Hi! My name is Stefan Schmalhaus. I'm a journalist and book author from Germany.
A couple of years ago, I became heavily involved in the knife community. I started writing and photographing for the German knife magazine “Messer Magazin”, and soon after, in 2014, I published a well-received book on pocket knives. The English translation of the book was released in 2018.
I occasionally review knives here on my CZcams channel. Most of my videos are about elegant folding knives. If you enjoy my videos and don't mind my German accent, please subscribe to stay updated on new uploads.

Hey stefan hope you’re well. I was just wondering if you ever thought about doing a review of an american classic, the Buck 110 or 112.
@@navyvet05 I usually stay away from popular knives that have already been reviewed by everybody and their uncle.
Some of the original brands; Fontenille Pataud (Thiers) Forge de Laguiole (Laguiole) Laguiole de l'Artisan (Laguiole) Laguiole en Aubrac (Aubrac).
Laguiole en Aubrac is located in the town of Espalion. Btw, what exactly do you mean by "original brand"?
Original as in 'actual local produced'. Nothing more. As you put it, some brands are as old as 'Since 1987'...
Лайоль - мерседес среди ножей!
It depends on the manufacturer!
Thank you for the video! Which brand would you recommend for a simple black horn corkscrew? Is there a shop in Germany that you can recommend? I‘m based in Munich. Thanks!
This is a Laguiole video, I'm not sure why you ask for a corkscrew. But if you're interested in a Laguiole knife with a corkscrew, there's a shop in Munich you should visit: Hans Nahr, Sendlinger Straße 1 (messerexklusive.de/). They sell beautiful sommelier knives by Forge de Laguiole. EDIT: I just looked it up on Google Maps. It says "Permanently closed". 😞
Thanks, wry useful review
Thanks for watching!
One another beautiful knife Mr Schmalhauss. And this one : the Pesketaer from Penn kleiz, a French Girl who's making knives. Tschüss.
Thanks for watching!
Excellent photography, highly recommend
Thank you!
Got a Dragonfly2 in zdp-189, as close to perfect EDC as anything ever made….but I end up carrying a Byrd Robin2.
Thanks for watching!
Eine gute und gut gesprochene Vorstellung, besten Dank🙂
After your comment on the Hubertus video, I decided to check out the Mercator as well! It's such an interesting history, I couldn't help but buy one with the classic "black cat" and one with the new Otter Messer otter!
do appreate your kind tone in the videos. been thinking of getting a water bottle pouch after all for my bag too. glad to hear it is ok to carry! i was worried how the weight would carry too.
Thanks for watching!
Great review 😊
Thanks for watching!
11 years old and this video is still interesting and informative! Kudos~ I just bought my first Hubertus and I’m so excited!
The Hubertus pocket knives are now made by Otter Messer, Solingen.
@@StefanSchmalhausoh interesting! Is that good? Or, just different? Forgive me for my ignorance on the subject. =]
@@disarmyouwitha Otter is a highly respected manufacturer. They make the famous Mercator knife (also known as the black cat knife). I think it's a good thing. The family that owns the Hubertus brand wasn't able to find a successor to run their own factory so they licensed the business to Otter.
Very frustrating that Maxpedition doesn't make a sleek clamshell pouch with a belt clip for EDC. Everything is bulky and over-engineered for hikers and stormtroopers.
Its basically a fingernail cutter.
Hunting=dead animals, not apples & bread.
Tanks , excellent
Hi I'm not sure if this post is still active but he ho , i was lucky enough to get hold of one of his beautiful navette knives and it is perfect, on closer inspection i find it amazing how he had hidden the pin for the back spring the middle pin you see is holding the scales ,i feel very lucky to own this 🍻👍🙏
Indeed, you can consider yourself lucky because Renaud Aubry passed away a few years ago.
Thank you!
Sehr schönes Teil; genau mein Geschmack! Danke für's Vorstellen..
Gern geschehen!
