How Violence Tells a Story - The Last of Us Part II

- Let’s examine how Naughty Dog elevates the violence in The Last of Us Part II to become something more than just shock value. In the process of playing the game, the violence that we as players experience becomes a storytelling mechanic. We become directly responsible for the character's actions, especially in the cutscenes and quicktime events. As these brutal mechanics are witnessed and perpetuated by the players, it is often these moments of extremely graphic violence that we connect most deeply with the characters of the story. By their decisions, and by proxy our actions, we are subjected to horrific sights, brutal actions, and the deplorable nature of most of the characters. It is through this vicarious experience that we can relate to and begin to develop a relationship with the cast.
While most people were so repulsed that by the actions of Abby in the beginning of the game, I felt that they immediately shut out the possibility of getting to know the character and learning about her motivations. I thought that Neil Druckman and Naughty Dog definitely took a unique approach to part 2, and while I can certainly understand why a large majority of people hated it, and have every right to, I couldn’t but help admire how bold of a choice this was. It is a serious risk if you think about the consequences that it might have with the fanbase, and I think we definitely saw the negative effects of what that did to people’s responses to the game. The issue with the leaks could have contributed to the outrage and public outcry, and it’s a shame that we all didn’t get to experience that moment of the story for ourselves playing the game naturally. I couldn’t help but to enjoy it, honestly.
The combat mechanics were incredibly well done in my opinion, and they make me all the more excited to play the multiplayer for the game. I have no idea when that will come out, but I hope it's soon, because I can’t help but think about how much fun it is going to be. Thanks for watching everyone! An MMO designed like this would be so expensive and difficult to make yet so, so amazing and satisfying. And this video kind of gets my point about how Assassin's Creed games aren't really... AC games anymore. In the originals, combat was designed around stealth and exploration combined. Nowadays combat is just leveling up abilities. In a way, AC's storytelling was originally like this game... You spent the game trying to avoid combat, and when you found it you dealt with it quickly, and when you were actually discovered in the story you were at a significant disadvantage. It made each encounter meaningful.
