- Today we are looking at one of my favorite villains in order to answer a question: What is it that makes a villain ominous? I think there are some things that we can learn from Amon, the main villain of the first season of The Legend of Korra. I think that there are a few things that set this villain apart from some others. Let's take a look. What do you think? Is there anything else that you can think of that would make a villain ominous? Let me know in the comments down below!
Thanks for watching everyone. I hope that you enjoy this video! It's the perfect video essay for any fan of the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender. you're forgetting one incredibly important part, character design.
A big reason certain villains feel more/less ominous than others is because while some are dark broody and mysterious, others dress like a pimp
Lololol, very true! (Looking at you, Jared Leto Joker) Haha, great point. Thanks for watching!
Considering that this is what you consider an Ominous Villain, I'd like to suggest a film that I feel has an Ominous Hero. ... I typed a whole paragraph explaining why, but no, I'd rather you just watch the film to understand. It's a 2011 film called Drive. You really have to watch it from beginning to end to understand.
Drive sounds familiar, but I don't think I've seen it. You have definitely piqued my interest though! Thanks for the recommendation, I will try to check it out soon! And thanks for watching!
One of the most foreboding villains I have ever seen is Johan Liebert from Monster. Every time he’s on screen you wonder what he will do next and what terrible things he will bring upon the characters you’ve grown attached to.
Oh man, what an awesome recommendation. Never heard of Monster, but I did a little research, and I want to watch this so bad now. Thank you! I will have to check it out, I'm a sucker for a great villain!
Man this video is sooo good. Dayum!! Not a big fan of amon but you do make valid points
Hey, thanks for the kind words, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I happen to love Amon, so I might be a little biased, haha.
@@DrewMalou i saw your video. Love the presentation. Also a huge fan of Amon. Can you also do a video of Slade from the Teen Titans show from 2003? Id love to see one.
Ohhhhhh, that's a great idea! Love Slade, from the Voice Actor down to the character design, haha. No clue when I will get to that video, but I will definitely try to make it. Thanks for watching! 😁
Finally positive Legend of Korra videos on youtube and actually analyzing its fantastic storytelling points. Love this video! great structure and thoughts! Incredibly refreshing to start the video and not hear "TLOK is a flawed show but... or it's not as good as ATLA but..". instant like for that.
Yeah! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I haven't watched much TLOK analysis type videos, but I'm sure that must get pretty old, pretty quick, haha. I'm glad you enjoyed my video! Thank you so much for watching!
Have you watched Made in Abyss, that show has one of the best omnious villians you'll ever see especially in the movie after the first season
Noooo, I haven't seen it yet! I had a friend who really wanted me to watch it, but I just haven't sat down to watch it yet. I'm super excited to go through it, now! Love me a great villain, haha. Thanks for watching!
@@DrewMalou You're in for a ride!
Yeah! That's what my friend was telling me, haha. I can't wait! Thanks for the recommendation!
@@DrewMalou You've got great content on the channel Bro, Keep it up!🔥
I'm going to assume you mean Bondrewd but allow me to humor an argument - a more ominous villain in Made in Abyss is the Abyss itself. Despite the Abyss being always present it's also unknown and unpredictable not to mention generally dangerous. The humanity one needs to lose in order to have any hopes on traversing the Abyss is a testament to its danger and insanity.
Amon is one of my favorite villains. Fun fact, he is voiced by the same voice actor as Darcia from Wolf's Rain, and Spike from Cowboy Bebop. Darcia is probably my favorite villain ever, so that added to the threat level with Amon for me. Not only that but I really felt for Korra, I was struggling in college and had to accept that just becasue people said I was smart didn't mean I was going to succeed.
Yeah, Steve Blum is awesome, and does some great work! I'll have to check out Wolf's Rain, sounds amazing. Love me a good villain, so thanks for the recommendation!
@@DrewMalou I feel similarly about Slade from teen titans and Shredder from TMNT 2003.
Yesss, Slade is a great villain! I need to watch the 2003 tmnt, heard so many good things.
@@DrewMalou I could refer to your videos, but what would you say are your favorite series for story, worldbuilding, or
cool villain?