Thank you for sharing the history behind this iconic cool little knife.
You're welcome!
WAYYYY over built & bulky compared to the little amount of space available to store things. That's a common issue with Maxpedition. I have the Mini & Micro pouches which are fine with space, but these would be too little for the bulk it creates. For example, if you pack the inside by using all the pockets then you can barely fit anything in the outside panels.
It’s hilarious Stefan how close captioning translates when you say Laguiole It has never translated it the same way twice using words like you all are La Girl I love the knife by the way
😂😂😂
Thanks Stefan I just bought one today and am hoping it is a good one
Which brand did you buy?
@@StefanSchmalhaus Laguiole Tradition France #440 Green and Red with Beautiful File Work It wasn’t terribly expensive but I’m hopeful that it will be a nice introduction to French knives for me
Idea what the smallest version of the Byrd?
Look it up: www.spyderco.com/catalog/category/byrd It's probably the Byrd Finch.
I love your content! I'm 74 and want to give my grandson an old fashion German pocket knife. I can't find Linder, Hubertus or vintage Robert Klass anywhere. Do you have any suggestions? Something limited edition or vintage would be cool.
You didn't even tell me where you live. How am I supposed to know where you can find vintage German pocket knives? Get your grandson a Böker Sportmesser. Böker calls it Camp Knife in English. You should be able to order it from the Böker website. It's an iconic German pocket knife that's been around since 1869.
Very nice. Hi from South west France. The only thing I don't like on those knives is the word ''Sons'' written in too big letters that draw too much attention. As far as I'm concerned, those ''japanese'' and ''navy'' douk douk are much more beautiful than the ''original'' Douk douk.
What is the purpose of the spring if you have to open the blade by hand?
Are you new to the knife world? It's a slipjoint knife, the spring keeps the blade open. Don't confuse this kind of knife with knives that have a spring-supported opening mechanism.
@@StefanSchmalhaus Not new to knives at all, I'm from Sheffield, the home of the finest knives ever made. I was just curious as to the purpose of the spring in this instance, you've explained so thanks very much.

Again you made a beautiful video on a beautiful knife. And I am hungry now ;-) Greetings from the Netherlands 🌷, TW.
Thanks for watching!
I got my first Laguiole en Aubrac knife today (with Hammered Bolsters & Double Chiseled Plates Horn Tip Handle). I love it! What a beauty! I also have an old Rousselon Freres Laguiole knife from around the end of 19th beginning of 20th century. Thank you for the informative video!!! It is perfectly made!!!👏👏👏
Thank you very much for your kind words! Greatly appreciated.
i never see screws with this brand, are these servicable?
These are traditional French pocket knives. You can't take them apart. If this is important to you, buy a modern knife from Spyderco, Benchmade etc.
@@StefanSchmalhaus hi, txs for answering. i do find it important that you can maintaince them.
Thank you, for demystifying the lore around these beautiful knives.
Interesting and informative video! Thank you, I appreciate it a LOT 👍 Greetings from the Netherlands 🌷, T.
Thank you for your kind words!
Too bad I came across this video just recently, and I cannot find this knife... :(
Unfortunately, the company Friedrich Olbertz doesn't exist anymore.
Thank you for your kind and prompt response. Their knives are what I call the elegance of simplicity. Functional and beautiful, and.. not available anymore.@@StefanSchmalhaus
Great information. I was just looking for some footage of the knife pattern while I decided if I wanted to buy one. I stayed for the history lesson.
Thank you for your kind words!
I like your videos, i find it honestly awesome that you explain everything, and it's interesting to know those differences between them. ❤😊
Thank you for your kind words!
Spartan is best!
Did the Spartan become the Minimalist? Looks the same but it has been a decade. Oh it is the #229 but Amazon just listing it dumb. Says Spartan in the details.
Last thing you want is a bag without wheels. You have to drag your bag on your shoulder throughout the airport. You will be sore.
Still my all time favorite CZcams video ever!!!
