- This video is a collection of the most powerful sound effects in anime, collated and curated by myself. It is a celebration of the works of my favorite sound effects designer, Yasumasa Koyama. He has worked on numerous shows, gaining notoriety for his insane and often over the top approach to how he makes sound effects. In this video, I break down an interview that he gave back in 2021 where he discusses his approach to sound design. There are two main takeaways for how he designs sounds. The first is that it is important to guide the audience’s line of sight. The second is that the key to sound design is simply knowing what to make stand out when you are creating sound effects. Yasumasa Koyama is a sound effects designer and has created the sound effects for 86: Eighty-Six, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, Fire Force, Darwin’s Game, Berserk (2016), Fate/Apocrypha, Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works, Fate/Grand Order - Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia, One Punch Man Season 2, Re:CREATORS, Sword Art Online: Alicization (and the second part, War of Underworld), That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime (or TenSura), and many others!

When I first watched slime I definitely noticed the insane sound effects. Then for later shows I noticed them doing the same thing and thought "they're copying slime!" only to realize now that it was the same dude all along, mad respect for the range and different origins (a lot of punches sound like cannons or guns) he incorporates for those sound effects
Yes!! I thought something similar, although I saw Fire Force first, and thought the same thing. And yes, I wanted to talk about Koyama's "Gun-Punch" but was running low on time. I'm sure I'll do more videos about him in the future though, haha.
I actually LOVE this kind of sounds effects and have been looking for animes with this type of sound, but I didn't know it was the same guy in all of them, I thought it was more like a trend? It's weird, after getting and knowing what sound library Koyama uses everytime i watch a show he worked on and there's a sound effect i recognise i always go "oh hey i know that sound effect! I have it! :0".

I'm not sure if this is the most apt analogy, but, Koyama's use of audio distortion reminds of a filmmakers use of lens flare. Lens flares and audio distortions are artifacts created by the device used to either record or playback the media. They both add a very distinct stylistic flair. Distorting the audio seems like it flies in the face of how your supposed to professionally engineer audio. I personally can't think of crunchy or distorted audio being used for foley sounds outside of shortform meme/hype videos. I personally love it.
I think it _is_ apt. Especially since he uses peaking audio, which is like a straight parallel to lens flares
That's a great example! Koyama's sound effects make me think of J.J. Abrams' use of lens flares in the first Star Trek film, looool. Those flares were going crazy.

Similar to what you he about matching the meaning instead of the visuals, I've always been in love with the *personality* he can convey with sound effects, especially the more subtle ones. Like how King Crimson makes these animal snarl and screeching sounds at times, it sets that image of the very strange, unhinged person it's user Diavolo is- even though his stand doesn't involve animals or anything, it never feels out of place.

It's funny, I remember Fate Grand Order ADF:B being mostly forgettable story wise but the sounds stuck with me more than anything. Those beefy bass hits always struck home.
Interesting! I'm not sure if it was the setting, or the characters, or the sound design, but that's one of the Fate series that has stuck with me the most, lol. I loved ever second of it, and thought that it got better the longer it went on and the more I watched, which is a pretty rare feat these days.

20:56 Since the sound effects Koyama does are very intense they probably stand out when combined with (compared to season 1) not so amazing animation? So people focused on them.
Also! I thought Youjo Senki would be mentioned, the sound effects there seems similar imo. They definitely stood out when I frst watched it.

Haha, they're definitely some of the strongest, but I think the problem with Fate/Apocrypha is that _everyone_ kind of sounds like that, lol. There's not much to differentiate the characters in terms of sound design.

Im very interested in SFX when i came to anime, and I got to say Fate Grand order absolute demonic front Babalonya absolutely outdid itself! I remember watching it for the first time, i couldn't belive my eyes and ears it was an amazing anime, and I've have watched so much anime and started to get burnt out, but when i gave the Fate series a chance o fell in love with anime again... Amma say it The Whole Fate series had one of best sound Design in anime thanks to the man who made the SFX for it. And i really hope Fate/strange Fake gets the same love. He has some resources and examples of Koyama's sound design from JJBA that should give you a pretty good idea of what's going on, and then it's just a matter of finding some tutorials for how to duplicate, and make your own sound design choices from there!

