Nice job, I live in Tasmania (island state of Australia) in regards to Shane K, we actually call topaz Killicrankie Diamonds (Killicrankie is a place) as the Topaz has no impurities and have been mistaken and sold as diamonds in the past, it is a beautiful stone that I love to cut.

You might have had subsurface damage from a coarse lap such as a 180 or 260 lap that you used prior to the 600 or 1200.
