Love the vintage SI. 1956 is my birth year. I’m interested in your ‘56 covers.
Some great covers Brad! Congrats and very nice of Mike to alert you on that Clemente!
Love these vintage magazines! Warren Spahn my favorite player historically. And I absolutely adore that cover such an iconic image.
Holy moley on the Clemente!
Incredible Clemente. Congrats! A grail issue for me as well
incredible clemente cover what a guy your buddy mike is awesome
I was 9 years old when the Knicks won that Game 7 and have been a Clyde fan ever since. Great video!
Congrats on the Clemente! I have two, mailing label removed, '56 Mantle's graded. One has the dot and the other doesn't. They are both Centerfold Variants. I know I have seen it on other 50's SI's. One that comes to mind is '55 Carol Heiss cover.
Subs are making a huge comeback
As a very longtime comic collector, I can tell you that the correct term for the rusty staples issue is "rust migration". Keep up the good work Brad.
That term makes a lot of sense. Thanks!
Whooo, great box! Finally, someone revealed my favorite mag, the '55 Ted Williams. That's the crown jewel of my collection and that's me even having the '56 Mantle newstand centerfield variant. I'm not a Red Sox guy, I just love his story. Bona Fide WWII hero flying and crashing fighters, in the fishing hall of fame, irreverant. Checked my Mantle centerfold variant and it has the red dot. I've got that Clemente with Bing Crosby's subscription label who was part owner of the Pirates at the time! That label is staying on AND getting graded that way.
Many of the 1950s SI's have a colored dot there. I think they denote the printing plant.
That would make sense. I haven't noticed it on other issues besides the Mantle but I'll start paying more attention.
Brad..I believe your intuitions regarding the 56 Mantle and the red dot are correct. I have both the newsstand and the only CGC subscription centerfold listed in the census. They both have the red dot at the same location. I have seen other newsstand centerfold variants without the red dot. I believe that this is due to one of the printing houses did this to differentiate them when sorting and packing. The centerfold is basically a regional advertisement that was directed for the New England market. They didn’t want to pay extra to advertise in the entire country as that was not their target audience and they didn’t want to pay for it. Thanks. Matt
That makes sense. Thanks for the info!
Picking up a mantle this week that I know has the red dot. I will confirm once I get it.
Hey Brad, who cleaned your Ernie Banks mag? Have you ever had CGC clean a mag? Thanks
I have cleaned and pressed all of my own magazines.
@@sportsmags Have you ever done a video on how to clean a magazine? If not, is there a video you recommend? Thanks