The most important sound effect is to guide the audience's eyes
--The anime "Tensei Takera De Slyme Nadatta Koto" went on the air in October 2018. Soon it will be the third anniversary of its airing. What was your initial impression of this work, "Tenshûra"?
Koyama：I started working on this work at a time when "reincarnation" anime was not as mainstream as it is today, so I thought it was an unusual work at the time. In the past, the main character would grow stronger through hardship, but in "Tenshûra" there is almost no such depiction. I thought it was very interesting that the story progressed in a stress-free manner.
--What was your concept in creating the sound effects for "Tensura"?
Koyama: Since this is an entertainment work, I tried to make the loud parts loud and the sound pleasant. I tried not to limit my ideas too much. For example, when the magic circle is unfolding, I had a scientific image in the visuals, so I added mechanical sounds. We try not to be bound by rules such as, "This is a fantasy work, so there can be no mechanical sounds.
--So, you are adding sounds in a way that is easy to understand as a so-called entertainment work.
Koyama: Yes, that's right. It is a success story of Rimuru, and there is a lot of action in the story, so we added sound effects to the camera work and other sounds to increase the overall tempo.
--So you sometimes add sound effects to the camera work as well? Since "Tensura" has action scenes and a large army, there are going to be a lot of sound effects.
Koyama：If we add sound to everything, the volume will just be too loud for the audience's TV (stereo 2ch) viewing environment. The most important thing about sound effects is to guide the customer's line of sight.
--What exactly do you do at ...... to guide the viewer's line of sight?
Koyama: For example, let's say there is an image of the main characters coming from the back while the mob (crowd) is in the foreground. In this case, we would not add sound effects for the footsteps of the mob in the foreground, but would add sound effects for the main characters to draw the audience's attention to them. Or, in a battle scene with a large army, if the main characters are fighting in the middle of the army and the sound of the people around them is turned up while the sound of the main characters is turned down, the audience will not be able to understand what is going on. For each cut, we select "what we want to show here," and guide the audience's eyes by determining what sounds to add and what not to add, and where to raise the volume level and where to lower it. The key to sound effects is "what to make stand out.
--What did you discuss at the effects meeting with the sound director, Hitoshi Akedagawa?
Koyama: Basically, he left me in charge. That is the kind of work I do most of the time. Animation sites are made up of professionals in various fields, so each person's work is based on trust. Especially for "Tensura," I think the range of OKs is quite wide. I am allowed to stretch myself, so it is a very fun place to work (laughs).
The slime is a mixture of live sounds and instruments to make it sound pretty!
--Koyama：What kind of sound effects did you add to Rimuru in creating the sound effects for "Tensura"?
Koyama: First, I discussed the direction of the slime sounds with Yasuhito Kikuchi, the director of the first stage. Especially in the first and second episodes of the first season, there are almost only slimes. If we added too much graphic sound, it would not be cute, but if we made it sound like a cartoon (an overseas children's animation), it would be too cute. So I mixed in some instrumental sounds to keep it from sounding too cartoonish. I thought it was the key sound of the whole piece, so I worked a lot on the slime sound at that time.
--The slime's various movements have sounds attached to them, such as bouncing, squishy, rolling, and sliding sounds.
Koyama: If we had stuck to one sound, it would have been too simple, so we changed it for each important part. The sound when the rimuru moves lightly is actually the sound of a "drop of water. Or "the sound of shaking water in a bottle. When you process the "sound of water in a bottle," it becomes a rather sci-fi sound. When Rimuru sweats, I add more watery sounds, and when he moves a lot, I mix in other sounds as well. When Rimuru jumps, I add a "spring sound" so that it doesn't sound too cartoonish. When landing, I add a timpani-like sound to the raw sound so that it is not just a raw sound. If we use only raw sound, it would be too realistic, so we mix various sounds to make it sound cute.
--Koyama：When the character is startled, you can hear the sound effects of the robot's movements.
Koyama：When they are surprised, we add eight-bit beeping sounds. When the slimes do facial expressions, I mix the Eight Bit sounds with live sounds to match their reactions. However, the sounds I used for Rimuru are not used for the other characters. Rimuru's sounds are exclusive to Rimuru.
--Koyama：Do you use the same sound effects for Rimuru in "Tenshûra Nikki" as you did for "Tenshûra Nikki: Tensei Toshi Wa Slymu Datta Koto Tenshûra Nikki"?
Koyama: The same sound effects are used in "Tenshûra Nikki" as in the main story. We have to show the audience that we have the same worldview, so even though it is a spin-off, the sound of Rimuru is the same.
--What kind of sounds did you make after Rimuru took on human form?
Koyama: After she takes human form, she sounds like a normal human being. I put on the sound as a girl. Rimuru is in some ways unrecognizable as a gender, but I make the sounds according to her body shape, weight, and appearance. Recently, her body has gotten a little bigger, but I don't think I will change the way I put girlish sounds on her.
--Rimuru is the main character that keeps changing. ...... By the way, is the way you put sound effects different for boys and girls?
