  • I feel like we are in the golden age of anime, where things are as good as it's going to get. I hope it lasts, but something inside of me wonders... Has anime peaked? Or is its potential unlimited? Part of me doesn't think that this level of quality and quantity of content is sustainable moving forward. I hope I'm wrong, and I hope that these shows, studios, and stories will continue to come out and reach even greater heights. These are what I feel are going to be the top anime in 2022 and 2023. Grab a sneak peak as I show you the studios and shows that I am most excited about in the coming few years.

There’s so many interesting angles that can be taken for these shows. The ideas that come to mind right now would be:
-Music/sound design/tone for made in abyss. I thought it really amplified the mystery and intrigue, horror and brutality, curiosity and exploration throughout the show.
-For Vinland Saga would be interesting to explore Askeladd and the idea of a compelling antagonist who’s motive you can understand and that isn’t just evil. Princess Mononoke did this really well.
-Mob Psycho in general would just be an incredible topic. It’s a great take on the “OP protagonist” trope. Past trauma, shutting himself off from emotion so that he doesn’t hurt others and its effect on him, his commitment to self improvement. Also just Reigen

Yeah, these are all great topics! You're right, there are definitely a ton of angles to choose from. I like that approach for Made in Abyss, and for Vinland Saga. So much material to discuss. Thanks for the suggestions! 😄

An amazing time for animation (in general) is about to drop on us in the coming years. Way better than what we have right now. Right now is the time of expensive shows and big studios. But when animation becomes more accessible to small indie studios without the loss of quality, simply because the grind of animating frame by frame will be delegated to an Ai, we'll get so many projects and so many shows that, just to stand out, artists would have to try so much harder in terms of vision. There will be more entirely original projects and the top layer quality will become much-much higher. Just remember my words. If we get to live that long it will be great.

    • @DrewMalou
      @DrewMalou  Před rokem +8

You know, I hadn't considered AI in terms of lightening the production load by just doing in betweens or something like that. That would be interesting to see. I hope we get some truly amazing stories, and you're right, I hope we'll still be around to see it!

@@DrewMalou Just wasn't in the mood to watch it, really :P
I was putting it off basically for two reasons:
      1. it can't possibly be as good as people say
      2. I am already a fan of so many things, so if it _does_ turn out to be that good, I won't have enough energy in me to be a fan for it, too
I was afraid of #2 because that's exactly what happened not too long ago with Jojo :P
Hyped up for a very long time (for different reasons), very appealing to me from what I hear, literally everyone is talking about it, etc.
#1 _somehow_ failed. It really was that good.
      But yeah, #2 came through.
I've been watching reaction channels reacting to the show since the day after I finished Final season part 1 (latest at the time), and I'm doing the same even now.
I _literally_ switched over from a video of Omariorpg watching Season 4 Ep 8.
I've watched his reactions since season 2, and he's not the only one by any means.
So many reactions, so many memes, so many video essays (like yours :D), so much fanmade content.
It's safe to say, my feed has permanently been transformed to include a bit of Attack on Titan.
Nothing wrong with that, of course, it just means I have less attention to pay to other things 🤷

The Demon Slayer vs American comics isn't much of a comparison. The American Comic Industry has been in a decline since the early 2000s. I don't think any a single issue has sold anywhere close to 100,000 units. I can easily see a volume of Demon Slayer surpass all of American comics.

As always, the montage is amazing. And all of the video concepts look very interesting.
When it comes to AOT, I think both studios have something in common. They get better in the art in time. The 3rd season of Wit was dashing and speaking as an illustrator, the proportions, and outlines were way better than season 1 even if it was great from the start. First Final season from Mappa was disappointing... the artstyle only worked for a couple of characters and the rest looked all the same in the face with just different hair. The facial features were all like thick-cut (as we say in my language) and the CGI even in the living characters (like the kids) was really disturbing.
BUT! Mappa only did what they could within the time they had and, dear lord, the second final season was ASTONISHING! The art style improved, the titans, the battles, the blood, the movement in the action scenes, everything was fantastic! And the faces that troubled me in the previous season, were obviously polished and perfected! And this is also why I am not mad for getting a third final season. I prefer to get something as good and have one more epic season done properly than rush the studio for ending it faster with questionable results and also cost the animators' health.