Naruto and Bleach have some great villains and world building!
I need an analysis on why Bill Cypher is the best fictional character ever written
Haha, I will get right on that! 😂 Thank you for watching!
So, to summarize:
1) Have a tangible presence from the get-go.
2) Give them a sense of power/influence over the hero, rendering the hero in a state of helplessness.
3) Combine "What is their end goal?" and "How do they go about achieving that desire?"
Yes, essentially. That's not the only way to create an ominous character, but I thought it was pretty effective for Amon!
Though I hate how the villain died I have to agree. Its that, feeling of power. That even if the main villain gets a hold of the main characters they do nothing that, "I have a much worse plan for you" feeling that turns the plot all that more intense. Sure you can have a villain that is really bad and in the distance, but when your villain dose that..
I've done something like this with the villain I am making for my book(if it ever gets finished) and the main villain has the power like Thanos, but has this, cunning, calm personality. He shows up 4 times during the entire book including the final battle, and each one is just before the characters are ready to face him. Giving the main characters a hopeless feeling, that every time they get close he's there to foil, as if he wants to delay something. I have no idea why, or what his villain motives are but haha, thats still plot in the works ya know?
Yeah, I know what you mean! The villain in your book does sound ominous. I like it when villains don't even attack, they're just there sometimes to get into the character's heads. That's always fun! Thanks for watching. 😁
@@DrewMalou Thanks for makin enjoyable content :P
You're very welcome! Thank you for enjoying it! Haha
In terms of ominous villains, I'd suggest Nui Harime from the anime Kill la Kill. She gets introduced as an innocent loli, but some things seem a bit... off about her. The very first thing she does is stare directly into the camera, and some time later, she gets to bear witness to the protagonist, who is battling one of the antagonist's henchmen on TV. The protagonist (a girl named Ryuko) wields immense power with something called a 'Kamui'. I don't want to go too deep into the lore here, but basically, a Kamui is a piece of clothing that can transform itself, granting the wearer super human strength and durability and other stuff. There are more uniforms like this, but they're nowhere near as powerful as a Kamui (Ryuko's opponent is wearing one of those). Now the villain I was talking about earlier, Nui, sees her wearing a Kamui and being someone who manufactures this kind of clothing, she knows exactly what it is. Now, what's her reaction to it? She states: "That's so adorable!" and then proceeds to head to the arena where the fight is taking place and intervenes, saying she wants to fight Ryuko herself, despite the fact that she's not wearing a uniform of any kind, all while never dropping her smile and cutesy-loli-act. I could go further describing what happens in the episode, but then I'd be entering massive spoiler-territory. Just in case I managed to pique your interest though, this happens in episode 11 (out of 25) "I'm not your cute woman''. That is, if you've already watched Kill la Kill before, then I'm sorry for wasting your time.
I have seen Kill la Kill! But it's all good, I appreciate the in depth refresher. 😄 Haha. Thank you for sharing!
Amon was pretty foreboding, with his Protoss/Zerg hybrid and stuff
A very decent villain to be sure
I'm glad you agree! Definitely a fun guy to study. And the "Zerg" stuff, that is a perfect connection! Haha, thank you for watching!
I appreciate the snippet of Kingdom Hearts fight music. Great video, Drew!
Yeah! I'm glad you caught it! Thanks for the feedback. More videos coming soon!
"What makes a villain ominous?"
Let's ask our sponsor for today's video,Sephiroth!
Hahaha, I definitely need to make a video about him! Such a cool villain. Thanks for watching!
Random question: What do you think is scarier? Something unstoppable or something unpredictable? It doesn't have to be about villains. Or even a character. Usually these things are driving points for the audience though.
Hmmm, that's a really interesting question! 🤔 If I had to choose, I would say something unpredictable, because you never quite what is going to happen, and I think the fear of the unknown is such a powerful force for audiences. They both can be utilized really well, however. What would you consider scarier? Thanks for asking such a fascinating question!
@@DrewMalou It's a really hard choice. I don't know myself. That's one reason why I asked you.
