That Sycamore cover is pretty cool! I've got Fidrych's other cover autographed, I wish it was the Big Bird cover

Hello Brad. What are your thoughts on the SI subscription covers that came with the cardboard renewal cover? No blank box or bar code on cover. To me, those issues should be considered somewhat rare or at least unique. Your thoughts?

It seems like those issues universally had the cardboard cover, and therefore you see every single copy of those issues without a bar code or label box. Several examples I can think of off the top of my head are the Kobe's Run cover, Justin Verlander's first cover, and the Playoff Dreams cover with Kobe/Garnett. So because they're pretty plentiful, I wouldn't classify them as rare, but they're definitely unique in comparison to other modern issues. Remember, all newsstand issues before the early 80s didn't have barcodes either. It's a really beautiful aesthetic when you've got one of those covers with nothing but the cover on front.

Seems odd that some issues universally had a cardboard cover, but I'll check to see if I have any of the same issues. Or maybe I misunderstood what you said?? I have about 25 cardboard renewal covers with the white box and about 40 with the cardboard renewal cover and no box or bar code. I do have two of the same issues with no box or bar code, so it's quite possible I did understand you. Thanks for the info. I rely on you and James for all things SI/Magazines.

@citizenx7753 No problem. I think the white box labels vary by subscriber, because those usually had the cardboard covers reminding someone that their subscription was about to run out. But with some of the other ones I was talking about, those cardboard covers would be for contests and promotions that SI was offering. Those are the ones where it seems pretty much every single subscriber received it and there is not even a white subscription box on the cover.

@@sportsmags ahhh. Makes sense. The 3 I have out are for entry into a drawing, not a subscription renewal. Again, thanks for the info.

I think that the sports photographer for all SI covers should be identified by CGC. Why do you think? The SI photographers are tremendous and deserve credit.

I agree with that. That would be a nice addition to the label and it's an important part of the cover's history.
