able to sell them so i end up buying the cheap stuff or synthetic. Sounds like you got a good thing going with the jeweler. Im soon going to get a lightning lap 600 grit and see how i like it for normal cutting . I have recently bought a lightning lap 1200 and really like it .
      Take care and happy faceting.

      @@tennpikr74 On my last order from Lightning Lap, I ordered 1200 just to compliment the 3K for pre-polishing. I cut a lot of Oregon Sunstones, and the 1200 works as well as the 3K for pre-polish prior to Cerium Oxide polishing.

    how do you ensure that the gem is centered on the dop?

    • @tennpikr74
      @tennpikr74  Před 5 lety

      When i start out , the rough stone doesnt have to be perfectly centered .As i cut the stone it becomes centered and once i do the transfer to the 2nd dop stick using the fixture it stays centered so i can cut the top (crown) of the stone and it will be centered also.

      @@tennpikr74 try this....cut to the zero as usual but then on the second time around on all the same facets cut to zero with almost no pressure and end the cut in the same place on the lap...if you notice that when you approach zero you can push hard and get there sooner ...that is the flex in the system and that the facetron is more of a soft stop at that zero
