- Another book haul in which I have to admit that I bought more books than ever: 55 books in 43 days. Some science fiction, a few non-fiction, but mainly... fantasy.
0:00 Introduction
3:47 Non-fantasy
5:42 Fantasy
7:47 Children's books

I added up my receipts for 2023 and discovered that I’d spent just a shade over $5000 in books, both new and used-mostly Sci-fi and fantasy with some basic literary fiction, horror, mystery, and biography. I have 18 bookcases and need to build two more to comfortably accommodate everything. It’s the best use of available time and funds because it contributes to the quality of your mind, thus heightening the most important aspect of our unique human experience.
That all sounds strangely familiar. Beautiful closing words. I’m going to memorize them. Thank you!
I'm not sure I've ever felt more jealous of a book haul in all my life! and believe me, I watch many haul videos 😅
Wow, I almost feel guilty 😂
ha ha! Don't feel guilty, I think you should buy more books and do more hauls 😂@@DutchGreyBeard
As a fellow Dutchman I can definitely recommend "De grot die gebouwd was" by G.J.G Klaassen. It's a Dutch high fantasy book (which is rare enough) and was actually written by a former teacher of mine. Loved the haul and can confirm that there is no such thing as too many books!
Thanks for the recommendation. I’ve been wondering if there was any good Dutch fantasy out there!
Great book haul. Good to see someone enjoying older series. Best book haul I’ve seen in ages!
enjoyed this video! this is the first video i’ve come by of yours. thank you for sharing!
I just finished listening to Childhood's End yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it! Happy to see it in your haul.
The King of Elfland's Daughter is one I really want to read one day. You've clearly got a great haul here.
Both books are high up on my TBR. 🙏
A friend recommended your channel and I'm glad she did. I'll definitely be watching more of your videos as I'm interested to see how your fantasy journey is going. Amazing haul, makes me feel good about how many I'm buying.
I love the Pern series by McCaffrey and recommend you also try her Crystal Singer series as well.
Thnx to you and to your friend! I am working on a video on the first 6 Pern-books. I’ll check out the Chr. Singers. 🙏
This is the first video I saw from you but I already subscribed to your channel, I want to see your journey in the fantasy world ;)
What a haul! There's no such thing as too many books... Glad you enjoyed the first Milly Molly Mandy. I've read the first 2 Redwall books - plan on reading the next one soon. I've got the King of Elfland's Daughter on my shelves. Probably time I read it along with Phantastes.
Thanks Nev. As we speak I've read all the MMM-books. Just lovely. And it's good if you wanna burn through pages ... Redwall is very high on my ToBeRead
@@DutchGreyBeard just be aware the first Redwall book has some oddities that apparently aren’t in future books because he hadn’t settled on some of the world building
@@NevsBookChannel Okay, I'll keep that in mind.
No explanation/defense needed about buying excess books. There really are only two primary issues: responsible spending and personal enjoyment. As long as your bills and other financial commitments are taken care of and as long as you are buying for your enjoyment alone (not just buying to make videos or to have more books than another booktuber for example) buy until your heart's content! I completely understand your reasoning and I'm just in my 40s.
Thanks for understanding! Just buying to make video's... or to have more books... People are strange...
I love watching your book hauls and selfishly hope you never stop making them! Immediately added The King of Elfland's Daughter to my TBR. Speaking of classics, I actually just started reading Phantastes yesterday and am loving it so far; a quarter into the book. Thanks again for all of your recommendations!
Thanks Amanda, although I’m sad to say that this will most likely be my last book haul for some time. I’ll explain why in my next video. Great to hear your positive respons to Phantastes. It inspires to pick up that book soon.
From a fellow Dutchman: Zoals mijn ouders zouden zeggen, liever verslaafd aan boeken dan aan alcohol haha! Hail to you, Graybeard! Glad to join you on this journey 😊
Thanks. Wijze ouders had jij!
Last Hero is available in a variety of sizes depending on how big you want the illustrations, unlike Eric, there isn't a version without.
Thanks, I’ll check out the options once I’m about to read it.
Another wonderful haul! Thank you for letting us share vicariously. I think you must like dragons too! And you've gotten the part of Discworld where I started - the witches 😊. Glad you have plenty to read.
I'm a little more than halfway through Duncton Wood. It's much more of a romance than I expected it to be. I'm currently reading too many books because a couple have become available on libby after being in a very long queue. And there are many folks waiting for me to finish...
Enjoy your reads!!
Thanks! Funny to sea Duncton Wood referred to as a romance. It certainly has elements of it. I am listening to Duncton Found (3) right now and am in awe of Horwood’s writing.
Fantastic haul Ed! I’m excited to hear your thoughts on the Redwall books, especially after hearing your thoughts on the Duncton Chronicles
Thnx, Dan. Yeah, somebody else linked Redwall with Duncton. Makes me all the more eager to start reading them!
I admire your sincerity 😂
Thats an impressive haul. I think i have 20 unread books currently and three in progress. Emperors of Rome by Mary Beard, Titus Groan by Mervyn Peake and Endymion by Dan Simmons. I also recently bought Duncton Wood from your recommendation. Happy reading to you!!
I truly envy your clear TBR. With mine so humongous I sometimes even forget titles that are on it…
Wonderful hauls! I really enjoyed all the Riyria books and listen to them in audiobook format. I too thought about them for some time afterwards and want to relisten to them soon.
Thanks. Can't wait to continue in Riyria!

What a great haul, I hope you enjoy them all.
I do a similar thing, when I have spare money I buy lots of books so I'll always have something new to read during the times where money is a little scarce.
Thank you for all the great videos, I really enjoy your channel.
Thanks. Still… how much is enough 😂
@@DutchGreyBeard if you ever discover the answer please let me know 😂
I plan on retiring i three years, so I have been buying books against that time, so i have hundreds to read. Im with you!
Great! Retirement is one of those paradisical prospects... stil about 8 years away for me...
@@DutchGreyBeard yes. Planning in these times is chancy at best. I probably should have said 'hope' lol.
If you love Anne McCaffrey, you can also consider reading them in the universe order. You can look it up and you would start with Dragonsdawn. There is no right way to read them, just a different way to consider them!
Thanks for the tip. I'll look it up. For now (after reading the first 6) I'm taking a small brake from Pern.
What a haul! Lots of great titles in there. Enjoy!
wow redwall! I loved those books as a kid. The first one has a nice mystery vibe which I really like and which the series has sporadically but never as much as the first one.
BTW: The last/next Ryria Chronicle book, Drumindor, is coming out. :)
Thnx, wasn't even aware another book in that series was due.
@@DutchGreyBeard I had a feeling! They just did the Kickstarter for it. And the Ryria Chronicles KS is also up and running.
@@DutchGreyBeard Apparently it's going to be 8 books in total as explained in the Kickstarter's page for the special hardcover editions
I read four or five books a month, and always buy four new books a month when I get paid. Plus I alway borrow a couple from the library each month. So in other words, I’m accumulating books faster than I read them, if only by a little each month. I should stop buying and borrowing from the library and I’d have enough reading material for at least a year. But where’s the fun in that?
I think you're doing a fantastic job keeping your TBR alive and kicking.
Hey, Do you have a Goodreads account?
I do, (EdLute) but it's more or less dormant. I somehow cannot find my way around Goodreads.
@@DutchGreyBeardMaybe take a look at The StoryGraph? It's prettier and has really cool graphs and more in depth filtering and challenges
I hope you’re in therapy ! Of course I’m only speaking out of envy !😊🐾😊🙌
I am my own therapist now, with the RWYO-challenge! 🤞
