Sukuna vs Mahoraga Blu Ray
MAPPA fixed it! The Sukuna vs Mahoraga Blu Ray fight adds so much to an already amazing fight. With all new animation for the Blu-Ray release, MAPPA has made changes, added more details, revamped colors, removed ghosting and dimming, added particles, and even animated over 2 more minutes of fighting animation for this epic clash. In my opinion, this cements the Sukuna vs. Mahoraga fight as one of the greatest anime battles of all time!

    I like your presentation abilities and appreciate the character chart especially. In mono dialoguing as I watched I felt that it was a lack of thematic feeling that was missed in this video. Thematic feeling, which is more importantly feeling but also the theme! The part about Canute was (ironically) very static, it didn't match breadth of how these characters were presented to us. So in terms of theme, when we finally get to the point of being introduced to the royalty, we as an audience were meant to feel that importance, be it with expectation or detractive assumption. When we meet Canute he is nothing like those of the world of Vinland Saga which turns out to be a contrast to Thorfinn but through Thors. Thors is introduced and presented as having attained a warrior's wisdom with a subtlety that always says more than he does; this video's perspective to connect that we as an audience only just start to share our reception of Thors with Thorfinn. What Thorfinn perceives of his father and why he gathers himself to this monomaniac form of self is only just ROUNDED to that he killed his father but why is it that we don't find the depth of Thors within his son? Noting about the likely audience is that as men, the feelings we're allowed to have are only few that being Happy Angry and rarely Upset (not sad). This isn't a talk about masculinity but a step in understanding HOW the audience begins to receive the content from this show. This is the exact same contrast with Canute, except while the show plays it out as a similar comparison to his father, the King, the Thors/Thorfinn contrast here is actually Canute/Canute. Canute wasn't just a child with a heavy impression, he already had a large part of understanding and the world. He's definitely more dynamic as you had on the chart, but farther apart to Thorfinn simply by experience. It's these exact measures of theme and feeling that make Vinland Saga so valuable to not just immerse in but sink into, like having a a literal presence within a simpler literature. One last note about Canute and his "transformation layer" (firstly I'd wager that most people felt the same way about his baby face stopping a drugged fighting maniac, as I did) is that even this layer of dynamic had smaller ripples within. Unlike Thorfinn, Canute was already experienced and could therefore interact with his knowledge after his character change. Similar again to the false King/Prince side story, the story uses this moment to represent the difference of not ability but character through a character... almost like a 4th wall break (mostly from how obnoxious this interaction is): Canute considers that his intended face and demeaner aren't of a build that the warrior would fight and so two personally contrasted demeaners met here. It's a small and short scene but it's the first display of Canute's intention that he later expands upon in that scene's dialogue. He's similar to characters like Kurapika imo. I think it's also valuable to consider that if this show did not start with and kill Thors, Askellad would not have been as appealing.

    There is absolutely no way you just said conditioning in a fight is a new concept here.. Sasuke vs Danzo, Luffy vs Katakuri.... basically any fight where one combatant has an abstract, hard to figure out ability. most of Hxh.... I see what you're saying though. It takes a very literal form here. great video btw.

    • @DrewMalou
      @DrewMalou Před dnem

      Haha, yes, I meant it in the literal sense! I would consider fighters figuring out what their opponent's abilities are as something entirely different (like Sasuke vs Danzo). But in terms of mind games and making enemies second guess whether or not fighters will or won't use their moves, I think that's far more rare. One example I thought of outside of this fight was from JJK season 1 where Todo and Itadori fight Hanami. Those Boogie-Woogie teleportation claps were great for mind games. Todo could teleport Itadori, Hanami, non-organic objects, or even choose not to teleport anything and just clap, lol. Those mind-games were more what I was referring to, and I couldn't think of very many examples. But yeah, I should have clarified that a little more, for sure. Thank you, and thanks for the feedback!

