Was Apple Newton’s Handwriting Recognition Better Than the reMarkable?
The Apple Newton was often mocked for its early handwriting recognition software in the 1990s. After only 5 years in the market, Apple decided to discontinue the device. How does the final version of Newton from 1997 stack up against the fantastic reMarkable 2 paper tablet in 2024? ARTICLE VERSION: www.amigalove.com/viewtopic.php?t=2732

Loved the Newton. Really want a remarkable but the price and cloud based subscription is really off putting. Hopefully these companies that keep pushing paid for cloud stuff that simply doesn’t need to cost anything will figure this out before they falter completely.
Good news is the cloud service isn't a requirement. If you happen to have Google Drive or Dropbox you can integrate those services. But if you only want to use the tablet on its own, it does 95% of what you'd want (minus handwriting recognition or syncing) as it is. If you just want a top-shelf e-ink based paper notebook, I'd highly recommend getting a gen 1 reMarkable off Ebay. Good place to start. And with 8GB memory, you're not likely to run out of space any time soon just from your digital notebooks.
A friend of mine had a brand new Newton back in the day and it was awesome. reMarkable is just an eInk slab with a few features but is also extremely limited. It has a lot of marketing behind it and I'd still never buy one, especially at the price point they're asking. My Samsung Galaxy S6 Lite w/ stylus + OneNote can do more than a crappy reMarkable, plus SO much more (and in color).
Superb (did I spell that right?) video! Now Im all over looking for newton for my "modest" MAC LCII! Super good quality and thought out video! excellente...
Thanks so much, Michael! If you do grab a Newton, keep an eye out for the final models, either the MessagePad 2000 or 2100. Those were the chefs kiss best ones made right before they pulled the plug. They provide the most options to explore, too. You'll also need to track down a cable converter if the one you eventually get doesn't come with one. It's that weird boxy adapter I show in the video when I use the physical keyboard.
Well done!
Thanks so much, Markus. Glad you enjoyed it! Has been a passion project of mine for a while. Glad to get it out!
@@AmigaLove It´s really appreciated!
Psion is my Newton here ;-) As usual, a great video, thx !
The Psion is *gorgeous* - really like that keyboard, too. Good to see you, Batteman!
I had a Newton in late 90s I got for free off a neighbour who a Lawyer and a Judge who took the Windows pill (got a PowerBook 5300 off him too). Anyway I used it a lot and spent a lot of time getting Newton to recognise my handwriting. Anyway, flash forward decades later and I buy an iPad and an Apple Pencil… it is true that we still haven’t gotten back to the ability of the Newton. Apple really sold the Newton poorly, they did what they always did and over sold it, what they needed to do was market it properly set expectations correctly
100%. I feel that they should have attempted to sell the device for less to get it into the hands of more customers, and the real reactions would have blunted the early criticism. By 1997 and os 2.0 the software was *fantastic* and far less cumbersome and unintuitive than Graffiti. But the true power of Palm was its better price point. Ironically, some of the excellent engineers at Palm (esp the software side) and Newton ultimately helped build the road to Apple's rebirth, and the iMac. Weird how things turn out sometimes.

If the new blingboard64 by Jim Drew hits the final stretch goal, it is apparently going to be able to be used with C128's and well as the SX-64. Mechanical keyboards for the c128 might happen... in 2024!
A wonderful and giant icon! ❤
THE SECRET OF MONKEY ISLAND is still one of my favorite games. Loved this video, as it brought to things together that I love. Amiga gaming and roguelikes. I grew up with an Amiga 500+, but wasn‘t playing or knowing any roguelikes back in day. Currently (at the age of 42) I‘m a mobile-only gamer, since this fits best into my life. And traditional roguelikes are by far my favorite games. And switching between Nethack (the complexity of situations and options is absolutely mindblowing to this day), Moria (basically all I want from an RPG, but yes, crazy long and grindy) and Rogue, I find myself playing Rogue (as the fantastic Rogue Touch on iOS) the most. And it‘s kind of crazy that to me those games are still peak video gaming. Thanks again for this wonderful video.
Thanks for you comment, @silentrocco. Have you ever tried out Larn? That's probably my 2nd favorite behind Rogue. There are even very good versions you can play in the browser (honestly, slightly enhanced over the original Amiga version). There's even a small FB Group that still chats about it, discusses tactics, etc.

Geos128 was a tremendous upgrade over the original GEOS 1.0. I unfortunately had the flat C128 (I got mine before the C128D/DCR were announced) so I had the 16K VDC RAM rather than 64GB VDC RAM.
So I have just got hold of an original rejuvenator board, interestingly it doesn’t have the expert services rejuvenator logo on the board
I'd love to see a photo to make a comparison of the 2 OG boards I've owned to look for any other differences.

No, the game is too large to fit on a floppy.

