Great video
I have been under a rock 😁
great news brad
Brad, your videos are the best, and I watch them all the time, many times through. Here are some topics that would be cool for your videos. 1) A series covering the very first magazine/publication covers for Ruth, Mantle, Jordan, Pele, Gretzky, and all the stars. 2) What are the Top 20 rarest graded SIs of top stars? 3) The best ways to expand the hobby thru promotion, conference, shows, CZcams, Facebook, eBay stores, CGC, etc.
Subbbbbbbbbbbbbbbs are here and here to stay baby
The autograph game is full of land mines. The experts study the signatures but so do the counterfeiters. Unless you witness it with your own two eyes there’s always going to be doubt.
What will happen if CGC/JSA deems an autograph not authentic? Return to sender ungraded or denote on slab cover "Autograph not authentic"? For non-authenticated issues, yes, you can get them cheaper online but you're taking a risk if not really authentic. I Imagine CGC/JSA will see a lot that are not authentic.
Great question. Will be interesting to see how they handle that. I'm not sure what CBCS' current process is for that with their authentication service, but I would imagine CGC's will be similar.
Most of the autos I've picked up have already been authenticated. Of the handful I've purchased that weren't, I try to research provenance through the seller and their other items.
I would imagine that they would just treat the magazine the same as if someone sent it in not requesting autograph authentication. Either green label or universal depending on grade or request with no authentication of autograph. It would just say “fill in blank” written on cover like has been done in the past on autographed issues.
So I know you're not supposed to submit a combo of pre and post 1975 issues. Anyone know if you send in, say, 5 autographed pre '75 issues, will they all come back in the same box? One of my favorite issues is my autographed 2nd cover of Dick Butkus where he's standing there looking like he's ready to tear someone's head off, can't wait to get that graded! And just in case there are any horse racing fans in the crowd, I may have the opportunity to have the jockey who rode Secretariat, Ron Turcotte, to sign my sweet Secretariat SI. Does anyone have any actual knowledge if that's a good or bad idea from a selling standpoint? He is pictured on the cover BTW
Yes, I think that would all come back in the same box in that scenario. I've seen a couple of those Secretariat issues that I've been signed by Turcotte. My perception is that the value added with that signature is pretty minimal.
There’s some serious online chatter about PSA adding magazine grading to the list of services this year (as you know they already authenticate sigs). Stick with CGC or use PSA for this service??
That would be really interesting. I've wondered for a long time if PSA would ever venture into it. I think it would even more legitimacy to the hobby and bring more card collectors into it. But I think they may have missed their shot to take over CGC's major share due to this JSA announcement. If PSA enters, I would expect both CGC and PSA to start carrying large shares of the graded magazines market, but I'd be surprised if PSA blew CGC away. I think CGC's longstanding dominance and reputation within comics, which are highly similar to magazines, would keep them relevant in the genre.
Started seeing graded magazines on ebay a few years ago and thought this has got to be one big scam. Still hate seeing this junk on vintage ebay listings clogging up legit sports memorabilia.
Just curious, what in your opinion would make a magazine junk as opposed to a sports card? And do you feel the same way about collecting comics?
I feel like it came out of nowhere, like it was contrived, not organic. My initial thought was the guy grading was the same guy who owned a large volume of magazines and figured out a way to make a buck. @@sportsmags
