  • Chainsaw Man was going to change the anime game forever. There was just one little detail I never saw coming. Denji is a HUGE simp. This little fact is the catalyst for the entire show, and in this video essay, I will break down exactly why his simping makes the show work.
    Whether it was his blindly following Makima’s orders, or doing whatever Power wanted in order to cop a feel, he was willing to go any distance, and fight any foe no matter the consequence. Even Katana Man was no match for simping of this magnitude. We all knew that Denji was down bad, but I didn’t know he was this down cataclysmic.
    Anyways, this video took me like two months to make, and I am very happy with it. Thank you so much for your patience and for watching! I’m excited to go make some more videos.

    My favorite CSM fact is that Tatsuki Fujimoto wrote in an extras panel that “Power is racist.” People took it out of context and tried to “cancel her” as a problematic character without understanding that she IS racist… against the entire human race HAHA

    This anime series really needed a full 26 episodes (or the announcement of a season two) to really get into the meat and potatoes of the story. But I was more or less satisfied with what we got so far.
    My wife's Japanese friend (a middle aged Japanese mom) and her college-aged daughter tried to give this show a try but admittedly all three of them (wife included) didn't like it very much. Their criticism was that it was way too shounen and juvenile. (For context, they both loved Attack on Titan.)
    It's a fair criticism at first glance but our friend and her daughter did stop at episode 4, and I think they gave up on the show way too soon, and told them as such (my wife, to her credit, did watch the show all the way through with me and even some of the manga).
    Denji may look like your stereotypical shounen hero protagonist but is pretty much a blank slate as a character and is working his way up from the bottom as an emotionally and relationship starved human being.
    My personal take is that CSM is a parody and clever deconstruction of those stereotypical shounen Manga and anime. Denji is obsessed with girls and sex but he doesn't know the first thing about the opposite sex. His creeping on Power, for example, kinda deflates his expectations of what it's supposed to be, which I thought was hilarious and a bit sad.
    Plus I like how the women in CSM have a lot more agency and say in their sexual dynamics than in other IP than just straight forward cringey fan service (looking at you, Fire Force). Power is the one who sets the rules and boundaries of her encounter with Denji in the bathroom.
    Sure, Himeno does some very sus things with Denji considering their age difference (she even acknowledges this after she sobers up the day after). And their relationship even tries to evolve into a mutual partnership and friendship (well, before her sacrifice to fight off Katana Man/Samurai Sword).
    With Makima, it's all about her grooming and manipulation of Denji. Never mind that she's her boss and the power dynamics are all skewed in Makima's favor, Denji becomes obsessed with her simply because Makima treats Denji like a human being (with some respect) after years of being treated as less than an animal for most of his life. That spark of simple consideration solidifies Denji putting Makima up on a pedestal and his idea of a dream woman (and the horribly unrealistic expectations thereof).
    Back to Power, the intesting thing about her is that she's not human and is basically starting at the same bottom rung as Denji at learning how to be a functioning human being. That's why she gets along so well with Denji (after a rocky start) and become like brother and sister.
    She's a Fiend, a Devil masquerading as a human while stuck puppeteering a corpse. She doesn't know how to human, and her past is shown as a literal feral wild child living and killing animals in the forest to survive. Power is just as emotionally stunted and relationship starved as Denji, so it's interesting to see their (platonic) bond grow beyond just mere lust (from Denji) and disgust (from Power). They've become buddies, and that's a great thing to see, sharing a single brain cell jokes aside.

      This is well said! I hope your wife's friend and daughter will give it another chance! I felt similarly when watching through the first time, but after having finished the show, and watched a lot of it several more times, the show definitely grew on me.
      All the dynamics you laid out are extremely accurate, and I couldn't have said it better myself! Thank you for writing all of that up, and explaining so fully. Also, I am definitely looking forward to getting into the meat and potatoes of the show, and am extremely excited to see what comes next. I'm sure it will be quite the wild ride!