    In my opinion, western animation is better because it has better writing. Sometimes when I watch anime I just can’t tell what’s going on till one of characters explains what’s going on through dialogue. Just my opinion. Also, western animation feels more like an actual television show or movie. It’s made more for you to watch it than walk off once it’s done like “wow what a great movie”. Eastern tries more to make you feel like your inside of the world in which your show takes place in by giving you observations on the surrounding environment trying to get you emotionally tied to it, almost like rewriting reality into a fictional world. Western animation is animation over art Eastern animation is art over animation In general, western animation has smoother animation but less appealing art while Japanese anime is usually the opposite. So yeah US animates while Japan tries to be visual appealing. Oh and the icing on the cake, western animation in general has much more fun characters that can vary from animal humanoids to actual animals or to funny looking people. Anime just usually stays with the human style only changing hair color and size lol. But yeah I also love eastern animation so much it has so much talent put into it. 🇺🇸🤝🇯🇵

    • @DrewMalou
      @DrewMalou Před dnem

      These are great observations! Animation over Art vs. Art over Animation is a really interesting way of thinking about both mediums. Thanks for sharing, I've wanted to make a follow up video for this subject for a while, and I might end up using this comment in the video. And yeah, I totally love both Western and Eastern animation! Thank you for the comment, and for sharing your thoughts!

    No one cares about appreciation if people don't pay. Be honest, do you still buy blu ray? Would you stick to Crunchyroll if it suddenly became 200 % more expensive? Would you stop pirating because of this video? For 99 % the answer is no. So let us ditch the hypocrisy - all of us - and stop complaining about anime becoming worse or good anime having terrible working conditions.

    • @DrewMalou
      @DrewMalou Před dnem

      Perhaps you weren't referring to me, but I wanted to share my thoughts anyways. I bought JJK's S2E17 blu ray when it came out. I also don't watch shows illegally unless no one carries that show's particular streaming license anymore and it's not available on any streaming service. In this regard, I consider piracy to be a very important and beneficial option for preserving animation history and providing availability for shows that might not see the light of day anymore. I feel that I'm definitely putting my money where my mouth is, and resent the notion that I am being hypocritical. I think it is very important to support the art and artists that you love and their work that you consume. That's the whole reason why I make videos like this one, that highlight the poor working conditions, because I care about this industry and art form.

    Actually the very impact frames, while being pretty mediocore have their roots in western comics, like you know those old "POW" "SHAZAM!!!" things in dc comics. That would eventually find its way in like the old batman and robin shows then over time other people started doing it then it became ike really cool, so while those cant really be attributed for how cool they are today, those are the orgins.

    • @DrewMalou
      @DrewMalou Před 15 dny

      Thanks for your comment, but what you are talking about is actually categorized as something different. They are called "onomatopoeia" and while they serve a similar purpose, they aren't technically impact frames. You could make the argument that they influenced impact frames, but that line of thinking loses steam when you realize that Popeye, and Tom and Jerry had impact frames in their animation, which preceded the early Batman shows (live action and animated). I'm going to make a follow up video on this topic at some point, so I should definitely talk about and explore the use of onomatopoeia! Thanks for watching!

    Finally got time to watch this and oh boy did you suffer for not including “season 1” in the title. I enjoyed listening to your takes and I can understand where you’re coming from especially with Canute, but I think the title killed a lot of the good discussion that this video could have had. Which is a bummer considering how reasonable and respectful your criticisms were.

    • @DrewMalou
      @DrewMalou Před 15 dny

      Haha, thanks for watching it! And I honestly don't think changing the title would help. I stated VERY clearly at the beginning what I was setting out to discuss and review, and most people still reacted with the knee jerk and didn't give it a chance, lol. I don't think that it would help in this scenario, but maybe I'm wrong. Thanks for giving it a shot, and at least I now have the opportunity to make a follow up video once I get through season 2!

    • @DrewMalou
      @DrewMalou Před 15 dny

      Well, apparently it was "30% of the artistic vision" that was completed, but that guy also deleted that tweet. So, most people were guestimating that the episode was 75-85% complete.... But anyways, I still think it's an insane accomplishment for those animators. Thank you for watching!

    Violet Evergarden's first battle scene has much better sound effects than anything in here.

    • @hexcodeff6624

      I think most of these are very overdesigned. Some work well with their simplicity. A clanging of two swords filling the room sounds much better than some energy effect that is made to cover the entire spectrum of hearable bass sounds.

    • @DrewMalou
      @DrewMalou Před 15 dny

      VE was dope, but keep in mind that you are discussing two VERY different directions in terms of sound design. It's like comparing impressionism paintings and cubism paintings. The over-designing of many of these sound effects is the exact point of them. And it definitely isn't everyone's cup of tea... I just happen to really enjoy Koyama's work, and think he is doing some of the most interesting things with sound effects in the industry right now. However, it's totally cool that you prefer a more minimalistic approach to sound design.