Honestly, all of these ideas sound like amazing videos, and I’d watch any of them, since your style is too good to miss a single upload, but the one I have the biggest stake in would be AoT, as I’d love to hear your thoughts on it all, whether they be about the switch in animation studios or the overall story, so I’d be ecstatic to see a video about the final season of AoT from you! As for the anime that are coming up, I’m also very excited for Chainsaw Man, as I’ve heard nothing but great things about the manga, so I want to see what all the hype is about! I’m also very excited for Tower of God S2, as I recently read the WEBTOON, and while I didn’t love it at first, I came to really appreciate it, and S2 has some incredible arcs, which I’m very curious to see how they get animated! I also want to read Solo Leveling before the anime comes out, as I love to experience the source material first so that I can compare the adaptation to where the story first debuted! Do like to go in blind to adaptations or experience the source material first, my friend? Thanks for a fantastic video, as per usual!

I've heard a lot of buzz surrounding Chainsaw Man (pun fully intended, lol) so I'm looking forward to that as well. Haven't read/watched ToG or Solo Leveling, but I want to get into them! And to answer your question: if it's a traditional book that gets a film adaptation, I like to read the book first. When it comes to animation, I almost always prefer to watch the anime. I read very little manga. I should probably change that, though, haha. And thanks for the kind words, as always, and thank you for watching!

@@DrewMalou Oh yes, that's what I'm talking about! For sure, I figured you'd want to wait until it's done, as I think it would make the most sense to have the whole story to work from, in terms of making videos. Whenever those videos come out, I'll be extra excited to see them! Haha, I love a good pun, and that one rips (not as good of a pun, but that's what I came up with on the fly haha)! At least from the manwha side of things, ToG's first season is a bit rough on the art, but it gets much better as it goes on. I've heard the anime is good, especially the soundtrack, which was done by Kevin Penkin, who also did the Made in Abyss soundtrack! Yeah, I also prefer to read the book first, as I love reading and getting to experience a world that way has been something I've loved since I was a kid! I also have read very little manga, and it's only recently that I've really gotten into it, with Gantz and Black Clover being the manga I read because I needed to see how their stories continued after their anime ended (for Gantz, it's over, and BC will come back someday, but no one knows when). I have never read a manga before watching an anime, but I aim to change that with Kaiju No. 8, as it seems very interesting and I've wanted to check it out. For me, manga was a bit hard to get into, since I love American comics, and I'm used to colored pages, but I got used to it pretty quickly. You're welcome, thanks for your reply, as usual, and I hope you have a great rest of your weekend!

Yeah, I definitely want to wait until AoT is finished, before I make any remarks on it. I'm already super hyped for it, haha. And I totally lol'd at your pun. 😂 So that tells you about my sense of humor, haha. Yeah, the first manga I read was A Silent Voice because I wanted to experience the source material. I'll probably do that for AoT at some point. And I didn't know they stopped BC. Are they waiting for more issues of the manga to come out before they adapt it into anime? And I haven't heard of Kaiju no. 8, but I'll try to check it out. And yeah, I feel you about American comic books. Thank you so much, I had a great weekend, I hope yours was awesome too!

@@DrewMalou Yeah, I feel the same! I actually just heard the full version of SiM's The Rumbling, which I'd only heard in the portion that was the intro for the Final Season Part 2, and it got me even more hyped for the finale than I was before! Hey, puns are great, especially when cleverly done, so I'm glad we share a love for puns haha! Ah, that makes sense: your love for A Silent Voice showed through in your video on it, so it makes sense that you read the manga for it; my love of BC was why I wanted to read the manga after the anime stopped, since I adored the world and just had to see how the story continued from where the anime stopped! I think I'll also read AoT once I see how the anime ends, as I've heard amazing things about that manga, of course. Yup, that's exactly it about BC: the people behind the anime were too close to the manga, and they didn't want to do fillers (since BC had pretty much avoided fillers before that point), so they wanted to wait and pick up the anime at some later point when there's a bit more space between where the manga and anime are. What I've heard about Kaiju No. 8 piqued my interest: essentially, it's about a world where kaiju have I guess been enough of a threat that there's an organization dedicated to stopping them, which the main character and his best friend both join. However, the MC somehow makes some sort of contact with what I gather is a different kaiju, and so he's able to go between his human form and this kaiju that he bonded with, and he fights hostile kaiju, but he has to contend with his best friend, who's now the head of the anti-kaiju agency and doesn't know that her best friend is this mysterious new kaiju. It sounds like an interesting premise, and I think people have liked it, so I want to check it out! Thanks for reading this even longer than usual message haha, and I hope you've been having a good week thus far!

