Before we cut to the action I start off the vlog by showing you my £40 a night accommodation in Vilnius. The Conti Hotel is about 10 minutes from Town Hall Square (Rotušės aikštė) and very close to a mysterious egg. Enough said about that! After showing you my room I check out and head for the city centre.
I headed over the Bridge of Užupis and into Bernardine Garden (Sereikiškių parko Bernardinų sodas) - a lovely park area that backs onto a gentle river. On the other side of the water is a hill that’s home to the Three Crosses Monument - a place also known as the Hill of Three Crosses. Wooden crosses have sat at this location since the 17th century but they were torn down by the Soviet authorities in the 1950’s. In 1989 new crosses were erected to replace them.
Next up I passed Gediminas Castle Tower (Gedimino pilies bokštas) and talked about the history and recent renovations. The Arsenal building next door is also available for tours but on the day I visited it was closed. Onwards to Cathedral Square.
I’d already spent a considerable amount of time looking up at the Cathedral and its 57 metre tall bell tower so when I heard that it's possible to go inside and climb to the top I hurried up the steps and bought my ticket. The wooden steps and frame inside made for an interesting hour as I climbed up towards the bells in the upper compartment. Once down I visited Vilnius cathedral and its 200 year old interior.
My final adventure of the day was to make it over to Vilnius University Gardens where I found another smaller church and another magnificent bell tower, and guess what? Not only was I allowed inside, I was able to visit the top of this bell tower too. The only difference being that the bell tower at Vilnius University was fitted with a lift so I didn’t have to risk the rickety old wooden steps to the top.
The views from the top of the bell tower was a superb way to sign off from the vlog and end my trip to Lithuania. I headed back towards the train station and prepared to hit my next Baltic country.

That intro is a BANGER! Matt beware of that mini bar. They knew you were the man to ring the bells. What? Matt Whiting doesn't take lifts! Lithuania looks beautiful. We really want to go now!

Thanks, glad you like the intro - spent a bit of time on that one! It was a much larger mini-bar before I started 🥴. It's a great city, definitely recommended if you get the chance!

Lovely drone footage throughout Matt (especially the footage around the 4.00 mark!)- Vilnius looks super pretty, I've planned a trip there for March so I'll come back to your videos for inspiration nearer the time! What was your favourite thing that you did/saw in Vilnius? 😁

Thanks, glad you enjoyed the drone shots! Really hard to say which one was my favourite but top three were exploring the Republic of Užupis, enjoying the sunset from the Three Crosses and taking a look around the Palace of Culture and Sports on the north bank of the river. Hopefully that's given you a few ideas! I'm sure you'll have a terrific trip - happy wandering!

Originally this tower (as the other one of which only foundation remained) was 4 story high. For some reason in the beginning of 20th century only 3 story were rebuilt of the better preserved one. What looks like crenelation now are actually window holes.

That's interesting, thanks for the information. Always good to learn a bit more about the places I've visited.

Thank you Matt for this great video. I am coming to Vilnius, Riga, and Tallinn this summer for a remote working trip and these videos are SO helpful Great drone work also ! I love how you took it nice and slow so I could get a great feel for the layout of the city. Please document your train journey on the next video. Not much on CZcams when it comes to trains in the Baltic sisters.

Thanks, glad my videos are helping you to plan your trip - let me know if you have any questions. Sadly I didn't film any of the train journey but I will include some train footage when I'm in Latvia. Thanks again, I hope you have a fabulous trip to the Baltics!

Great video. I have been twice to Vilnius and like the city a lot. Some local said to me that it's not nice to live, but as a tourist I feel the opposite.
I have a request to you. Please add the recording date eg. to the beginning of the video. It would be very interesting to know.

Yeah definitely a cool city to explore as a tourist. In many respects it doesn't feel like a city which is nice. Thanks for the request, I'll consider it for future videos but sometimes it's a while between filming and editing so don't want to put people off watching. Thanks though!

Hi Matt. Did you say €40 per night? That’s a bargain. Looks like a nice hotel. I laugh re things like 15 min walk from cathedral. I, like you am not at all deterred by distances. I like nothing more than walking around a town or city and seeing where I end up. Cool being able to play (on) the bells. Thanks for another great edit. The drone footage takes your edits to another level (yeah I know…that sounds a bit naff, but you know what I mean). Cheers Zoltán

Hey Zoltán, glad you like the drone shots - always fun to fly the drone! Totally agree about walking, I'd much rather walk than catch a bus/taxi so if distances permit I always prefer to stroll there. Yeah €40 per night so a bit of a deal right there!
