  • Heading out on a sightseeing tour of old town Riga - the capital city of Latvia. Join me as I visit the key landmarks, historic events & hidden gems of one of the Baltics most fascinating cities.

Riga’s old town and historic quarter make up the most famous part of the city, and for good reason. They’re packed full of narrow cobbled streets, mediaeval dwellings, historic churches and gorgeous public spaces that offer Instagram opportunities galore. I joined a free walking tour to see as much of the old town of Riga as I could.
Inside the old town I stopped by the historic marketplace of Rathausplatz which was sadly destroyed during World War II but reconstructed shortly after. It’s a stylish place with some interesting buildings surrounding it including Riga City Hall, the House of the Black Heads and a monument recognising the first public Christmas Tree.
I’ll take you to some unusual sites including the street used for filming the Soviet version of Sherlock Holmes and some century old fortifications adjoining residential properties close to the park. We’ll also see some of the most popular tourist attractions including the Three Brothers, a row of mediaeval buildings now used by the Latvian Museum of Architecture, and the dominant Riga Cathedral (Rīgas Doms).
Right next to the hustle and bustle of the city is a beautiful park and garden called Bastejkalna Park where I found a canal system, the famous Laima Clock and the Freedom Monument (Brīvības piemineklis) - built to remember the Latvians who died fighting for freedom in 1918 and 1920. A little further on is the elaborate Latvian National Opera (Latvijas Nacionālā opera un balets).
As day turned to night I headed back into the central squares of the old town to soak in some of the atmosphere of Riga City. There were plenty of bands playing live music and all the restaurants and bars seemed full with people out enjoying themselves and celebrating the weekend.

Cool to see a train go over a narrow bridge like that. Really nice lutheran church. So basically, Jesus told the apostle Peter that he would deny him 3 times before the rooster crowed. And even though Peter said he never would once, he still did 3 times. So probably why they have the rooster up there. 3 brothers buildings really stand out amongst the rest of the buildings there. Could see how they said it was mother Russia. Great tour of Riga!

Thanks for the explanation regarding the rooster - makes sense. Got to see some really cool looking trains out there, sadly I didn’t get to film all of them. Some of them pass by so quickly! Glad you enjoyed it!

Great video like your videos usually are. I have been to Riga twice and I like the city a lot. My wife fell in love with that House of the Black Heads and its lovely big rooms. She was joking that she wants to have her 50th birthday party there :D
