- The Sound Design for Shinra Kusakabe, Fire Force’s main character, is incredible. Listen closely to the sound effects, and you can hear some insights into Shinra’s character.
Whether it is fight scenes that Shinra is a part of, or just just the sound effects of him using his pyrokinetic ability, the sound design is such a fantastic experience and one that makes watching Fire Force Season 1 and Season 2 so much fun. I can’t wait until Fire Force Season 3 comes out, to hear more of these juicy sound effects. Shoutouts to Yasumasa Koyama for absolutely going ham on these sound effects and making the sound design of this show so memorable.
Oh, and apparently Shinra can travel through time or something? I'm sure it's not going to be important for Fire Force Season 3, so I left that out.
This video (and series) takes a look at how the aspects of sound design can help tell a more dynamic story. Whether it is revealing character traits, or giving the audience subconscious clues and references as to what is happening in the show, the sound design surrounding Shinra has a story to tell. The Fire Force Sound Effects for Shinra help establish his speed. They are reminiscent of an afterburner or jet engine, but also serve to reinforce his desperation in chasing after the truth. Through his many fights, whether it is Shinra vs. Charon, or Shinra vs. Burns, or even Shinra vs. Benimaru, the audience is clued in to a deeper level of storytelling through the sound effects and the overall sound design.

I know I'm a bit late to the party, but it really is sound design like this that hypes me up so much, and one of the things that has made me such a big Jojo fan; the way that you can almost _feel_ the impact of each punch or kick with the gunshot-like sound effects is such a unique and exciting sensation.

i love all this analytical looks at the sound. I've been looking at categories like music, voice acting, color, animation and sound to improve my own animations. Anotehr added layer is the fact that all of shinra's sound effects are very high pitched compared to a lot of other characters, it also gives the illusion that he's very close to the truth that he's chasing. Like its right round the corner or something, thats what i got from it.

@@DrewMalou Could be either! I just remember watching a film analysis about how high pitched sounds or rather rising pitch sounds whether musical or just as part of the environment are used to build anticipation. Love your work though, Fire Force has the makings of a cult classic haha.

Part of me wonders if they could have used the sound of a quantum computer instead. I understand the notion of speed, but with how fast he was going, it was like he existed and didn't at the same time. :D (You can look up the sound of one, but the question is - how does it sound with its Bass turnt up?)

Sound is literally what drew me to watch this anime and it has made it amazing. I hope you make more vidz about the other sounds made as well. If I could request something please do a video on the sounds of collision and high impact. They really impact the nerve system different when hearing it in this anime. Also, these sounds DO kinda occur naturally, and are potentially produced analog for the show!
In the past decade or so (popularized by SOPHIE on stuff like Lemonade and MSMSMSMS), due to higher fidelity sound capture, analog synths have REALLY made a comeback in sound design (shoutout to everyone’s Eurorigs). With the noise floor brought all the way down, you can get super clean tone out of em, and combine and modulate them in super crazy ways, to emulate all sorts of plastic and metal and fire and wind and rock-based sounds. And that last one’s important, because analog synths are basically crystals exposed to an energy source and vibrating at high speeds.
And that’s where the high-pitched, digital stuttering comes into play! that sound itself is generated by rocks vibrating at extremely high frequencies. The distortion accounts for the air tearing you get at super high speeds, and the frenetic chopping accounts for Shinra stuttering his way through the random assortment of particles, as well as representing his own near-crazed desperation.
But this is all to say if a person could move this quickly and survive, AND move precisely enough to not cause a fission explosion, it probably really would sound something like this!

I stopped watching fire force when I got really busy a few episodes into season 2. Holy shit, I forgot how good this show is. Off to go rewatch and binge the whole thing. Not before dropping a like and subscribing though. You do a great job with these videos.

i think an interesting choice is actually what is often left out from shinra's sound effects - the use of a sonic boom. maybe i just dont remember well but i think i rarely heard the sound of shinra breaking the sound barrier, at least not presented in a very realistic or explosive way. which is odd because normally people love adding explosion sound effects whenever possible. i'd like to think they made that choice to save the "explosive" sounds for the characters more oriented around exploding shit. helps make shinra's power a bit more unique and movement focused.

Okay I just got this from my recommendations, and I wasn't exactly the type to go deeper into the storytelling, although I do love myself some lore, theories, philosophical meaning and all that. But never really bothered to know the actual storytelling elements.
But even then, I can have an appreciation for these types of things. It's just so interesting, so intriguing, so cool and just amazing how one thing can become so much more and define something that didn't feel that way to something else. By that I mean, like this, associating the literal sound design with the nature of the character. Some would dismiss it as just "sound effects". But some like you, would look deeper into it and even connect the dots that makes it seem so believable, so interesting, so intriguing, so cool and just amazing.
Despite me only seeing this channel once, and only this video, I can already tell how amazing this channel is as a whole! Plus you have an amazing and calming voice! Definitely a sub from me!
