BMW's R1150 GS Twenty Years On | Long-term Overlanding Review w/@MALVSMACHINE
It's been over twenty years since BMW released the iconic 1150 GS. I'm not a moto journalist, I'm not a mechanic, and I'm definitely not a pro-rider. But I am lucky enough to ride this bike all day, every day, so come along for the day and let's talk about this magnificent machine, this legend of a bike.

    Ferdia, I can highly recommend the BMW off-road training courses - at least the ones in Australia. I was in my late 50's when I got my first GS and the weekend course was invaluable. Two lessons I learnt which have saved me many times since: 1) Always look where you want to go. 2) Momentum is your friend. The instructor must've said point 2 a million times over the weekend and it's impregnated in my brain. By the way, the courses here you ride your own bike, no matter what the size. Ride safe mate.

      Hi there! In my experience it holds up very well to the elements, the chrome is perfect and only some paint peeling on the lower metal parts of the bike close to the road. Look up FreeMilesMC on CZcams, he's a friend of mine and reviewed the bike and talked more in depth about the build quality than I did here. I really love my Bonnie! Ferdia, loved the video so much I subscribed straight away to your channel. I ride a 2016 R1200GSA and am taking it overseas next year, and like you there's no time line, no end date, just to keep going while it's fun. My bike has just clocked over 176,000 k's from riding around and through Australia and that amount of k's has created some anxious moments for me as I plan the early stages of my trip. But seeing what you're doing on that 1150 gives me a whole lot confidence. Thank you.

In 99 I toured north Africa, a bit before Long Way Round, so I was really pleased when KTM let them down and they opted for the GSA 1150. What a wonderful motorcycle. I have a 2001 in the same color scheme that just passed 147,000 miles. While it doesn't do anything the best in performance it does do everything well. But more than that, it is a loyal companion that will always get the job done and always get you home. It's simple and rugged, built in a manner that you can't buy in a modern adventure bike, and feels like it was assembled with care. I've used my 1150's tool kit many times while riding with other people, and not once has it been used on the 1150 itself. It has character too, from the obnoxious transmission to the boxer making a racket at any time and rocking back and forth on startup and shutdown. A great bike that's willing to do anything asked of it. It's certainly not for everyone, but it deserves its place as the bike that defined the Adventure Bike as a genre.

    Great video Ferdia, you are giving Adam at Motology a run for his money with your filming work, epic scenery and camera work. On the GS I think you nailed it with one word …….. simplicity, if anything does break you can fix it or find someone locally to do it and usually cheaply. Most problems are well documented now and the fixes are all available, also doubt you ever have to really worry about bike theft on the road which is a huge relief. Not sure what oil you use but I find they burn less on 20w 50 basic car oil and try leave it on the main stand when over night parking rather than the side stand, but yep they all have a drink problem 🤣. The other great advantage the GS has that you didn’t really mention is the shaft drive, when on a long tour and off road or dusty trails no chain maintenance is a huge advantage. Stopping after a long day in the saddle and wrecked the last thing you want to do is go crawling on the ground messing with a chain and chain lube. Quick correction the first 1150 adventure was introduced in 2002, with single spark and regular abs, no servo or could be ordered without ABS like mine. Many people feel these are the best 1150’s with single spark and simple ABS, again less to go wrong. Enjoying the series keep them coming 👍

      Just don’t expect comfort on the xrv , seat is like a bloody plank 😂. Forgot to add getting a good oil level reading on a 1150gs is an art form, I hear you can do a degree in it along with the new influencer degree 🤣🤣 after a days riding leave it on the side stand for 15 -20minutes you are letting the oil from the cooler drain back down to the sump, this is why the bike hides or seem to loose the oil. Then put it on centre stand and again leave for 5 minutes. Now check oil in sight glass this is the time you will get the correct level. Anywhere around the red dot and even a bit below is is A1 not up at the top as it just seems to go straight out the breather. Check this by opening the breather plug, it’s just near the gear shift under the air box. You’ll see a small black plastic plug there and give it a quarter turn and have a cloth under it as there your lost oil will be found 🤣 don’t over fill the oil, halfway is perfect and waste of time checking it on a cold engine as the level will be all over the place. All this is called character I think 😂

