Fire Force Sound Design - Juggernaut

  • The combat sound effects are elevated in Fire Force to deliver a punch unlike anything I’ve heard before. No one embodies this better than Juggernaut, the massive fire fighter who is afraid of fire. Some people are turned off by the “bass boosted” nature of Koyama’s sound effects in the show, which is sad because they might miss out on the nature of the combat sound design.
Typically, a fight scene would have contact, impact, and clothing sound effects layered together to give a sense of cohesion with what is being shown. The speed or intensity of the fight dictates what type of sounds you use. Yasumasa Koyama does something interesting: instead of focusing on giving a sense of cohesion, he places almost all of the emphasis on the impact sound effects. Normal punches sound like gunshots, and special abilities sound almost supermassive with bass and energy.
This has a great impact on the viewer, and is what initially captivated me about the show when I first watched it. Not only does this reinforce the core mechanics of the show and reestablish the worldbuilding through auditory cues, but it delivers this information in the coolest way possible. I hope we get Fire Force Season 3 soon, so that we can hear more of this type of sound design.
Thank you for watching this series! I hope you have enjoyed it, but I am eager to work on other projects. I hope you’re as excited as I am to study other modes of storytelling and to look at other important stories!

Just a couple of recommendations for you to watch.
I believe both of these to be a bit brilliant.
The music in this one was taken form the season intro and was mixed with other things to sound 80's
At first I found the mix odd but after a while I found it brilliant, the timings between the old and the new in the mix pair good together

A this is an Add that I actually enjoy watching.
    Enough said

Those are both sick! Haha, the D&D Beyond animation was incredible. Thanks for sharing!

      @@DrewMalou it's origin is better.
They where sponsoring critical role and one of the voice actors always does those over the top amazing little performances.
One of them was a little silly song he wrote. D&D beyond requested the animation latter.
The vocie in the video is actually that same voice actor xD

Haha, that's so awesome! I've never watched Critical Role, but I know it's super popular. I've even played a few D&D campaigns, just never got into CR. Definitely looks like something I would enjoy, though!

Haha, interesting! Any particular reason why? I wasn't really a big fan of him until this fight, then I got some mad respect for him.

you barely explain anything in the whole series, you just say the sound design tells a lot or is really good and how you love it, show clips, but you give little to no explanations as to why and how it's good or genius. Even when you say stuff like it sounds like a jet engine because it comes out of his feet and acts a bit like it, that's not genius, that's something really intuitive and logical to think about when you're sound designing, it's a clever association but nothing to write home about. Or saying that making punches sound like gunshots is really interesting, it's not, they're just making it sound more intense and impactful because that's what the sound design in this series is all about, making things sound as brutal and blunt possible. So yeah the more impactfull you make an impact sound, the more it sounds like a gunshot. In the previous episode you can't just say the sounds in this scene perfectly align with the story and the characters etc than provide 0 explanation???

You know... as a fellow content creator, I would think that you of all people would have a little more understanding. Especially when you have this quote in your CZcams bio:
"On est conscient que nos vidéos sont pas extra, mais c'est assez dur d'en faire, Et on essaye de s'investir un maximum pour que nos vidéos soient un minimum intéressantes et agréables à regarder."
      Which roughly translates into:
"We are aware that our videos are not great, but it is quite hard to make them, and we try to invest as much as possible so that our videos are at least interesting and pleasant to watch."
You're right, it is tough to make content. And just because you obviously have a 200 IQ and know everything there is to know about Sound Design, doesn't mean that my average viewer does. What might seem obvious to you could be a novel revelation for someone else. These videos were meant to be a collection, collation, and celebration of Fire Force's sound design, but instead of celebrating, you chose to hate.
Instead of tearing apart my video, why don't you make your own and explain to me what's happening with the sound effects? I would love to watch your analysis of the show!
Thanks for watching my video, and always remember: It's easy to hate, but hard to create.

@DrewMalou this channel is outdated i don't post content on it lol, i don't pretend to know everything about sound design also i understand that this video is for people who know nothing about it so it's pretty logical that you would explain basic sound design stuff, so i understand on that point, it's still weird to present things as really interesting when it's not that deep. My comment wasn't a hateful one i simply didnt like the series because i don't think you made much a compelling argument as to why fire force's sound design is that great. If i was hateful i would have just told you your whole series is trash and attacked you for it with no arguments..
Also this is still some youtube videos, it's not the biggest deal in the world. I don't make youtube videos anymore so i wont be making an in depth analysis video on this anime's sound design, since you replied to my comment i'll elaborate what i think a little bit.
I think the most interesting thing you said was the sound design when shinra is going super fast, and that to emulate that they made is sound like a glitchy sound effect, like data is being transfered instantly or he's so fast that he's glitching through reality. That was a really good argument to show that in this instance the sound design is pretty genious, also it's not just the sound effect, because what you hear is exactly what you see in the animation which is a glitchy effect. In the video with burns and charon, you say burns sound design acts like a wall, you don't explain how at all, you just show a clip of the fight and that's it. I don't think you provide that much explanation in each video that's why i didnt like it.
Personnaly i really don't like fire force's sound design, as you say everything is so "beefy" and i don't have a problem with beefy sound, the stop time sound effect of the world by the same sound designer is one of my favorite sounds in anime, and it's litteraly just exploding a sub bass with compressor and distortion effects. But in fire force's cases, even the most mundane kicks or explosion/fire absolutely destroy your ears, every sound is compressed af, for the sound to not clip you put a limiter on the audio output, and it honestly sounds like every sounds is absolutely abusing the limiter. It's cool when a sound is beefy and sound very loud, but you lose the effectivness of it and the ability to determine the power dynamic of each move and characters if every kick, fire, explosion, sounds over the top. at 1:13 in your video with burns, shinra is projected and rolling on the ground and it sounds like the twin towers are collapsing. It's like that in every scene.
To me it's the equivalent of a michael bay movie, where there is no subtlety or precision because everything is so loud and saturated. (im comparing the visuals of the movie to the sound of fire force i know it's a weird comparison) instead of actually thinking about the sounds and the loudness dynamic of them, everything is extremelly loud, compressed, distorted, with a few good ideas thrown in there. The bass of the sounds relating to how powerfull each attack is, is a very good dynamic and idea for story telling, also i still don't think it's used correctly. (because most of the time everything is just loud)
O ne scene that really struck me in the anime was the joker fight in season 2 episode 12, sometimes a great sound is also determined by how special it sounds; not always by how it relates to story telling-wise. But it makes it even greater when there is that mind connection to the sound and the story. It's interesting to analyse also how the sound design can play with the character's voices and the music i think. Anyways i want to make it clear i didnt make this long rant to say your videos are trash and i have the better opinion, it's just how i think your videos didn't really give that much info and it could have been better.
I hope you didnt find this comment a hustle to read and you at least found it interesting
