  • In the month of April I did a buddy-read of Scott Lynch's The Lies of Locke Lamora, the first book in The Gentlemen Bastards series.
Interesting to see how two people have different experiences of the same book.

As a reader reader I genuinely appreciate your perspective as a reader writer, you bring things to my perspective I wouldn't normally consider and helps bring me a deeper understanding of the book.

Excellent video. I can identify with your thoughts on this book. I'm glad you had such an enjoyable time reading.

I like that you had a contrasting experience to reference. I forgot how quotable these books are, ha. I see what you mean about the longwindedness, in this case it adds to the entertainment so I can forgive that. Sebastien de Castell's Greatcoats is the same way. Great video!

Thanks, Rabin (hope I spell that right)! Yes, cannot wait to start with Traitor's Blade.

Ah I was waiting for your review! I read the prologue + 1st chapter a couple of weeks ago, but I put it down because I wanted to read it at a time when I could be fully invested in the story (I have exams at the moment). I really loved the writing style & I heard that it is somewhat reminiscent of disguise/trickery/revenge stories like "The Count of Monte Cristo" by Alexandre Dumas -- my favorite book of all time. All this praise for "Locke Lamora" is making me anticipate my reading experience even more. I'm now reading Pratchett's "Going Postal" to tide me over until that time. Great video, Ed, as always!

It was a new class of fantasy for me - neither epic nor classic nor urban. Whatever it might be called, I like it! Despite the predictableness of the last third of the book, I enjoyed our buddy-reading experience! I do feel that flashbacks, in general, interrupt the flow of a book, but in this one, the flashbacks were the most interesting parts of the book.
Now that you have discovered that you enjoy grimdark, I look forward to your thoughts on The Blade Itself. A very long book with dislikeable characters and, as Red Fury explains, no plot whatsoever 🤔. Many people love the series, but the lack of "why" and "what" drove me crazy - lol.
Thank you for the buddy-reading opportunity! Look forward to more!!

Thnx BJ. The honor was all mine. I'm already warming up 'The Blade Itself' outside of the TBR bookcase.

I always look forward to your uploads! Watching your videos reminds me of why I started reading fantasy and motivates me to read more. I read this book earlier this year, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My favorite series in the grimdark genre is definitely The First Law trilogy by Abercrombie - I am excited to hear your thoughts about that series if you do end up reading it, as well as your review of The Stormlight Archives later this year! Thank you for all your work and effort :D

Thanks so much for your kind words. I believe I just might read First Law sooner than I had anticipated. I will definitely do a Reading-Experience video by then. For my first Stormlight Archive I might do a reading vlog.

Nice analysis. Have you had a chance to look at Phantastes yet? I sent an email but not sure it got through

In general, I liked the book, but to be honest, I was put off by the fact that the main character is just a criminal, the book says that his team has already looted so much that it will last for a lifetime and will still remain for grandchildren, but they continue to steal, just for the sake of interest, so as not to lose their skills! I liked that there is almost no magic in the book! But the actions of the main character at the end of the book to save people seemed far-fetched and insufficiently motivated! I have 4 stars out of 5, I hope in the next books we will learn more about the story of his first love!

Locke is sort of a 'Robin Hood', with the exception of giving the money back to the poor... Playing cons is all he knows.

I will be very curious what you think of the next book. The first half I thought was incredible, but it makes decisions in the second half that really turned me off. And I'm probably done with the series, unless it gets finished and said ending is v well received by most.
I would say Scott Lynch could improve his plotting and character development. Sometimes he moves incredible fast for the sake of it, and sometimes characters don't seem to change at all. Although I suppose one key element of grimdark besides the gore is frustrating reader expectations.

This makes me all the more curious to start book 2. I partly agree with your criticism, although the plotting in 'The Lies...' was pretty good.