Yeah, it definitely is a tough one! Made me sit and think for a while, haha. Need to make a video on it at some point! Lol
For example as an enemy who would you find scarier, Hisoka or Meruem. Both are formidable opponents though meruem is vastly stronger. However I would say hisoka is scarier as if meruem was you're enemy he'd attack you in the most efficient strike that would instantaneously kill you, however Hisoka would toy with you or kill you in a brutal messed up way.
All I'm saying is that hisokas unpredictability is scarier than meruems unstoppability
@@eschermcgearey4464 That's a good point. Being unpredictable is usually a psychological thing. So they have more capability of causing fear. I suppose that answers which aspect can be scarier.
Your video is so cool. You've earned my sub. I think what makes a villain ominous is the ability to render the 'hero' powerless and you summed that up perfectly as well as bringing up other points I hadn't thought of. great job.
Yeah! Thank you so much! 😄 I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you for watching, and for the kind words!
you deserve much more subs.
Thanks so much! I appreciate the kind words. 😁 I will hopefully get some more subs soon! Haha
How to make a villain ominous: Give them a creepy mask and hire Steve Blum or Ron Perlman to voice them.
Seriously, Slade in Teen Titans always freaked me out too.
Yes!!! Slade was another great and ominous villain, you're right. Haha, I should make another video! Thank you for watching!
@@DrewMalou a teen titans video of the show in general would be so appreciated!!
Ohhhhh, that's a good idea! That show was a classic. Definitely need to make a video about it at some point!
Oh wow, I can't believe this video out for about three years and is really great!
This should be really helpful how to make a character that is actually really good!
Thank you for the simple, but direct what this video is about!
You're very welcome!! Thank you so much for the kind comment. I'm glad you enjoyed this video, and found it helpful. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching! Who's your favorite villain?
Probably yoshikage kira I really like how he is written
Ohhhhhh baby!!! I'm bummed, because I have only seen like the first four episodes of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. I definitely need to get on that! I hear it referenced alllll the time, and I hate feeling like I'm missing out. Bu thank you for watching and for leaving your thoughts!
Would love to see a video on some favorites such as Meurem, Darth Maul, Hisoka or Zaheer!
Those are some great choices! I will definitely have to see what I can do. Thanks for the suggestions!
Definitely Johan Liebert from Monster
You should do a video on Zaheer
Oooohhh, that's a good idea. Definitely an interesting character worth taking a look at. Thanks for watching, and for the idea!
@@DrewMalou Also your character study is really good instead of just revising the whole plot like those other video essays. You really did teach something. ♡
That's so awesome, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for the kind words!
the way they look, the way they act, the way they speak makes the villain ominous
Yeah! Good points. Thanks for sharing!
How about villians from videgames?
Best examples: G-man (HalfLife2), Gounter o'Dim (the Witcher 3), Illusive man (Mass Effect 2).
Oooohhhh, that would make another dope video! Haha, thanks for watching, and for the great idea! There are a lot of great video game villains to study and breakdown!
Another great video! And brownie points for mentioning the Inheritance cycle😍
Yeaaaahhh! Haha, thank you so much. Looks like we got some fellow Dragon Riders in the house! 😆
OH MY GOSH YESSSSSS! legend of korra is finally getting the recognition it deserves 😭💖 i subscribed JKLFJDS;LAJDFSJ
Heyyyy, thank you so much!! Glad to have you aboard, haha. And yes, I love TLOK and ATLA and I'm sure I'll do more more videos about them in the future. Thank you for watching!
Anybody who uses conquest ablaze deserves a sub
Bahahaha, thank you so much! 😄 I appreciate it!
His death actually made me tear up
Yes! Me too. He is an incredible character, that they made sympathetic, even though he did some terrible things. Definitely one of my favorites!
I saw ur videos and get stucked for hours watching em.
Talking about villains u should watch Bungo Stray Dogs, the main villain of the last season is unique, depsite having deadly superpower he uses 100% of his brain to succeed all his plan. Makes u feel tingle and terrified when he's mentioned or involved with anything.
Thank you for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed the content! I only finished the first half of season 1 for Bungo Stray Dogs, but now I'm gonna have to go back and finish it! Haha, thanks for the recommendation, I do love me a good villain!
