Women's basketball is a JOKE!! Those will be WORTHLESS in 5 yrs!
I mean...I've never been a fan of women's basketball either. But Caitlin Clark is pretty fun to watch. Calling it a joke seems extreme.
If you could see the magazine lot i just got for $20, you'd shite your pantaloons!!!
What did it have?
good stuff, man. I'm ready to send in my SLAM and PSA magazines but have no clue what shipping products I need. Is there a company you recommend that sells the whole KIT? I know it's a rookie question, but I have to ask lol. Thanks! Excited to get into this new hobby.
That's a great question. Dealing with shipping and packaging was honestly one of the most intimidating things for me to figure out when I first started. I really need to put an instructional video together on it. Check out CGC Sports Illustrated on CZcams. He has a video that is several years old, but still helpful for shipping. I don't know of any companies that sell an entire kit unfortunately. CGC used to offer a free kit when you signed up with them, but it was for comics and was slightly too small for magazines.
that kobe looks awesome thanks brad for the videos
Thanks for always watching, Tom.
@@sportsmags brad one question for you is the chinese novak djokovic cover considered his first or would it be the recent one in blue from last month
@tomharrison6607 It's kind of up for debate. There are other athletes with similar examples. For me personally, I consider the one from last month to be his "first cover" and I consider the SI China to be his "First SI cover appearance". Kind of varies for collector on what they prefer.
@@sportsmags thanks
Great Video - did you press any of these before submitting?
Thanks! Yes, I press and clean all of my own issues.
As someone who was really into D&D in the early/mid 80's, I love that first Dragon Magazine!!!
Can you please do a video on cleaning and pressing mags?
Kobe!!!
Congrats on the Kobe bump!!
I'm kind of holding out getting my mags graded in the hopes that PSA does start grading, for a few reasons: 1. Yes, the rep of PSA would attract more buyers in auctions than CGC and "normalize" graded mags as part of the canon of sports memorabilia, rather than a somewhat fringe or niche hobby. 2. I would hope there would be a streamlined "grade and auction" option like PSA does with Goldin now, eliminating the back-and-forth shipping costs of shipping to a grader, back to me, and then to an auction house like Heritage. I wonder if Goldin's recent emphasis on asking for graded mags is a test balloon to see if expanding PSA to grade mags is worth pursuing, and thus they would then offer a similar streamlined, one-stop "grade and auction" experience? 3. I really don't find the CGC labels all that appealing, and hope that PSA can upgrade the aesthetic of that, even though PSA's card labels don't appeal to me either. Probably just a pipe dream there that PSA could improve the label aesthetic. 4. PSA does seem to have a price guide for cards graded at certain levels, and I would hope that perhaps over time they would have a trusted price guide for graded mags too. Having an accepted price guide (which still just a "guide") also makes people more comfortable getting into the hobby.
Agree on all your points. 1. PSA grading magazines legitimizes the hobby. 2. Also exposes the hobby to a ton of people 3. PSA is sports based unlike CGC. We’d have a better opportunity for their people to understand what’s important. Unlike CGC which is comic based
All great points! GoCollect did put out a magazine price guide last year, but it doesn't appear to be very comprehensive or user-friendly. I'm definitely hoping for PSA to jump in at some point.
Why are there slabs without notes from the grader on some grades under 9.6?
They used to provide zero grader's notes. Then, they would only show you grader's notes if you paid extra. Slowly, they've really improved their grader's notes to where almost every slab is getting them now. But there are lots of previously graded slabs without any notes. There never seemed to be any rhyme or reason for why some slabs had notes and some didn't.
@@sportsmags - Thank you!
I sent my first submissions in! I check everyday and it keeps saying "scheduled for grading". Man, it's like waiting for Christmas! And I only sent 5 nothing special mags in just to get the ball rolling. Plus I sent in what I think should be a range of 8.0 to possibly a 9.8 so I can get an idea how to grade the rest of my collection. Congrats on the Kobe, cool mag!
Congrats on your first submission. Let me know how it goes!
Glad your showing some SPORT covers Brad. To any of you young collectors out there who feel they missed the boat on high end SIs, you might wanna think about picking up SPORT mags while they're still relatively cheap. I saw under CGC's NEWS tab where Heritage was selling an early 9.8 SPORT with Mantle and Williams on the cover. Only a matter of time before SPORT and others catch fire.
I just LOVE the covers like that Kobe that ask some variation of "Is He For Real?" The best example in my collection is, I think a Baseball Digest, from 1951 that says on the cover, "Mantle, Cloaked In Greatness?" It'd be awesome to have a mancave with one section of wall dedicated to those kinds of covers. Then a section where they realize early someone's gonna be great like Jordan's "A Star Is Born" cover. Have a SI jinx section, bust section...
