  • I was asked to join the beta testing team for the brand new C64 game Hired Sword 2 by Doublesided Games. I decided to use a mix of old and modern hardware. In this video I walk you through my setup. Lots of fun C= pron to be seen.

    Excellent look at your hardware! For my preview the other week I recorded it from a 64C with a SD2IEC, but for my Beta testing I use my C128D and my SD2IEC. She has an 8/9 toggle switch for the onboard 1571 drive. I use that for my drive 9 saves.
    It works flawlessly from a pi1541 drive, too - with the caveat that it has to boot from Device 8.

      That's awesome. I have a switch on my 128D as well so my 71 can be 9, but Iopted for the C64 because my 128D uses my 1902A. The 1902A, which is a great monitor, pales in comparison to the 1702 in terms of color and vibrance. I've tested multiple 1902A's and they are all they same - it's just the way they were made. And the colors are just a shadow of what they could be. I wanted to see the game in the best light (and not swap monitors) so the C64/1541Ultimate/1702 was an easy choice for me this time around.

      @@AmigaLove no doubt that the 1702 is a beautiful monitor. It looked great on your screen!

    Interesting. I have the same joystick and same double fire issue with HS2. Great video. Thanks!

      Yeah, it's weird. I feel like with some other games - especially action games like Montezuma's Revenge or L'Abbaye des Morts - where every action counts - I don't see that issue. But with the menu driven system it was becoming a problem. Almost like it needed more of a delay inserted or something. Regardless once I moved over to the new gamepad, it was smooth sailing from that point on. Love that game!

      @@AmigaLove I may look into that pad. I suppose I should try other sticks too (I think I have two or three other kinds here) and see how that fares. I'm trying so hard not. to. get. more. stuff.

      @@JWalterHawkes lol yeah good luck with not getting more stuff. Think of it as a game of Tetris. You can't get a bigger screen (house) so you just stack the things inside it this way and that more and more intricately over time. Just don't try and pull that box there at the bottom! ;)

    Very nice collection of hardware you use here. I have the same reloaded motherboard with original chips on the board in one of my systems. The PLA is new though and the SID is a FPGA sid. :) Of course I have the 1541 Ultimate cartridge too. Great unit and a must if you want to test .D64 images quickly. I got one with a USB port that allows me to hook up a USB stick -> this makes testing software even easier! Also have that new double action button gamepad out of Florida. The only things I don't have is the 1702 monitor (still a holy grail for me) and the 1581 diskdrive :)

      I have the ii+ as well, and you're right - even easier for a case like mine here. 100%. Thanks for watching!

      @@AmigaLove I don't know if you were aware, but the Ultimate II+ can emulate 2 drives with different device numbers, but of course you'd be missing out on the sweet sweet authentic floppy disk action and noises. :)

      @@LeftoverBeefcake I was not aware of this firmware advancement until today, which someone pointed out to me while I stared at my screen in amazement (it's hard to keep up on all the firmware when we aren't sent email notifications about every this and that). But yeah - I actually really like using my 1541-II again, too. So, it's win-win-win said really fast in a blurry circle. Awesome times! Thanks so much for watching.

      Out of curiosity, does the II+'s ability to use 2 drives trickle down to the II? I'm really partial to the II even though from a practical standpoint the II+ makes things easier.

    • @LeftoverBeefcake
      @LeftoverBeefcake Před 4 lety +1

      @@AmigaLove I only have the II+ so I'm not sure if the II can use the same firmware, but I hear ya about updates and that nice nostalgic feel of slipping a disk in the ol' drive and listening to the GRONK! GRONK! as those bits get read into the machine (very slooooowly without a fast loader). Love your videos, keep em coming!

  • @gklinger
    @gklinger Před 4 lety +1

    I'm confused as why you would go to all that trouble when the 1541 Ultimate supports two emulated 1541s. I have mine set up as device #8 and #9. My 1541-II is device #10 and my 1581 is device #11. It all works together nicely.

      Thanks for your comment (and for watching!). Are you using a 1541-ii or 1541-ii+? And could you tell me which firmware you're running? Thanks!

      @gklinger Před 4 lety +1

      @@AmigaLove First off, let me apologize. It was very late and I was very tired when I posted that comment and I should have been more polite and not made any assumptions. :(
      I was referring to the 1541 Ultimate II+. I owned an original 1541 Ultimate and I don't recall whether it supported dual virtual drives or not. The same may be true for the 1541 Ultimate II. I'll have to get back to you with the firmware version as my 1541U-II+ is put away while I play with the BackBit cartridge (which I highly recommend, BTW).

      @@gklinger No need to apologize. All's well. I also have a ii+ but I use it mainly with my C128D and frankly don't know it nearly as well as the original ii device. If the original ii can act as a dual drive, I'd love to learn how to do that. Someone else told me their ii+ could work as dual drives, so it makes me think I may need to update my firmware and poke around.

      @@gklinger Extremely nice of you to say that - thank you. These last two weeks have just been so mind crushing I'd kind of lost the will to produce more video content, but as I slowly pull out of this I'll be back. I've got some new ideas brewing. It seems like the more videos I make, the more I get this urge to go even deeper into really niche-y topics (probably crushing my chances of getting a larger audience, but hey - it's all about having fun, right?). Thanks again, I really appreciate it.