Koyama: Simply put, the weight of the footsteps is different. For girls, the footsteps are lighter. I also try to add gentle sounds when it is a girl. But that's just a difference in nuance. In fact, Rimuru is the strongest, so I put on intense sounds for the battle scenes.
--How did you go about adding such sounds to the various monsters and animals that appear in "Tenshura"?
Koyama: In "Tensura", the monsters are basically voiced by recording. We often add our own sounds to them. For example, in Ranga's gag scene, we added a lot of sounds to the dubbing.
--I heard that Chikahiro Kobayashi, who plays Ranga, recorded his barking and squealing during the postrecording.
Koyama: That's right. Mr. Kobayashi did all the acting, and his voice alone was interesting enough, but we wanted to create a gap in the scene, so we added the dog's spoiled voice and sniffles as ad-libs on top of that. I did that in the first few episodes and it was well received on the set, so I made it a regular part and have been doing it ever since. As a result, I ended up doing more work myself (laughs).
(Laughs) -- So, the monster-type stories are a combination of the cast's acting and Mr. Koyama's sound effects?
Koyama: When Veldra first appeared, I had the impression that it was a gag, so I added heavy sounds to every movement and made the weight of its movements into a gag.
--Verdolla reappeared at the end of the first part of the second season.
Koyama: It finally appeared. But the revived Verdra was in human form, so ...... maybe we won't use that heavy sound of the dragon in the future (laughs).
When putting on sound, it's best not to know too much about the settings and behind-the-scenes
--Koyama：If you had to name one more characteristic of "Tensura", it would be the ticker tape (the commentary scene by the Great Sage).
Koyama：I would say another characteristic of "Tensura" is the ticker tape (the commentary scene by the great sage). The ticker tape is interesting. I personally think of the scene of the Great Sage as a setting where the supercomputer must be doing some amazing calculations, and I add sound effects to it. As Rimuru grows up, the Great Sage gradually becomes more aware, and it becomes not only cool but also humorous. When Rimuru makes a mistake, we add a sound effect like "booboo" to make it sound like a gag.
--The scene in episode 35 of the second season, when Rimuru evolves from the Great Sage to the King of Wisdom (Raphael), was a real drama, including the sound effects. Wasn't that scene a tough one to work on?
Koyama: Yes, it was. But the most difficult scene in the second season was the battle scene between Hinata (Sakaguchi) and Rimuru (episode 30). The drawings and cutting were good there, and moreover, they hardly speak during the battle. There were many cuts where the pictures and effects took center stage. It was an episode with good sound effects.
--Koyama: The drawings were great.
Koyama: The pictures were amazing, so I wanted to make sure the sound effects were as good as the pictures. There were a lot of sounds, but we also put a lot of energy into it.
--When Rimuru triggered the "Gratony," there was a very slurping sound.
Koyama: It was the image of slime running amok. I gave priority to the image of the sound. After being involved in this project for such a long time, I have an emotional attachment to the main character team, so I felt like I was boosting and cheering on the main characters with the sound.
-- "Tenshura" is also a world of swords and magic. How did you go about adding sound effects to depict magic?
Koyama: I think it is better not to know too much about the settings and backstories when creating sound effects. Especially with sound effects, it is easy to get tied up in backstage settings. For example, when you are creating the sound for a robot, you might say, "Actually, it is not a robot. It is powered by artificial muscles." Even if the robot looks like a robot, we have no choice but to create a different sound. When dubbing (the final process of sound work) is done, they would say, "Something is missing. Moreover, I think there are some settings that can be understood if you read the original work, but it has to be communicated to people who only watch the animation. In order to make the most of the anime pictures, I try to put as little information as possible and give priority to the inspiration of the pictures (images).
--In the second season, there were particularly large-scale magic activation scenes. What kind of image did you have in mind when creating the sound for "Megiddo" in episode 34?
Koyama：For "Meggido," I mixed the "sound of shaking water in a bottle," which I had added when Rimuru moved. There was an element of that in the picture, and I thought it would be interesting to hook it there as a sound. It is a light sound, but what it is doing is disastrous. I created the sound with that kind of balance in mind.
-This was a rather shocking scene with 15,000 soldiers being slaughtered. So you had to make a lot of adjustments to balance the way it looked.
Koyama: There was no gushing blood in the picture, so we didn't make any blood sounds either. The scenes of Jinno's anger were drawn lightly, so we added quite harsh sounds in the other scenes. Especially in the scene with the three otherworldly people (Shogo, Kirara, and Kyoya), I added loud sounds.
--How did you go about adding sound effects to "Tensura Nikki"?
Koyama: The overall concept remains the same, but the director (Yuji Ikuhara) wanted "Tensura Nikki" to be a little less explanatory in terms of sound. He wanted to express a relaxed everyday life, so even with camera work, he did not use sound. However, the number of sounds did not change much because we added detailed sounds to the movements.
--The second part of the second season is about to begin.
Koyama: I am looking forward to it. I'm anxious to see where the story goes from here, so I hope you will continue to do more and more. I hope to continue "Tenshura" as my lifework.