A topic I feel needs to be discussed more terms of animation series/manga-comics is the idea of onoboardning onto a series, here is what I mean:
onboardning means how much content a new viwer is expected to read/watch to catch up to the latest release in a story or how long it will take to conclude a piece of media and it can be broken in 3 areas: #1 series backlog, #2 generational differences for later chapters/older works being brought back and #3 why people offboard/drop a series
#1onbarding backlog on the topic of demon slayer I think is because its easy to onboard, their is alot of hype and it has a concluded story which can be cosnumed in a rsnable period of time while alot of western comics have a convoluted system of branching stories, mini seres and side stories found in other characters mainline issues so as a foreign viewer I would rather read a streamlined ,high quality story rather than have to google which stories to get so I can get a fuller picture(yes I am aware of the infinite crisis reset its still confusing). So for alot of the stories you brought up they have a healthy backlog that people can go through encouraging a strong fanbase
#2 #2 generational differences for later chapters/older works being brought back:I I will use bleach as an example, bleach for what I have read has a good manga series, but an exhastive backlog in terms of anime,so any person who wants to join the hype train for the new series conclusion will either need to read the disappointing ending or slog through the anime, this is where the genrational divide begins some manga.series has aged fine eureka 7,cowboy bepop, kill la kill etc have aged fine, but for older series looking for new fans newer fans may not stick to the lder subpar animation, like even in HS outside of the final fights bleaches animation was lackluster so for a genration who grew up on AOT,MHA,DBZ,ViNLAND SAGA etc the bar has been raised,it would be tolerable if older series where shorter but alot of them has alot of episodes to go though+ filler(discussed in #3)so their may be a genreational divide in terms of qility this was best exemplifeid in the new Shaman king which looked like a polished 2008 anime in current day.
#3 why people offboard/drop a series:to expand on #1 sometimes the back catalogue is just too much eg One Piece ,by god have I tried to catch up,but man it feels like a full time job at times(i am not,not enjoying it but all I am saying that is an intimidating amount of back issues,so some series which may be good has such a huge barrier to entry in terms of backlog some people may not try reading it(I literally had to bribe a friend into giving berserk a chance after he was intimidated by the back issue amount). On the topic of backlog filler, filler is talked alot but not in terms of onboarding their are alot of shows I will not pick up/dropped because of filler eg Bleach(It was already on thin ice with its slow af story/animation) and Naruto shippuden ,its no longer 2010 were our options are limited we have multiple streaming services,manga/books are easier to read/purchase and even youtube as an altrenative to tv so I can see why if someone feels like a manga/series is wasting their time even after trying to go through its back catalogue would drop it and never pick it up again as why read one thing you dont like when you have a backlog of other premium stuff begging for your eyeballs
and their is alot more,In terms of anime/manga and general streaming I dont see enough discussion on why people stay on a series even after a long heitus and why some series even if really good are not given a chance. That is my video recommendation ,but I am honestly down with the other topics.

On the topic of "can it last" I think this is a valid feeling which isnt too far from where I think the animation industry is going.Japans current output is not sustainable, the quility bar has been raised so high that I feel like a crash is on its way I can imagine it going in 4 ways:
#1 payement and collaboration being forced to adapt to the international standard:
As anime becomes more mainstream(what is "mainstream"anymore)a reckoning is currently happening int the japanse animation industry ,alot of veterans are leaving the industry and the high technical level of 2d animation being demanded cannot be filled fast enough at their current work pay and draconian work hours required,so as anime keeps this high demand for high quility shows in full gear its eather they pay their animators more or risk major brain drain.(so possible topic does an increase in popularty/visual fidelty tranfer to btter pay/treatment)
#2 AI ,so this is speculative and can be placed under the banner of "sci-enthusasnt" but I have seen alot of advancements in terms of ai 2d animation interpolation, colouring and spacial compositing( a scary amount of it is really indistinguishable from those drawn by skilled artists).I think we are heading out of an age of large studios and into more indie/smaller teams needed for productions,as an animator its pretty scary seeing how well it can both inbetween and track arcs for different objects, but also maintain timing for objects no even in its view borders but alof factore in weight for differnt items on the fly ,this feels like magic.I never though I may live in a timeline where we could realistically get a animation that could match the visual fidelity of weathering with you made by a team of 25 or less but I am seeing alot of that happening even on youtube.(so possible topic what is the future of anime in terms of team size)
    #3 Format fatigue:
I mentioned in #1 that alot of high fidelity animation is the basic standard for a show every season, but does it need to drop weekly?as the streaming/content wars goes in full swing I dont think studios can really keep up with it,especially with the current brain drain/toxic work culture.I mean AOT/demon slayer sakuga is awesome ,but do we need it every week.I am willing to do bi weekly if it means the animators can breath.I think we are heading to a time where the schedule of weekly drops will be put in question by the industry itself as I have seen alot of shows start well but sputter and crash near then end due to their deadlines.( so do we need weekly anime as a topic that explores how the industry currently works, the good/bad of weekly episodes, the culture of weekly episodes that build hype with fans and can the industry keep up with the weekly format)
#4 animators move onto to greener pastures
As you said their are some hype shows coming out,but also alot of skill on display so if japan wont increase their pay/wont adress their toxic work culture with alot more animators burning out trying to keep the new industry standard of high technical animation I could see alot of Japanese animator leaving the industry and working for other Asian animation houses or switch towards western animation just for better pay and better work life balance.(so their is a topic "does anime deserve its animators" with notes on how other countries pay/treat their animation stuff)
I think I can boil my fear of animes' future is "why is stuff looking better, but the talent is not being treated better"if the animators are not in a good place it will effect the overall health of the industry.