@@DrewMalou The author really did a great job on writing character, every single character including villains are likeable bcoz they have their own motivation and ideals.
@@DrewMalou
I would recommend to watch the OVA : Hitori Ayumu and Movie : Dead Apple after finish watching Season 2
Gotcha, thanks for the recommendation! Yeah, I remember the characters being really interesting. Looking forward to getting back into it!
"This will contain spoilers for the first season of Legend of Kora," so... the only season I've managed to watch.
Haha, it's definitely a great season! Any particular reason you never finished the other seasons?
@@DrewMalou I don't remember why I didn't watch the other seasons, but it was probably just that I couldn't find the time. It was a while ago. I should probably watch the whole show before it gets pulled off of Netflix.
Yeah, there are some great moments if you can find the time. Most people didn't like it as much as The Last Airbender, but I still think it has a lot to offer.
Thank you so much i just discoverd your channel and u give me so much information for my story to be as believable as possible
That's so awesome to hear!! I wanted my channel to be a resource for storytellers, so I'm glad you found it, and are enjoying the content! Thank you for the kind words. 😁
@@DrewMalou so much love mate
Thank you, right back at you! 😊
I think a villain like Cell is perhaps the best example of being Ominous.
Or in the case of the jungle book, Kaa the hypnotic snake is the subtle Ominous while the obvious Ominous is the tiger Sher Karn
Yooooo, didn't even think about Cell while making this!! He was a terrifying villain! Definitely need to make a video about him! The Jungle Book villains were great examples too. Thanks for watching!
Your videos made me realize i just watch the shows and i dont give time to appreciate them
Haha, sweet! I definitely love bringing more appreciation to the art form, so I'm glad that you shared that with me. Thanks for watching!
This trully helped me with my own story. Your mazing thank you!!!
You are very welcome! Thank you so much for watching!
@@DrewMalou I'm happy to say that my book is finished !!
My freida is taking his sweet Tim's with the cover, but I don't mind, I hope to be able to publish it within this year, or the next!
And I'm definitely letting you know when it happens
Good video! My only critic is that the music is a bit too loud XD
Thank you, and yes, the audio mix was not great here, but should be fixed in the more recent videos!
7:23 You see there. He got cocky. And THAT is why his plan failed. Bad guys not finishing protagonists off when they get the chance is the leading cause of them getting their butt kicked later, lol.
Yuuuup! Good point. Definitely a "pride cometh before the fall" situation, haha. Thanks for watching!
I’m gonna come back to this later since I plan on watching atla and the legend of korra but haven’t yet, but I do have one thing to say:
Hands down, one of the most menacing and terrifying villains I’ve ever seen is All for One from My Hero Academia. Just his presence alone is paralyzing,
Yes, please watch atla and tlok before this video! Good choice. Both are great shows with a lot to offer. And All For One is a great villain!!
One thing I have to point out in this analysis is how it seems like you're saying that a villain *has to be* ominous in order to be great. I know this is unintentional but it's still noticeable - just some constructive criticism from me :)
Good point! Definitely not true, but it probably is just a preference of mine, haha. Thank you for the feed back, and thanks for watching!
nice, more avatar analysis videos
Yeah! Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching!
I could use this
Go for it! 😄
Eyy i read eragon's first book and now im continueing to the others.
Yeah!!! Those books are my jam, haha. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did! Thanks for watching!
Is that the Persona 3 theme in the background at 0:45?
Yes! Good ears, haha. I believe it is a song that plays in Tartarus. Thanks for watching!
The LOL Rock 🤣
Yeah! 😂 I couldn't resist!
If you haven't seen it, pause this video and reevaluate your childhood
Lololol 😂 Pretty much! Thanks for watching!
Lmao him not taking away her bending was just cheesy as f what are you talking about.
Lololololol, nahhhhhhh, I kind of liked it! Amon has got a dramatic side, and wanted to put on a show, haha. 😂
He said why he didn't do it. If he took Korra's bending before establishing a strong military plan he would just be attacked by all the nations at once. He was ready to take on republic city but not the whole world.