TY for the GREAT retro Commodore content! I see exactly at 8 min into the video your 7 mint looking Infocom Grey box's and also your Wishbringer in Solid Gold version. They only made 6 Solid Gold games and I had 4 of them and I was missing Wishbringer and the Solid Gold Triple Pack. I found a Solid Gold Wishbringer a week ago and it should be here any day now. I have never seen the Solid Gold Triple Pack (Leather Goddesses, HHGTTG and Zork I) listed but will always be looking for it so the I can own all 6 Solid Gold games. I was able to find Deadline in a Grey Box two months ago, so I now have all the games that had a Grey Box version now in a Grey box version. I have GEOS128v2 and use UII+ with a boot image for fast startups into GEOS. Can I use Gateway even thought I don't have and CMD drives? My setup is C128DCR, a 2nd 1571, a 1581 and a UII+. OMG now I want CMD FD-2000! I thought it was just a 1581 drive after Commodore stopped making them. Man, I was so WRONG! TY for teaching me about the CMD FD-2000. I like how you said, "If I ever find a Super CPU", well you are now halfway there with the Super CPU MMU. GREAT video! TY again!
Gateway doen't require CMD drives. CMD drives just give you a lot more bang for the buck since you can use the CMD native format. Funny: I actually do own a SuperCPU now (got it for 750) but it is a SuperCPU for C64-only. In theory I could possibly swap out the ROMs and add the MMU so I could use it with my C128D, but I've not gone down that road.... ;)
Been over a year and just rewatched this video because it came up in my YT feed. I see your "Don't Panic" button from Infocoms HGTTG which I must of missed the 1st time I watched this.
Haha! Yes - I use that button in a ton of my shots. Just briefly scroll my instagram feed and you'll see it multiple times. Sometimes it is well hidden, or in dark shadow, or on its side, but it is often there. =) instagram.com/amigal0ve/
@@AmigaLove I use X, FB retro groups, TT and YT. I do have an instagram account that my stepdaughter set up for me around 2 years ago if I had to guess. It’s nice to see the 1351 mouse working in 80-col mode. I can’t get that to happen here - I have the mouse driver placed first on the disk, the mouse works in 40-col mode, but when I switch to 80-col mode, no pointer appears. The next time I start up, it’s frozen - unless I start in 40-col mode. Re-writing the disk gets it working in 80-col mode, but only with the joystick
How utterly bizarre. I've never run across that issue before. When you flip to 80 column mode and press C= key + "i" does it show the 1351 mouse in the list for you to select and use?
@@AmigaLoveyes - if running with a joystick in 80-col mode, I can use C=+I to select the mouse driver. Or I can use the joystick to place the mouse driver first on the disk and restart. But either way, the mouse pointer disappears and no further input is possible, not even pressing C=+I again. It will, however, restart in 40-col mode and the mouse will work there, but 80-col mode will not start again until the disk is re-written. Frustrating indeed :)
@@AmigaLove I’ve just found it. Intermittent RAM fault in the ‘high’ bank, I guess the loading of the mouse driver must be just the point when the memory has ‘filled up’ to that faulty part! Replacing one chip solved it, but it’s not the first RAM problem I’ve had in this particular machine (and I’ve replaced all the other RAM as a precaution). One of the problems was actually some bits of the data bus being pulled down by failed ROMs. All the ROMs are EPROMs now
@@alexshepherdcongrats on figuring it out!
I've been going through episodes of the Computer Chronicles in order recently, and was quite disappointed when they got to a dedicated "portables" episode in 1985, and of course this was nowhere to be seen. I"m pretty sure I've seen it on that show at some point, maybe just because it made it easier to show off something without setting up a whole system, but yeah... I mean it's said at the end of every episode, this is made possible by the funding of people who are completely in the pocket of IBM, and therefore we really should not have been expecting them to truly give a fair shake to others. I'm surprised they covered the Amiga as much as they did, which wasn't much but certainly more than they covered any other inexpensive machine. They must have been getting screamed at in letters. Anyway, looks slick in black, reminds me of when I was given a VIC-20 rescued from the trash by someone who knew I was into the old stuff. Was not a fan of the white case so the first thing I did was put it in a modified 64 case, swapping over the badges, lol.
I love that show sometimes. It kind of gives me Bob Ross feels except with retro Tech instead of oil paints. They got quite a few heavy hitter future legends on that show too, which is pretty cool.
I remember this mouse pointer. I think I had it from a disk. Can't find it though.
Many years ago I got an Amiga 2000 that had this pointer as its default. Ever since then I've been drawing the same pointer on all of my Amigas. I love it. =)