  • @HahnJames
    @HahnJames Před 20 dny

    This was a comprehensive look at your travel companion and faithful steed. It was enjoyable to watch. If she's running well, there isn't much to worry about having to top her up with motor oil often. That is unless it's dripping onto the ground or spraying all over you and other parts of the bike. If that's not happening, there's only one other place that it can be going, through the combustion chambers and out your tailpipe. In the long run, years down the road, a layer of carbon will build up on top of your pistons. This drops engine performance because it takes up space in your combustion chambers. That stuff is really hard to get off of a piston, too. You only need to worry when she starts to lay down a blue-gray smoke screen when you open up the throttle. If and/or until then, keep doing what you're doing. I am eagerly looking forward to your next video.

American drivers, those in four wheel vehicles, at least, consider other people and their vehicles as only objects in their way. Sliver linings - at least the newly exposed ruins have to be stabilised and protected and the monuments are being restored. It's fascinating to see it taking place on such a wide area in a singular project in order to build the new resort town, never seen anything like it 😲

    Great episode , well done 👍 would you not just get yourself a phone mount for the bike and use Google maps and use off line when data is expensive, must be a right pain in the arse stopping all the time to check your phone in your pocket. Honestly Google maps is probably better than most dedicated bike gps. Very enjoyable series so far thx.

      Always on the lookout for one because yes it's a real pain. The GS bars are a little awkward and it's not such a priority which is why it's taking a while; for the moment the spoken directions from Google maps into my headset do the job. But a nice phone holder... Definitely on the cards 😁

      @@unOrdinaryWorld I’ve tried a fair few over the years and the best for me so far is the ram quick grip, fairly cheap and works really well on the GS bars. I’ve dropped the GS loads of times and the phone is always still there and doesn’t get damaged. I’ve used voice before and with a good phone mount I nearly always just turn the voice off as I don’t like the nagging distraction and prefer to glance at the screen every now and then, plus it often gives you a good view of what the road is like ahead which can be very useful. Don’t use the butterfly tightening bolt and just stick a regular bolt onto the ram mount and then it’s nice and secure from the tea leaf’s 🤣 great to see “ babe’s” is clattering away nicely in Turkey 👍

    Kind of a cliffhanger this episode. Boy! You are one of a kind. 'I'm sorry mum, but don't worry, if you're watching this video it means all went well.' 😅

    I actually had white knuckles and I kept leaning away from the edge as if that would accomplish anything. I'm quite grateful for the low visibility (selfish of me, yes) so I didn't have to know how steep the drop-off was.. Riveting! Adding to my list of Ferdia quotes: "Where grannies are there's good food."

    I'm glad that you didn't go slip slidin away. It's great how you persevere and keep moving forward through all sorts of conditions. You are a brave man but, what else can you do? I love a good old thunderstorm but, only when I don't have to be out in it and I can watch it with a roof over my head. I was definitely feeling your tension as you started down that muddy road. I've been in some tense driving situations. They were almost always weather related like, getting caught in a crazy blizzard or maybe, I was the one that was crazy for getting caught in the blizzard. Fun stuff! I'm looking forward to your next video with eager enthusiasm!

    Well done. I could see how emotional you got. I remember the first time I went to Rome and walked the cobbled streets and saw the ruins - I was overcome by the thought that Julius Ceasare may have walked on the very same stones I was... the history that was at my feet was mindboggling.

    So difficult to really grasp the age of these two sites Appreciate your observations about prices, tourists, weather, and the pros and cons of one site vs the other. When you talk to me about it I feel so sure that I'm going to go, too. That's your magic.