Always look forward to the Saturday 5am videos!
Great video as always
Subscriptions are making a comeback and I can’t wait until we all fully embrace it
Love these types of vids, B-Rad. Interesting to see what people are buying/selling. Always nice to see something I have in my collection.
Glad you're showing so many SPORT mags Brad, it had some top flight writing by the likes of Grantland Rice and Dick Schapp. SI did a story on SPORT's demise in their 7/10/00 issue. I wish they used heavier paper stock in the early years, I hate pulling out my 1st issue from '46 and others cuz they're so fragile. Surprised ESPN still puts out a mag, I got the 1st with Williams and Ditka. It's oversized if I remember right so can't get it graded. That Foreman cover is too cool, I love the oddball stuff, keep it coming! Wow, can't believe that Jackie Robinson LIFE only sold for $50. Maybe cuz can't get it graded? Glad to see some of the old Becketts are selling well, I've got a ton and all the 1sts. Was checking out Beckett's POP counts last night and can't believe nobody's gotten a Beckett Hockey 1st cover Gretzky graded yet. I've got several, GOTTA be a 9.8 in there!
Im on a subscription graded magazines budget. Takes patience to get top 50 sports illustrated. So many still affordable with patience.
Whats the downside if psa gets into grading magazines? Never liked grading cost going up so much due to value of item. Time to sell graded psa cards for graded magazines? Low pops so attractive. Enjoy what you do
Honestly, I don't see any downside. Right now CGC pretty much has a monopoly on the magazines, but competition drives better pricing and better quality. Although I highly prefer magazine collecting at this point, I wouldn't recommend for anyone to totally flip their card collection for magazines. Cards are still, and always will be, way more popular. But, I do think that the value on high-end magazines will continue to rise in the same way that comics have over the last few decades.
I've got lot of beckett mags from the 90s I saved from childhood. I've always wanted to Slab them. So let's go psa!
So many of those Beckett covers are awesome.
Beckett grades Magazines too as well as many other items
Beckett did briefly grade magazines many years ago, but they no longer do. Very rare you will find any of the old Beckett slabs out there with a grade. But they do still slab and authenticate autographed magazines.
😏
If that's a hint, I like it.
Great comparison holding up Montana's SI next to his card. I have a fair amount of cards but the mag displays SOOOOO much nicer. With Walter Ioos as the most prolific SI cover photographer, many SI covers are pure artwork. He took the cover of Dwight Clark's "The Catch". Still the worst play of my life but a BEAUTIFUL cover, even though I cringe everytime I see it. That PSA Tiger cover is the same picture SI used for their 4/16/01 cover. If Beckett ever starts buying back their covers I'm set. I've got all the 1st's and then some. As an old collector just getting back into it, I keep wondering what happened to Beckett? They put out a beautiful mag back in the day on quality stock. I think their card labels are the nicest too. If they had gotten into sports mag grading first, I gotta believe they'd be dominating that sphere. I've got a ton of mags to be graded but WOW is the industry in flux. I might hold off sending my good stuff in until it all shakes out. I see CBCS upgraded their labels and supposedly has a clearer, nicer slab. Do they grade sports mags anybody know? Great video Brad, I like your cerebral take on things, not just fluff. Keep up the good work!
Beckett actually did grade sports magazines at one time, but it was very brief and never took off. Yes, CBCS supposedly will now grade SI's. They've got a couple now in their census.
@@sportsmags That's too bad Beckett's mag grading didn't take off. Jim rails on CGC not getting the labeling right, like when it's someone's 1st cover. My guess is cuz CGC is a comic grading co. 1st, whereas Beckett would've been all about sports. I've got my 1st slabs coming from CGC soon. I may send some over to CBCS for comparison. I wonder if they do that whole "fair market value" charge for high $ mags?
great info as usual brad i think this was one of your predictions about psa grading magazines in the future
Good point shared - They are making their magazines collectible. I hope they end up grading magazines, it will certainly increase demand with collectors.
Thanks Rick. I hope so too.
*Oklahoma State Cowboys
Great video as always
Subscription mags pre 1990 is how we can. Take this hobby to the next level
That '74 Aaron cover is cool cuz it asks, "Nolan Ryan, Flash In The Pan, Or For Real?" Love those covers that question a superstar's greatness early in their career. I have a '51, Baseball Digest I think, that reads something like "Mantle, Destined For Greatness?" I think I have that Landis cover but in really rough condition. Sent my first five slabs in today, we'll see how I do!