I do have one BIG request. Do more videos about Amiga. Quality of Your materials are just superb.
Nice video! But you should make a video about the color to black & white converter used to get colors on your Sears Solid State tv! 😆
That's a beautiful C64c! What happened to the underside? Oh and I spotted what you did to the SX-64 at 3:14. 😉
The bottom of the underside of the 64C is just the nature of the current process with the original molds. I'm not 100% sure, but it I were to guess the plastics they use today are a different chemical composition. And for some reason some colors really show a lot of streaking from the pour and drying process. At least it isn't the top! (Although the tops do have their own issues, too, but they aren't nearly as noticeable.) As for the kernal, that OG owner actually did that for me. And... I approve!
Carrying around the SX-64 helped to condition and tone my muscles for carrying an M-60 which also weighs 23 pounds. 👍👍👍👍👍👍🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hah! I obviously have more SX-64 lifting to do.
"Are you keeping. up with Eric's collection, 'cause Eric's collection has far surpassed you ...". Lovely video as usual Eric. In the ever evolving situation of us having very similar tastes, I've finally gotten my hands on that C128D I've been after, YAY. Arrived pretty banged up by the courier, BOO!. It's salvageable so I'm getting there. Have the same. C64c case for a spares board I was given by someone in work that I managed to restore. It's my mod64, will be loaded up with all sorts of mods. One I'd dearly love it to have is a Mechboard64. I guess that's the next item to chase :)
I will never sing that song with those lyrics. Nor have I ever - I swear! >:) Congrats on the D!! Such great machines. I hope the case/keyboard wasn't damaged badly. Of course, my policy is to always have 2 of everything just in case I need a "donor" machine. But D's aren't easy to come by, I know. Where was yours made? I hope to see your mod64 some day when you're happy with it. Good times!
@AmigaLove The old 2 is 1, 1 is none mantra, I like it. I've been after a 128D for many years. Was kicking myself for not picking up a local one (incredibly rare to find) several years ago. Managed to find a good deal on eBay. Unfortunately the courier dropped it and the front panel got shunted sideways. Bent the floppy eject bar, snapped the floppy eject handle, smashed all the front panel support struts. Thankfully the machine shell and electronics all seem to be fine. Waiting on a local 3d print shop to print up some reinforcement/replacement struts for the front panel so I can put it all back together again.
I have the exact same case. Other then the minor flaws that I guess goes with using old molds or inexperience, (?) it is pretty cool. Nice vid. I always wanted an SX-64 until I actually used it and like you said the screen is not great for text. They used a regular CRT sized shadow mask so the holes are too big for the size CRT it is. The result is a pretty obvious dot pattern. This could have been oh so much better with a better quality CRT.
You are absolutely correct. In fact, when I got my SX-64 a few years ago I actually didn't know about that inherent problem and actually contacted Ray Carlsen to see if he should repair it. He soon set me straight. Everything about the machine I got is museum-quality, however the keyboard membrane is definitely on its last legs and something I need to replace. I got the new membrane but haven't installed it yet. I need to get beyond my fear!
As for the imperfections in the plastic, I assume it is due to using more modern plastics (different chemical composition) that are fire retardant, don't yellow over time, etc. It can also have to do with how they are cooled. I know that with the Mega65 cases the 1st batch were quite flimsy and it was because they were being pulled off the molds too early. In any CASE ;) I really don't know. But regardless I do very much like the SX-inspired color scheme. It's a lot sturdier than my Plexilaser. =)
@@AmigaLove LOL. You know when I first saw the SX in a store I was in awe at the screen and the whole portable deal. Of course I was a freshman in high school so my eyes were a little better then they are today. haha
Wow, I’m impressed you actually saw one in a store! I never saw one in the stores I went to back then.
Nice. I like that motherboard.
Do you have one as well? It's been great for years, but ever since the latest firmware enabling the Wifi I absolutely love it. Being able to search, mount and run literally any C= software ever made (and stored online) over WiFi (and copy it locally if I want to) is next-level.
This was more or less exactly the rig I had back that days. Geos was AFAIR the only software that took use of the RAM expansion. I had the smaller one and upgraded it to 512 K by soldering. Two more differences: My monitor was called 1901. I assume that was the European version. Also I put in a turbo button. There was a jumper on the mainboard, to switch from European power frequency to US power frequency. The computer was then 10-20% faster. The VIC did not like that, but the high resolution mode of the c128 did not use the VIC. To sad this did not make it through time.
Clee? My friends and I from the Netherlands all called it the C L I (see el eye). Was Clee the usual pronunciation in the US?
Hi. If there a common machine to interface old and new. Currently for Apple equipment i have ibook G4 and macbook core 2 duo and Imac core2duo, all 3 getting old but still used at times. A year has passed since the publication of this video and as I heard the C64 core compatibility is quite good now.
This is true! I just updated the C64 core a month ago and it is vastly better (not the built-in C64 mode, but the extra core as you say). The machine now has IEC support so we can hook up external drives/etc and not depend entirely on the SD card or internal 3.5" drive. It's getting much more solid as a C64 clone. Granted, if you have an Ultimate64 the Mega is redundant (and not as capable) but it is super cool to see how far it has come in a year... There is a small but very dedicated team continuing to push features forward.
For me sometimes glitchching amidock 45.14, if i press left mouse button when click on top of screen in hotbar menu in classic workbench in emulator by pressing left click button of mouse then mouse just frezz, but emulator still working and clock ( clock apps with time also continue work, but mouse cirsor just freez ), and when try change on hotbar menu of workbench or amidock, 50 on 50... btw, in emulator , in ClassicWB_OS39_v28 version, i do not know why... In Amiga OS 3.9 all fine...