even though You missed a lot of big names like bungo stray dogs, Uzumaki and mushoku tensei, which add to your argument, I still can't fully agree with you.
the reason now we are getting so many great shows, is because we are getting more shows than ever.
with the exception of 2020 which had issues due to covid, we have been getting more and more great anime every year.
to the point that If you asked me what are the best years for anime, 2 years out of the top 3 would be very recent. 2021, and 2019.
so many of these big hitter shows are here to stay for a long time. made in abyss, vinland saga, chainsaw man, mushoku tensei and so many of these are here to stay for most if not all of this decade.
so no I don't think these years can't be repeated, because with the exception of aot none of these shows are leaving.
and the mentioned aot has a really good chance of being a disappointment, for me the show hit in an all time low in terms of writing in s4 p2, and I just can't understand anyone who thinks the studio change and rushed production wasn't a massive downgrade for aots production value.
the fact that I haven't seen a single manga reader say anything good about the ending doesn't help it's case either.
there is also the fact that there are more than a few legendary mangas waiting for their adaptation.
A good adaptation of berserk, jojo part 7, vagabond, oyasumi pun pun, these can all be instant classics if they get a good adaptation.
on a last note, you had problems with character development in vinland saga?
I'm going to be honest, I don't see a world were anyone can tell the world the show praised to death and gets called a masterpiece for it's character writing has problems in that exact section. I don't know what your reasoning is, but I would rethink it. this is one the things that 99% of the world, both critics and casuals will disagree with you on.
now that doesn't guarantee that they are right, but you need to have some fully fleshed out and extremely convincing reasons to go against that and come on top. and honestly, I just don't see anyone being able to do that. not for vinland saga, and specially not in terms of characters.

    • @DrewMalou
      @DrewMalou  Před rokem

I think we are getting more anime adaptations because the market for anime keeps expanding. It feels like that expansion is going to lead to issues down the road. I believe that this is true for almost all entertainment right now. There so many shows/movies/anime to watch on so many devices/streaming services/platforms that I feel like there won't be enough funds to support everything, which will lead to an eventual collapse. But I'm not a psychic, it's just a feeling that I have that things right now are too good to last.
As for Vinland Saga, consensus opinion doesn't hold much weight in my eyes. I was surprised that everyone was raving about it, because I think it does have some pretty big flaws. As for what those flaws are, you'll have to wait for the video. Hopefully you'll take an objective look, but if you already love the show, I have doubts that I'll change your mind. And don't get me wrong, I didn't hate the show, I enjoyed the experience and the animation, but it had several things that raised some red flags for me.

@@DrewMalou i don't know how to feel about this. i feel like you're being to cautious. i mean anime getting popular has had its backslashes, but the quality of shows has been only improving because of it.
the budgets are getting higher, and the shows are getting sequels much more easily.
i think you're worrying too much.
      and on the second note
Don't worry, if there is one guy who is willing to be objective its me.
all i'm saying is that there are countless other video essays against that opinion of yours, so your reasoning needs to be extra convincing since you are going against the masses.
here's the thing. public isn't always right.
but before you can understand why public is wrong, you have to fully get why everyone else thinks that way.
if you were surprised that everyone thought highly of the character writing, there is a good chance that you may be missing something.
i have plenty of unpopular opinions myself, which i have argued many times in the internet, so trust me when i say for you to be convincing in a case like this, the first and most important step is fully understanding why people disagree with you.
so if you ever wanted to make that video, i strongly suggest reading a few positive reviews, and watching some character/story essays before it.
because keep in mind, you aren't just saying why you are right. you also need to say why everyone else is wrong, and for that you need that understanding first.
you have to go into fully getting why vinland saga gets called a masterpiece by critics and casuals alike, and then and only then.
you may be able to change peoples mind about it.
