HEADING FOR FINNISH LAKELAND | LOVIISA & HAMINA 🇫🇮
My amazing road trip through Finnish Lakeland starts with a drive along Finland’s south coast calling in at Loviisa and Hamina, two interesting towns between Helsinki & the Russian border.
🇫🇮 See more of my travel vlogs from Finland here → bit.ly/mwt_finland
Finnish Lakeland (Järvi-Suomi) is the largest lake district in Europe containing over 50,000 lakes and an almost endless landscape of lush forestry. My road trip in Finland’s far east will capture plenty of spectacular driving routes, hiking trails and nature. First though, we’ve got to get there!
I hired a car from Helsinki Airport and set off for Porvoo, it was late so I booked some accommodation (Motelli On Line Porvoo) to get a good night's rest. The next morning I was up early and back on the road driving along Finland’s incredible south coast towards Loviisa and Hamina.
I took a short self guided tour of Loviisa as soon as I arrived, parking close to the Stone Park in the Old Lower Town. From there I wandered through a cemetery and up onto a trail that followed the Eteläharju ridge to a red iron-made, art nouveau styled observation tower (Kukkukivi Näköalatorni). Of course I couldn’t resist climbing up to the top!
I headed into the new town and marvelled at the mighty Loviisa Church (Loviisan Kirkko) which was close to the Town Hall overlooking Loviisa Market Square (Loviisan Tori). On my way out of town I stopped off at Loviisa Fort at Garnison Park, a defensive structure built by the Swedes after their defeat in the Russo-Swedish War 1741-1743.
I continued driving east until I arrived on the circular streets of Hamina Finland - and took a quick look at the Largest Flag of Finland (Suurlippu), the so-called Monumental Flag of Finland. Hamina was built on a radial ring layout which makes walking along the streets kinda cool if not confusing!
Literally in the centre of Hamina is the beautiful yellow Hamina Town Hall (Haminan Raatihuone) which just happens to be across the street from the wonderful St John’s Church (Johanneksen Kirkko). I walked over to Hamina Market (Haminan Tori) where I spotted the Ukrainian national flag proudly flying on top of a circular tower.
My final stop was the historic Hamina Fortress (Haminan Linnoitus) which doubles up as a concert venue and the home of the Hamina Christmas Market during the winter months. According to my sources, the fortification’s casemates double up as the stalls of the market - which is a pretty neat idea if you ask me!

And you were absolutely right in the beginning. Many foreign tourists see Helsinki and Lapland ski resorts only, and that's a pity. Our country would have much more to offer. Finnish Lakeland is quite unknown to foreign tourists. There are a lot of remote, but nice places like Petkeljärvi near Ilomantsi or Valamo monastery between Joensuu and Varkaus. There are summer cities like Lappeenranta, Savonlinna, Kuopio (which is almost an island) and maybe even Kajaani. A lot of genuine people, small museums and wacky festivals too. International marketing is just terrible or non-existing for the most of it, even though you'll do fine with English almost anywhere.

Hi Matt. Thank you for another exciting video. True, Helsinki airport hotels very expensive. You are a (true) adventurer, visiting places that I possibly might never get visit myself. The wooden buildings remind me of structures in New Zealand. The countryside looks beautiful and remote. There must be thousands of kilometers of borderland between Finland and Russia. Generally, filming at border crossings is forbidden but if you do come near to a border crossing, it would be interesting to hear if any traffic is permitted across the border. Wising you on-going travels. Cheers Zoltán

If everything was destroyed by the Russians in 1944, everything we see on the video in the center of the city is built by the Russians. Is that correct?

    • @MattWhitingsEurope
      @MattWhitingsEurope Před 11 dny

No that's not correct. Not everything was destroyed by the Red Army in 1944, and there were lots of buildings built during the period of Soviet occupation after 1944.

As with many other places in central and Eastern Europe, much of the 20th century history was cruel and dark….”eerily cold inside”…Don’t know about you but I believe those prisons are literally haunted by ghosts. Seems like you were the only visitor at that time, even more eerie….Beautiful editing…very informative…I forever feel sad when seeing before and after pics/ videos of places that have been destroyed as a consequence of war. Thanks again Matt. ZZ

Thanks for watching, glad you found the video interesting. I know what you mean about the feeling of past atrocities haunting those buildings - such a dark history, you can't help but to feel bad for all the people affected. Fascinating day, I learnt so much myself.

Great video, what drone did you use, I'm going there on Friday and was thinking about taking my mini 3 pro, but want sure about flight rules, we're actually stressing in the same hotel as yourself, looking forward to it

Hello there, I used a Mavic Air to get the drone shots. Working out the rules when I visit other countries can be quite a challenge. I usually use this resource --> uavcoach.com/drone-laws-in-latvia . Hope it helps and I hope you have a great time, what a coincidence we're staying at the same hotel! Great location.

Always love the Communist tours. Good luck on the prison being open. That's quite a place. Too bad you couldn't get in and see the ice skating rink. Good idea landing your helicopter at a different spot. Hopefully that hotel is no longer bugged!

In Linnahall (City Hall near the sea) 17:22 was not the ordinary theatre, it was more concert hall - musical hall and the ice rink too. The main entrance was upstairs from the city side.😊
