From the Vault. Episode 1: The Last Cato - Matilde Asensi
Before I started this CZcams channel, I wrote reading experiences. I want to give a book some extra attention after I’ve read it, otherwise it is such an abrupt ending that simply feels unfinished somehow. I used to publish my written reviews on my website Leeservaringen.com. There are more than 500 reading experiences on that site. Some of those may be interesting to other readers. So, I’ve decided to every now and then browse through this backlog of my own book reviews and pick one that I believe is worthy of sharing with you.
Today I took from the vault my reading experience of The Last Cato by Matilde Asensi.
Enjoy!

For me, Holy Blood, Holy Grail became more and more unbelievable as the authors stacked one "what if ...?" question on top of another "what if ...?" question, until the chance of what they were proposing became so utterly improbable that the argument finally collapsed. It was, however, entertaining.

I started reading Heinlein in the 60's as a kid with his juveniles and keep growing with him as the decades passed. I can''t say I read all of them but I read most at one time or another. The 1991 version of Stranger In A Strange Land where the 1/3 he cut for the 1961 version was included is one of my favorite. Time Enough For Love is another fave. Robert expanded horizons, pushed boundaries and created wildly independent characters that lived life their way. I enjoyed the Kettle Bailey stories which concluded in Friday. Tunnel In The Sky. Glory Road. There were some serious gems in his work. It may only be a personal taste but every one has their preferred flavor. Thanks for the tribute of one of the great grand masters. Those last few you presented are excellent! Enjoy.

Heinlein circles around to different time points of some of his core characters. In "The Rolling Stones" Grandma Hazel mentions being involved in Luna's revolt against Terra, as a youth. Her name is Hazel Mead Stone. We meet her younger self in "The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress" where she winds up running "the Baker Street Irregulars" Mike Holmes child intelligence network. Hazel Mead who marries into the Stone Gang. Hazel Mead Stone then emerges as Gwynn in "The Cat Who Walks Through Walls", working for the Time Corps. Alongside Lazarus Long. The Martians from "The Red Planet" are the Martians who rescued and raised Valentine Michael Smith in "Stranger in a Strange Land". Since Humans are being allowed to live on Mars, this implies that the Martians are still debating/deciding as whether to allow Human existence to continue; or they are just tolerating us for the time being.

I wanted to like the Red Rising series so much because it has a fantastic premise, but really only the first book is likeable. The second book drops significantly both in prose quality, in character focus and even plot. I DNF'd the second book at 70% and even 50% of that 70% I listened on audiobook forcing myself to get through it hoping it would get better.

      @alb0zfinest Před 10 dny

@@DutchGreyBeard It's just disheartening to see a persistent lack of quality & consistency in modern fantasy and sci-fi. I don't know if the drop in quality is because authors are publishing at younger and younger ages, or whether there has been a genuine decline in writing capacity but it's just one disappointment after another. The worst part is, as a general rule I usually don't DNF books so it's suffering one book after another with 500-1000 pages. 😆 It's unfortunate but I think I'll have to go back to just reading regular fiction.

Good tag with interesting answers! Oooh - Darrow is showing up as a favorite! No surprise about all the Duncton ones and McCaffery. You've had a productive year so far. I, too, prefer paperbacks because of the weight. The older, short mass market size is my favorite. And, I don't really care what the book looks like - it's whats inside that counts! My biggest surprise read of 2024 was The All Souls trilogy by Deborah Harkness. I had no idea that I'd enjoy reading about witches, vampires and demons. It was the beginning of many books in that subgenre. Some of my favorite fictional series characters in all of my reading will always be Jack Reacher (Child) and Eve Dallas (Robb), but Kate Daniels has joined the group. Who knew!? Escaping into another world in a book always makes me happy, regardless of the genre. The search for the next awesome book always continues!!

Yes, Darrow made the cut. Golden Son is very good so far (150 pages in). The Deborah Harkness books you mention would have landed on my TBR 1,5 year ago. Interesting! Beautiful: the search for the next awesome book always continues. It is almost as if the promise trumps the actual book.

Agree with you about the hardback thing. I’m ok with books looking nice but they take up *way* too much space. I avoid trade paperbacks as well

Mass is beautiful. Trade paperbacks, only if there's really no alternative.

Welcome to the family brother :-) Now a piece of advice from a WoT Veteran... the best read, is the first re-read. But there are neither beginnings nor endings to the enjoyment of the Wheel of Time... they are all amazing.

Good vlog! I remember back to 2007 when hearing of Robert Jordan's passing. I was devastated. The series that I had grown up with would not be finished? And then finding out that Brandon Sanderson would be finishing it with the notes that Jordan left for him. It wasn't perfect, but it was as good an ending as we could have asked for. I will always be grateful to Brandon for that? What a journey. Will always be my favourite series! I was hooked from the first time I saw the cover of The Eye of the World. I will always picture Moraine and Lan that way. Be well, stay safe.

I have done the Read What You Own Challenge for three years. The whole idea is to stop buying books indiscriminately.

Impressive. Yeah, I understand the idea, and I applaud people who can do that. For myself however.... the escape-door to buying new books remains too attractive.

Stormlight archive might be a good choice to start now, considering book 5 (end of Arc1) is coming out in December. Would mean you could read all 5 in a row without having to do any re-reads.