Good luck with your submission!
GQ is a "black" magazine and amerikkka is RACIST, THAT'S "why"...
Einstein was a FRAUD!!!!
Women's basketball is a JOKE!!
thanks brad great covers as usual
Thanks Tom!
Hey Brad, I was submitting my first ever mags to CGC and hit a snag, so I have a couple questions. I was gonna submit 5 modern mags, 4 newsstand and one subscription (Bird's 1st). It autofilled so I could select subscription or newsstand on a couple, but then a couple it didn't. Does it matter if I hit subscription or newsstand? Will they put newsstand on the label as long as it is a newstand even if I don't put it? Before I realized what was going on, I had one submission with the Bird cover and another submission with the 4 others. Will they send subscription and newsstand copies back in the same box? On one of the newsstand issues I filled in newsstand myself but then it wouldn't allow me to submit. Jim always says to put the info you want on the label, but like I said, I tried to put newstand and it wouldn't let me submit. How do you add extra info? Thanks.
Very cool 😎 video. Slam is the shit!
One reason SLAM is hard to grade because when you order them directly from SLAM they ship them terribly with no protection and just in a cardboard box. Even the metal issues I ordered came all dinged up
Very true. Although I saw someone say recently that if you order 3 or more from them at the same time, they package them much better.
Great video as always
Subscription promotion is the only way to enhance this hobby - way too many people only talk and care about newstands but in fact nice condition subs pre 1990 are extremely rare as well - let’s goooooooo
i want to send the new Wemby and ANT - Slam magazines. Do you have a video of how to prepare them before shipping as well as the condition...? Awesome magazines, congrats!
I don't have a video on prepping or shipping. I need to add one though. Check out CGC Sports Illustrated. I believe he has one on that topic.
@@sportsmags will do. Thank you!
brad i can't remember if i asked you this before but here i go if you have a beautiful magazine 9.8 quality but the centerfold in the middle is there but it is completely loose what is the highest grade it could get thanks again
Good question, Tom. I'd have to check my CGC guidebook to answer for sure. But my guess would be a 9.4 or 9.6. They usually don't ding you as much for the interior pages.
@@sportsmags thank you if you remember mention it in the next month or so on one of your videos if you find out more info because i have some real nice late 1970s hockey and baseball illustrated magazines with the centerfold loose
awesome iverson both the grade and the cover itself thanks brad
Can someone give me some advice. I was signing up for CGC Premium but stopped it cuz I wanted to make completely sure that I could list a FedEx ship site as my "shipping information". I'd take the chance having it shipped to my house, but I can't get any info on what happens if I'm not home. Is it safer to just have it shipped to a "ship site"? Anybody out there do that? Maddening when CGC headquarters is not too far away from me and they used to allow drop offs.
I don't know if the process is the same for every location, but here's what happens for me when I'm not home. If I'm not home on the first attempt, they will try again the next day. If I'm not home for the 2nd attempt, they will try again the next day for a third and final time. If I'm not home on the third attempt, they take my package to the local FedEx facility where I can go and pick it up myself.
@@sportsmags Thanks Brad, I appreciate all the help!
Just have them ship to the Fed Ex Office ( Not main fed ex ship center BUT the FedEx Office Print & Ship Center) in your area. I always ship there and pick up my comics + mags because I'm on the road all the time.
@@Mcdowells Thank you
that psa jordan magazine is awesome thanks brad
Williams' is my favorite athlete and has an INCREDIBLE life story, can't believe his 8.5 only goes for $1,100. I have a Marilyn Monroe repro Playboy and I know they go for around 2k, I'm guessing those are repros. Man that Ring Tyson is cool, I feel like that's a steal at that price. That Ruth issue is cool, sure wish I'da went after SOMETHING with Ruth on the cover back in the day. Hey Brad, do you pick up your CGC boxes from somewhere or have them sent to your door. Cuz it's my understanding they need to be signed for, correct? Thanks.
I try to have my shipments held at Walgreens but they don’t allow me to do that any longer.
I get them sent to my house. I get so many shipments that my FedEx driver and I have become friends. I work at the community college here in town, so if I'm not home, he just drops my shipment off to me at work since that's also on his route.
Great video as always
Subscriptions are the only way we grow this market. Pre 1990 subs in great shape are still extremely rare.
Woe! Way to go!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
The autograph game is full of land mines. The experts study the signatures but so do the counterfeiters. Unless you witness it with your own two eyes there’s always going to be doubt.