    Wow, I can totally see why this video took you longer than you'd wanted it to, as it's such an insanely well-crafted final product that reflects the time you'd put into it!
    I will say that I have mixed feelings about this show, as a little after it began, I was simply let down. I'd heard such amazing things, and the hype was sky high, but I was surprised at how unnecessarily edgy and juvenile the show was, and it felt like it didn't live up to everyone's praise. Around the midway, when the fight with Samurai Sword and the sudden massacre of the Public Safety agents all over Japan occurred, I definitely got way more into it, and I'm definitely excited for next season, but the second, third and fourth episodes felt like a drastic 180 from the insanity of the premise and first episode.
    All said, I'm very glad to see this video, as I think your analysis repairs some of the flaws in the show for me! The analysis of Denji's realization that having Pochita's heart might have literally and figuratively taken some of his humanity away was beautiful, and made me want to see the rest of the manga get animated to hopefully see your take come true!
    Anyway, thanks for another hilarious (with all those great meme edits) and thoughtful video (in regards to the clever application of common phrases for each part), and I can't wait to see what you come up with next!

      @DrewMalou  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Henry! So sorry it took me so long to get back to you, but thank you so much! I'm so glad that you enjoyed the video. This one was definitely a fun one to make, so although it took a super long time, I enjoyed every bit of it! And yes, we shared similar sentiments about the show. I definitely think it got overhyped for me, but upon rewatching much of the first season, that feeling I had about being let down somewhat dissipated. I found that the more that I studied it, the more I found that I had actually enjoyed it. Not sure if it's like that for everyone or not, haha.
      But anyways, I too am looking forward to the rest of the story being made, and am hoping that it will deliver everything that everyone said it would! Thanks so much for watching!

      @@DrewMalou All good, I'm not the fastest in responding to you, either! I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the video making process, as that drive was key in getting such a great final product! I totally get that: I remember being hyped for the second Kingsman movie, and being let down by what it was. However, when I saw it a second time, since I knew what to expect out of it, I was able to adjust my expectations and enjoy it much more!
      I hope so, too, but after your video, I have more faith that the rest of the series will be fantastic!

    Finally sat down and watched this video and I gotta say, I really enjoyed it. Tbh I wasn’t a huge fan of the last anime related video compared to your others but rather than being negative when I watched it I decided to keep that commentary to myself.
    This one feels much more polished and cohesive. While I do agree with that other comment about music volume while you’re talking (mostly the first song), nothing else truly negative sticks out to me.
    More importantly, the positives really shine. IMO your greatest strength in your videos is the ability look at the aspects of a show that everyone knows, often intuitively, and examine them in new and interesting ways. You often pose a question or point out a detail that shifts my perspective and deepens my appreciation for the subject. All while maintaining a “flow” through the different topics and ideas you want to discuss throughout the video.
    Also I agree with you brother generally but now you got me really thinking about those eyeballs….

    • @DrewMalou
      @DrewMalou  Před 10 měsíci

      Hey, thank you for the detailed response! Sorry I'm just now getting back to you, I've been swamped these past few weeks. I'm glad you liked it! I appreciate you not wanting to be negative, but I'm always down for constructive criticism! (like the loud music). It's the fastest way for me to become a better content creator.
      I definitely took my time with each part of the process on this video, so I'm glad the polish shines through, haha. And thank you so much! That's a huge compliment. I love putting things in a different light, and trying to think about things in new ways, so the fact that I can share that with you means a lot to me. Getting people to appreciate these works of art a little more is a great reward. Thank you so much for watching, and yes... those eyeballs still wig me out, lol.

    Nice content, I really like everything about the video except the audio track. This is your second video that I am watching and both of these videos are almost ruined by the noisy and very annoying audio. It's very hard to concentrate on the narration, i get annoyed and destructed all the time. Pleeeeseee, use tracks that are more subtle, quiet and embed them in the background more. You may move the music to the foreground while announcing the next part of the video, that's okay and actually creates an atmosphere... But cmon, not while you are talking, it's very irritating.