Yes, exactly! It is interesting that his trying to make a spectacle of the Avatar is what helped lead to his downfall. Could have avoided all of that nonsense, but I guess pride goes before the fall.
I see Amon, I click
Haha, I'm the same way! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this beautiful video!
You are very welcome!
Gonna use this vid for reference instead of selling my kidneys going to university that teaches creative writing
Haha, yeah! I actually majored in creative writing at University. 😄 I'm happy to pass along the knowledge. If you're interested, check out Brandon Sanderson. He has a CZcams channel on here, but there is also a 10 part university course where he breaks down the writing process. He mainly approaches things for sci-fi and fantasy, but it is an incredible resource with lots of practical information for every kind of writer. I highly recommend anyone interested in writing to check it out!
@@DrewMalou Oh sweet thx so much for the info. I'll be entering university soon and majoring in computer science but I'd like to learn how to write a proper story because I would like to know how to go about it for an rpg I'm thinking about making. And for just writing in general since i'd love to publish a book.
Also thx again for sharing your knowledge because things like this are extremely helpful, especially when you aren't obligated to help so I can't express how useful the vids you make are.
Yeah, no worries! I'm glad my videos are able to help you, that's exactly what I wanted. 😄 Writing can be quite enjoyable, whether you are attempting to get published or just doing it for your own enjoyment. And best of luck as you head to university!
ok but seriously the most ominous thing IN this video BY FAR was that intro battle music what IS that?? The ending battle music is from KH right?
Yes, the outro was from Kingdom Hearts! And I believe the opening song was from Phantasy Star Online 2, but I don't remember what it's called. 😔
@@DrewMalou oh wow I would not have guessed that! It was giving me ff7 vibes haha
Yeah! It does kind of sound like that, haha. I've started putting the music I use in the description, because I forget all of the track names after some time passes.
Awesome, have u watched naruto?? Bcoz I feel in Naruto og, Orochimaru had that spine chilling prescence, he was the stuff of nightmares when he first appeared
Yes! Orochimaru was great for sure! Shippuden had a bunch of great Villains as well. Pain was one of my favorites.
@@DrewMalou Same, Pain was my fav too... his godly aura and powerful words were too good
Man, you're making me want to go back and watch the whole Pain arc again, haha! It was one of my favorite moments in any anime, ever. The buildup to his eventual arrival in Konaha and the ensuing fight were masterfully done.
@@DrewMalou Yess, it feels wonderful to find a fellow naruto fan when hating on it has bcom cool smh, it definitely had its moments

Thank you! I'm glad you liked them. All the songs used are listed in the description!
Did anyone else get a weird glitch from 2:37-2:44 where the video just went black and silent?
Sorry I'm just now getting back to you, but no, I re-watched that part and it didn't glitch out for me.
I'm late but, do you know the villian, of the anime monster, Johann? I think he has a very strong presence. ( if you don't the anime is good like rly)
Edit:Nevermind, I think johann was already mentioned lol

Oh

Hehehe
I see you are a KH FAN too. 👌
Hahaha, yes! I do love me some Kingdom Hearts! 😁
Dude, your music is *WAY* too loud. I wound up muting the video before I was even a minute in, and just read the subtitles instead. Good video, but maybe consider halving your background music audio in the future.
Thank you for the feedback! Did you listen on headphones? I mixed this on speakers, and didn't check how it sounded on headphones before rendering it out. However, the mix should be much better in the more recent videos. Thanks for suffering through it! 😅
@@DrewMalou I was listening on laptop's speakers. Admittedly, my speakers aren't super-great, but they're pretty good. You were still audible over the music, but it was very nearly as loud as your voice. Again, great video, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I took some notes for how to play Strahd in my upcoming attempt at a Ravenloft campaign.
Interesting! And its definitely the mix, I'm sure your speakers are fine, lol. I found it was much more muddled with headphones, that's why I assumed.
And what a cool way to flesh out some characters for a campaign! I've never thought about researching character traits to get ideas. I'm glad I was able to help at least a little in that regard! Are you going to be the GM?
Persona 3
Haha, yesss! 😆 Good ears. I love that game and its OST. Thanks for watching!
